Retina Summit gets underway in city
According to a press release, the scientific conference, which runs on the theme of 'Posterior Segment Trauma', has brought together a panel of international and national faculty to discuss the latest advancements, challenges, and innovations in managing ocular trauma, which is a leading cause of visual disability worldwide.
A team of consultants from Shri Bhagwan Mahavir Vitreoretinal Services, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai has organised the summit. Gangadhara Sundar, president of APOTS and Rajiv Raman, scientific chair, APOTS emphasised the importance of evidence-based approaches and inter-speciality collaboration to tackle the global burden of ophthalmic trauma. The summit also features pre-conference workshops and interactive case-based crosstalks, the release said.

Sankara Nethralaya pays tribute to Dr. Namperumalsamy
At the 31st Annual Meeting of ARVO-INDIA, a forum where eye researchers from across the country gather to present research and share expertise held at Sankara Nethralaya in Chennai, a swatch of time was taken to recall memories of, and honour the legacy of a visionary in the field of ophthalmology, P. Namperumalsamy. 'Dr. Nam', as he was fondly known, was chairman-emeritus of Madurai-based Aravind Eye Hospital. He died on Thursday (July 25, 2025) at the age of 85. Recalling memories, T. Surendran, chairman, Sankara Nethralaya, spoke of his first meetings with Dr. Nam at workshops at Aravind Eye Hospital and of his simple, unassuming personality. 'His association with Sankara Nethralaya dates back to its inception,' he said and added that they hoped to ensure his legacy endured. Gullapalli N. Rao, founder, L.V. Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, said that he had known Dr. Nam for nearly 60 years, and his wife G. Nachiar, for even longer. Recalling him as a simple, humble, and informal person, Dr. Rao said that he had learnt a lot from Dr. Nam's experiences. 'His contribution [to Aravind Eye Hospital] was the creation of strong sub-specialities and training programmes. He also created the research centre,' Dr. Rao said, adding that Dr. Nam had fought with the management to keep research funded and had constantly advocated for research. The two doctors then signed a condolence card, and all delegates at the conference who wished to sign it were asked to do so, with the card to be sent to Aravind Eye Hospital subsequently, organisers of the event said.

Free medical camp concludes in Nellore, 883 patients tested
As many as 883 patients underwent the required tests at the nine-day-long eye camp conducted at Vinjamur town of SPSR Nellore district by experts from Chennai-based Sankara Nethralaya. The camp was inaugurated by Udayagiri MLA Kakarla Suresh at YR Junior College on June 6 and concluded on Sunday (June 15). It was sponsored by Segu Sateesh, an NRI hailing from this region, and his family members Segu Subba Rao and Nirmala. Dr. Gajanand Kumar Varma, senior ophthalmologist from Sankara Nethralaya, said that a total of 887 people from the predominantly rural Vinjamur area had undergone eye test and 188 were selected for free eye surgeries in the modern mobile operation theatres brought all the way to the little town. Similarly, 45 patients were recommended to undergo eye surgeries at Chennai. Sankara Nethralaya's Public Relations Officer Ranjith Kumar acknowledged the munificence of the Segu family and appreciated BJP district former vice president Yellala Raghu Rami Reddy and Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Saikshik Mahasangh (ABRSM) State president Prof. Y.V. Rami Reddy for making arrangements for the eye camp.
