Veteran Newsman Yong dedicates HAWANA 2025 Award To Journalism Fraternity

Barnama14-06-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) -- HAWANA 2025 Award recipient Datuk Yong Soo Heong has dedicated the recognition to all those involved in journalism.
Yong, who is also Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) president, said the award is a collective honour for all those who have guided and supported him throughout his career in the nation's media industry, rather than a recognition of his contribution alone.
The former editor-in-chief and general manager of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) also expressed hope that the national news agency would continue to uphold the highest standards and become a respected institution not only within Malaysia but globally.
'Bernama must be a respected news organisation, and its personnel must be more dynamic because ultimately, the staff are the backbone of the organisation.
'They need to work even harder to elevate Bernama's reputation. The production of credible and well-crafted stories is vital. We need to learn how to tell compelling stories to attract readers, viewers and listeners. That is what matters,' he said after receiving the award at the HAWANA 2025 highlight celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here today.
The veteran newsman received the award from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, witnessed by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Bernama Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai.

Rely on trusted news sources to avoid fake news, says Bernama chairman

Tun Musa (right) receiving a souvenir from Wong. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 12): The public, including in Sabah and Sarawak, is advised to refer to registered news agencies for accurate and verified information. Chairman of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, stated that agencies like Bernama and Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) are among the primary sources to ensure the public receives truthful news. 'This step is crucial to prevent the public from being influenced by inaccurate, slanderous, or politically motivated news circulating on social media. 'In an era of fake news and various allegations, it is the responsibility of government news agencies to deliver accurate news to the people while ensuring coverage and information conveyed are truthful,' he told the media after paying a courtesy visit to the Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, on Tuesday. The visit aimed to introduce himself as the Bernama chairman, effective since 1 September, to the Head of State of Sabah. Elaborating further, Wong said Bernama is committed to enhancing the quality of news coverage in Sabah, aligning with significant upcoming developments in the state, including the State Election (PRN) and various current issues. He stated that Sabah is an important state, and the national news agency will improve coverage through various initiatives to ensure every development is conveyed to the people swiftly and accurately. 'I have pledged to His Excellency to enhance coverage in Sabah and explore measures to ensure reporting quality continues to improve. 'As the government news agency, we will remain a trusted news source for the people, thereby strengthening confidence in the information delivered,' he said. Wong's visit, which was his first since Tun Musa took office as the 11th Governor of Sabah in January, was accompanied by Bernama Sabah Bureau chief Fadzli Ramli, journalist Noorazlina Jindeh, and photographer Zamain Singkui. Tun Musa, a former Chief Minister of Sabah, was sworn in as the State's Governor for a four-year term beginning Jan 1, 2025. He succeeded Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, who served four terms from Jan 1, 2011, until his tenure ended on Dec 31, 2024.

STR Phase 3 aids families with kitchen and school essentials

KUALA LUMPUR: The third phase of Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) disbursement, which commenced today, has brought relief to low-income families across Malaysia. In Kedah, vegetable seller Noor Syakilah Adzhar, 42, plans to use the funds for diapers and milk for her twin sons. 'My husband's income as a grass cutter is irregular, so this assistance is crucial for our family of six,' she said. Retiree Borhan Abd Rahim, 67, from Pendang, will allocate his STR aid for staple food items. 'I appreciate the government's care for seniors like me,' he added. In Melaka, cobbler Asyraf Ismail, 35, highlighted how the aid eases his end-of-month financial strain. 'It helps me stock up on food before the school holidays,' he explained. Perak food trader Mohd Rithauddeen Mohd Mustapha, 48, emphasised the programme's role in offsetting high living costs. 'The STR lets me buy extra household essentials,' he said. Kelantan housewife Norizan Hasan, 57, appreciated the flexibility of STR compared to SARA. 'Today, I bought basmati rice for special nasi lemak,' she shared. Sabah fisherman Mohidin Sugarin, 52, noted the aid's timeliness amid rising fuel and equipment costs. 'This RM650 helps repair my fishing net,' he said. Kota Belud trader Juriah Muntang, 45, relies on STR for her children's schooling needs. 'Road closures disrupt my business, so this aid is vital,' she added. Kota Marudu farmer Ligundao Akoi, 63, praised the extended application period. 'It ensures more villagers receive help,' he remarked. In Sarawak, cold storage worker Alvin Ayin, 37, called STR a lifeline. 'It covers kitchen and school expenses before payday,' he said.
