Supreme Court directs Karnataka to respond on theatre protection for release of Kamal Haasan's ‘Thug Life'
In a plea seeking protection of theatres in Karnataka from threats over the release of Kamal Haasan movie 'Thug Life', the Supreme Court today directed the Karnataka government to file their response by tomorrow. The top-court stated that it had issued notice to the respondent State seeking its response, in the last hearing, considering the urgency of the matter.
A bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan also stated that the rule of law demands that every film which has been approved by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) must be allowed to be released and mobs and vigilantes shall not be allowed to take to the streets and create ruckus over the issue.
The top court also ordered that the case pending before the Karnataka High Court on this issue be transferred to itself.

Responding to a media query in Koppal on Tuesday, the minister said that when it comes to the self-respect of Kannada, I think the Kannada theatre owners will not allow their films. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday appealed for calm and urged pro-Kannada organisations and activists to respect the Supreme Court's directions amid the ban on the release of Kamal Haasan's Tamil film Thug Life in the remarks come after the Supreme Court transferred to itself a plea filed by the producer of Thug Life, and warned that mob threats cannot dictate what gets released in connection with the Kamal Haasan issue, we must follow the directives of the court with due respect,' Shivakumar said, responding to the Supreme Court's sharp remarks against threats to block the film's release. 'Everyone has their limitations, and I request all organisations and activists to acknowledge and stay within those limits.' The Deputy Chief Minister stressed that while people were free to express their views, it must be done within legal and democratic boundaries.'No one should take the law into their own hands. Karnataka is known for being a peace-loving state,' he Bengaluru's inclusive identity, Shivakumar said the city had welcomed all languages and cultures.'It is an international city, and everyone needs Bengaluru.
