Cubbon Band Stand brings Bengaluru's Sundays to life

Time of India22-05-2025
At the heart of Cubbon Park, the century-old Band Stand is no longer a relic of the past. Every Sunday morning, from 8 am, it comes alive with music and dance, marking a revival of Bengaluru's cultural heritage.
Heritage Beku, in collaboration with the Department of Horticulture, is making the bandstand the centre of public life again. The Revival Series is an initiative to preserve and celebrate Bengaluru's history and culture through live performances. From Carnatic music to Bharatnatyam dance to festive choirs, the bandstand hosts a diverse range of artistes every Sunday.
'WE ARE BRINGING ART BACK TO THIS FORGOTTEN CORNER OF THE PARK'
'Cubbon Park has always held a special place in the hearts of Bengalureans.
The revival effort took root slowly, seeded by nostalgia and a deep desire to bring music and life back to this forgotten corner of the park,' says Priya Chetty Rajagopal, founder of Heritage Beku. 'The series is not only about events but also about creating a cultural vibe in the heart of the city,' she adds.
'IT'S IMPORTANT THAT PEOPLE RECONNECT'
'Reconnecting with a historical space through cultural experiences is not just nostalgic, it's necessary.
Cities across the world have long treated their parks as sites for cultural congregation. Bengaluru, with its rich heritage and creative community, deserves the same. Artistes are eager to participate, the public is engaged, and the park provides the perfect stage,' says Priya.
The real magic of this revival is not just the return of music and movement to the Band Stand, but the way it reconnects the soul of the city to its most cherished memories, which makes Cubbon Park more alive
Priya Chetty Rajagopal, founder, Heritage Beku
'A LOST FEELING IS NOW BEING REVIVED AT CUBBON PARK'
The events focus on Indian classical and traditional art forms. But curating the events comes with its pros and cons; however, at the Revival Series, artists come purely for the nostalgia.
Priya explains, 'Finding artistes was a challenge, especially ones willing to perform pro bono. Yet, many responded with enthusiasm. For them, the band stand wasn't just a stage. It was a symbol of memory, belonging, and pride.'
'GLAD TO BRING BACK THIS TRADITION'
'There is a different magic when people perform at Cubbon Park. Every single artist tells us it was a privilege and an honour to perform here. Their creative souls are at a top level just being in that space.
We're proud to be part of something like this, and we are glad to bring back such an important tradition to Bengaluru,' says Priya.
'IT IS MORE THAN JUST PERFORMANCES'
'Art in public spaces makes culture accessible. It breaks down barriers and reminds us that art doesn't belong in closed auditoriums alone. There's something inherently non-transactional about it. It's a gift to the city,' said Ruam M, a member of the group.
Just being in that space, watching an artiste perform, under the open sky, surrounded by nature, is unexpectedly moving

Anushka Sharma once admitted she found Ranveer Singh 'attractive' but denied romance rumors: 'We can kill each other…I'm serious'

Anushka Sharma confessed to finding Ranveer Singh attractive during their early Bollywood collaborations but acknowledged their contrasting personalities prevented a romantic relationship. She humorously noted their intense dynamic, suggesting they were too different to make a relationship work. Sharma later found lasting love with cricketer Virat Kohli, marrying him in 2017 and starting a family. Anushka Sharma once recently opened up about her early days in Bollywood, revealing that she found Ranveer Singh 'attractive' during their on-screen collaborations but never pursued a romance. Different personalities kept them apart In an interview with Simi Garewal , Anushka revealed that she once wondered why she wasn't dating Ranveer Singh. She explained that their personalities were very different, which made their relationship volatile. While she admitted finding him attractive, she emphasized that they remained just friends. A playful yet intense dynamic The actress revealed that their dynamic was intense, joking that they could 'kill each other' if they tried to be in a relationship. She explained that they wanted very different things from life—Ranveer being highly practical, while she described herself as completely impractical. Despite this, she admitted that she liked him and found him attractive. Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh first starred together in the 2010 romantic comedy Band Baaja Baaraat, which brought them widespread recognition despite a modest box office performance. They teamed up again in 2011 for Ladies vs Ricky Bahl. Finding love with Virat Kohli She also shared that dating a fellow actor was challenging for her. While she never dated any other Bollywood co-stars, she eventually found love with former Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli. Anushka met Virat during a brand shoot, and the two quickly connected. They tied the knot in a private ceremony at Lake Como, Italy, in December 2017. The couple welcomed their first daughter, Vamika, in 2021, followed by a son, Akaay, in 2024. On the professional front, Anushka Sharma was last seen in Zero alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif. She will next star in the biopic of former Indian cricketer Jhulan Goswami, titled Chakda Xpress. "Get the latest updates on Times of India, including reviews of the movie Coolie and War 2 ."

Mahavatar Narsimha 4th Wednesday Hindi Box Office: Hombale's animated movie continues outpacing Coolie The Powerhouse

Mahavatar Narsimha, directed by Ashwin Kumar, continued wrecking the box office with the least drop of all Indian movies after 'Discount Tuesday'. The devotional animated movie added Rs 1.20 crore at the Hindi box office, taking its total closer to Rs 150 crore. The movie will cross the Rs 150 crore net Hindi mark on its 5th Friday, that is on the same day that War 2 also crosses Rs 150 crore at the Hindi box office. From here, it will be interesting to see if Mahavatar Narsimha can actually end up doing higher collections than War 2 in Hindi. The Day Wise Hindi Net India Collections Of Mahavatar Narsimha Are As Under Weeks/Days India Net Collections (Hindi) Week 1 Rs 29 crore Week 2 Rs 50 crore Week 3 Rs 48.50 crore 4th Friday Rs 5.50 crore 4th Saturday Rs 4.95 crore 4th Sunday Rs 5.95 crore 4th Monday Rs 1.50 crore 4th Tuesday Rs 1.75 crore 4th Wednesday Rs 1.20 crore Total Rs 148.35 crore in 27 days Weeks/Days Note: The collections exclude 3D handling charges Mahavatar Narsimha Heads For A Rs 300 Crore Plus Gross Worldwide Finish Mahavatar Narsimha has already crossed Rs 250 crore at the worldwide box office (all languages) and it will be target to end its run over Rs 300 crore. Seeing the trend, it should not be too hard. However, one can never absolutely be sure. Regardless, the job is done well and the upcoming movies from the Mahavatar Cinematic Universe are already among the most awaited movies in the coming years. Mahavatar Narsimha Has Shown That You Don't Need Big Actors For Your Film To Run The biggest takeaway is that these are all animated movies and don't have a star in them. The audience for the movie is purely coming on the basis of the film's content. There used to be a stigma around animated movies. But guess it is no longer there. Producers should take note and invest in making compelling animated movies. The box office will follow, and so will the audience love. Mahavatar Narsimha is going to end as one of the most profitable Indian movies of the year. The only movies with a greater profit so far are Chhaava and Saiyaara. The movie plays in theatres now. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.
