1,055 users fined Rs 3 crore for misusing domestic power connection in Dindigul
DINDIGUL: A sum of Rs 3.49 crore has been collected as fine from 1,055 consumers in Dindigul in the past two years for diverting domestic power connections to commercial purposes (February 2022- March 2025), Tangedco stated in a reply to TNIE's RTI query filed last month.
A top official from TANGEDCO (Dindigul) said,"The misuse of power connections is defined as Misuse of power tariff. This is an offence and causes huge financial loss to TANGEDCO.
Most of these connections are detected by assessors during bimonthly visits and field officers during their inspections. After high consumption within a short duration triggered suspicion, a vigilance team held inspection and found misuse of power connections for commercial purposes. The charges have been recovered from consumers as fine."
CITU-TANGEDCO Employees union (Dindigul) honorary president M Umapathy said,"Misuse of tariff is rampant in Sirumalai, Athoor, and Batlagundu, where houses have been converted into homestays and hotels.
In Dindigul city, many were used for cooking activities under Food Business Operators (FBO). In Kodaikanal, most houses have been converted into resorts and hotels.
After inspections, these fines were levied. Besides, load consumption can be easily detected in digital meters. The fines are levied based on the six-month power consumption and other factors."

Six interstate drug peddlers held in H'bag
1 2 Hazaribag: A total of six drug peddlers were arrested with 15 kg opium valued at Rs 1.5 crore. Contraband, including 28.57 kg raw materials, three motorcycles, six mobile phones, and Rs 66,000 were seized, SP Anjani Anjan said on Thursday. SP Anjani said, "A team led by Hazaribag (headquarters) SDPO Amit Kumar Anand conducted searches at Lohsinghna, Korrah, and Sadar police station areas. Four smugglers were held from Lohsinghna. They were identified as Pintu Kumar Dangi (25) and Mukul Dangi (28), both residents of Bariatu village under Chatra (Sadar), besides Avinash Kumar (19) and Rahul Pandey (21), both residing in Giddor of Chatra district. Mukul had a criminal record at Ghaziabad police station under the NDPS Act. Avinash and Rahul had six criminal cases against them." "In Korrah, 2.5 kg opium, materials for making opium doda weighing 21.7gm, and Rs 66,000 in cash were confiscated. The arrested were identified as Rahul Yadav (23) and Mohammed Arshad Ansari of Thotwa village under Katkamsandi police station limits. Rahul Yadav belonged to Kendua in Chatra," he added. The SP further said, "From Lohsinghna, 10.8 kg opium and doda valued at 6.67 lakh were seized." Preliminary probe found that the consignment was being transported from Chatra to across the country, police said.

The Northern Railway on Thursday announced the commencement of regular services of the Vande Bharat Express trains between Srinagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra starting June 7. The services will operate six days a week, enhancing connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the prominent pilgrimage destination. Two pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains, Train Nos. 26404/26403 and 26401/26402 were introduced on the Srinagar-Katra-Srinagar route, with an intermediate halt at Banihal.
