Gujarat: Over 56% voting in Kadi, Visavadar bypolls; counting of votes on June 23
The by-elections to the Assembly constituencies of Kadi in Mehsana district and Visavadar in Junagadh recorded approximately 57.90% and 56.89% polling, respectively, on Thursday, said a release from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer. The voting got completed in a 'peaceful atmosphere', the official release added.
Counting of votes will be done on June 23.
The release stated that the approximate voter turnout is as per data uploaded till 7 pm.
The state government had declared a holiday on Thursday for the two constituencies for voting. The polling started at 7 am and concluded at 6 pm.
The bypoll of Kadi assembly constituency was necessitated after it fell vacant following the death of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Karshan Solanki in February this year. The seat is reserved for the Scheduled Caste communities and a total of eight candidates were in the fray in the electoral battle.
The BJP has fielded Rajendra Chavda on the seat whereas the Congress has nominated a former MLA from the same seat, Ramesh Chavda, as its candidate for Kadi. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has nominated Jagdish Chavda for the seat.
At Visavadar constituency, the by-election was necessitated after sitting MLA from AAP, Bhupendra Bhayani, resigned from the seat in December 2023 and later joined the BJP. All eyes were on the BJP to see if it would field Bhayani on the seat or not. Eventually, the party nominated its former Junagadh district president and local cooperative leader, Kirit Patel, from the seat.
The BJP is facing a challenge from AAP's senior leader Gopal Italia and Congress's Nitin Ranpariya on the seat.
The AAP has apparently thrown its weight behind the candidate in the Visavadar constituency with its top national leadership, including former Chief Ministers Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi, and current Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, joining Italia as he filed his nomination papers.
In the past, Visavadar was represented by former CM Keshubhai Patel.
This time, the Praja Shakti Democratic Party (PSDP), launched by former CM Shankersinh Vaghela, has also nominated candidates for both the seats.
At present, the 182-member Gujarat Assembly has 161 MLAs of the BJP, followed by 12 of the Congress, and four of the AAP. While the Samajwadi Party (SP) has one legislator, two other MLAs are independents.

Congress Condemns Trump's Iran Airstrikes, Criticizes Modi Government's Silence
The Indian National Congress has strongly criticized US President Donald Trump's decision to launch airstrikes against Iran's nuclear installations, describing the military action as contradictory to his previous diplomatic overtures toward Tehran. The opposition party has simultaneously condemned the Modi government for its perceived inaction regarding American bombardments and Israeli military operations in the region. Congress General Secretary for Communications Jairam Ramesh expressed his party's disapproval through social media, emphasizing the urgent need for diplomatic engagement with Iran rather than military confrontation. He characterized Trump's use of American air power against Iranian nuclear sites as undermining the President's own public statements advocating for continued negotiations with the Islamic Republic. The senior Congress leader reinforced his party's position calling for immediate diplomatic intervention and meaningful dialogue with Iran to address escalating regional tensions. He argued that military strikes represent a fundamental departure from peaceful conflict resolution mechanisms that should guide international relations in the volatile Middle East landscape. As persources, Ramesh directed sharp criticism toward the Indian government's response to the unfolding crisis, describing the administration's silence as deeply troubling. He accused the Modi government of failing to condemn or even criticize American bombing campaigns and Israeli military aggression, suggesting that India's foreign policy stance lacks moral clarity during this critical period. The Congress spokesperson extended his critique to encompass the broader humanitarian crisis affecting the region, particularly highlighting what he termed India's "deafening silence" regarding the situation in Gaza. He characterized the ongoing conflict as constituting genocide against Palestinian populations, arguing that the Indian government has failed to take a principled stand on this humanitarian catastrophe. These statements emerged following American military strikes targeting three significant Iranian nuclear facilities located at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The attacks effectively drew the United States directly into the escalating confrontation between Israel and Iran, raising concerns about broader regional destabilization and potential for expanded conflict. Despite the opposition's criticism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in diplomatic outreach by conducting a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday. During this discussion, the Prime Minister expressed India's profound concern regarding mounting tensions between Iran and Israel, while advocating for immediate de-escalation of hostilities through peaceful means. Modi emphasized the importance of resolving the crisis through diplomatic channels and constructive dialogue rather than military escalation. In his subsequent social media communication, the Prime Minister detailed their comprehensive discussion of current regional developments and reiterated India's commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability throughout the Middle East. The Prime Minister's diplomatic engagement represents India's attempt to maintain balanced relationships with all parties while advocating for peaceful resolution of conflicts. However, the Congress party's criticism suggests ongoing political disagreement regarding the appropriate level of Indian involvement and public positioning on these complex international issues. This controversy reflects broader debates within Indian politics about the country's foreign policy approach toward Middle Eastern conflicts and the balance between strategic interests and moral positioning on international humanitarian concerns.

Samajwadi Party expels 3 MLAs over a year after ‘cross-voting' in Rajya Sabha polls
More than a year after several Samajwadi Party MLAs allegedly cross-voted in the Rajya Sabha elections, the party on Sunday expelled three of them — Abhay Singh (Gosaiganj, Ayodhya), Rakesh Pratap Singh (Gauriganj, Amethi), and Manoj Kumar Pandey (Unchahar, Rae Bareli), a former Chief Whip in the Assembly — for 'supporting a divisive and communal' ideology, which the party said was contrary to its 'harmonious socialist ideology'. The SP in a statement said the three had been given a 'grace period' in the hope that they would have a 'change of heart', which, it said, has ended. In Uttar Pradesh's Rajya Sabha polls held in February last year, seven SP MLAs voted in favour of BJP and NDA-backed candidates, and many of them had since been seen attending BJP events and meeting senior party leaders. On Sunday, while taking action against three, the SP warned the remaining four, stating that no action had been taken against them yet 'because of their good conduct'. 'Samajwadi Party, in the public interest, expels the… MLAs due to their communal, divisive, negative ideology and supporting anti-farmer, anti-women, anti-youth, anti-business, anti-working professionals as well as 'anti-PDA' ideology, as opposed to the politics of harmonious, positive, socialist ideology,' the party said in its statement. It further warned that there would be 'no place for 'jan virodhi' (anti-people) leaders' in the future, and that any 'activities against the basic ideology of the party' would be treated as 'unpardonable'. According to sources, last month, Abhay Singh, Rakesh Pratap Singh, and Vinod Chaturvedi had also met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi, along with BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Seth. Among those expelled, Manoj Kumar Pandey (57) is a three-time MLA from Unchahar and was once considered close to SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. He had also served as a cabinet minister during the previous SP government in the state. He was removed as Chief Whip in the Assembly after the Rajya Sabha cross-voting incident, and has since reportedly been supporting the BJP, including during the last Lok Sabha elections. Abhay Singh (50), a second-term MLA from Gosaiganj in Ayodhya, is known as a muscleman-turned-politician and is considered close to another strongman and former minister Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya, who now heads the Jansatta Dal (Loktantrik). Rakesh Pratap Singh (48) is a three-time MLA from Gauriganj in Amethi. He too had rebelled during the Rajya Sabha polls and has since publicly backed the BJP.

During an event on a Kannada television channel, Sudeep had also said: 'Only those in the film industry understand matters within Sandalwood. I respect DK Shivakumar. Cinema is a respectful and dignified he should be careful with what he says.' Sudeep was referring to Shivakumar's comments during the Bengaluru International Film Festival in March where he criticised the film fraternity for the low turnout of stars at the event. On the same stage, he also called out Sandalwood stars for not participating 'in good numbers' in Congress' Mekedatu padayatra in 2022. 'Consider this a request or a warning. If the govt does not cooperate, no film or shooting will happen. We know where to tighten the nuts and bolts and for whom,' Shivakumar had said at the festival.
