BMRCL to upgrade depots to support expanding Metro network in Bengaluru

The Hindu13-07-2025
In preparation for Bengaluru's expanding Namma Metro network, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is upgrading its existing train depots to accommodate additional rakes, especially for the Purple and Green Lines, which are set to receive 21 new trains in the coming months.
Currently, the Metro train operations are supported by depots located at Peenya (for the Green Line), Kadugodi-Whitefield (for the Purple Line), and Baiyappanahalli. A new depot has also been constructed at Hebbagodi to serve the upcoming Yellow Line between R.V. Road and Bommasandra.
Series of enhancements
According to BMRCL officials, the Peenya depot is undergoing a series of upgrades to support the additional train sets. These enhancements include the construction of extra platforms, a jack pit for three-car coaches, and other essential infrastructure. 'The total cost for these works is estimated at ₹1.94 crore. These improvements are vital for the efficient stabling and maintenance of trains, thereby ensuring smooth operations across the metro network,' an official said.
Baiyappanahalli depot redesigned
Meanwhile, major redevelopment work has already been completed at the Baiyappanahalli depot, at a cost of ₹249.19 crore. This upgraded facility will be the first in the BMRCL system to feature a two-level structure. The redesigned depot is strategically positioned to support 16 trains operating on the Outer Ring Road stretch (Phase 2A) and 21 trains on the Airport Line (Phase 2B), which run in opposite directions. Baiyappanahalli sits in the middle of both corridors and is expected to play a key role in managing operations until the new Shettigere depot near the airport becomes operational.
'Presently, the Baiyappanahalli depot services the 43.49-kilometre-long Purple Line connecting Challaghatta to Whitefield. However, once the remodeling is complete, the responsibility for Purple Line maintenance will be divided between the Kadugodi and Challaghatta depots, as the upgraded Baiyappanahalli depot begins handling Airport Line operations,' the official added.
Five new depots
In addition to these developments, five new depots are under construction to support the expanding metro network. These include Shettigere (Airport Line), Kothanur (Pink Line from Nagawara to Kalena Agrahara), Anjanapura (Green Line extension), Challaghatta (Purple Line extension), and Hebbagodi (Yellow Line).

(BMRCL via PTI - file photo) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the long-awaited Yellow Line of Bengaluru Metro on August 10, a move seen as a key milestone in the city's transport infrastructure. Along with the inauguration, the Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for Phase 3 of the metro network, a major expansion planned under his third term. The announcements were made by Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya and Union Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday. What you need to know about the Yellow Line The Yellow Line stretches over 19.15 kilometres from RV Road to Bommasandra, covering 16 stations. It links key hubs such as Silk Board Junction, BTM Layout, Electronic City, and Bommasandra Industrial Area. The total project cost is estimated at Rs 5,056.99 crore, reported PTI. The line is expected to serve close to eight lakh riders per day. It is being seen as a game-changer for Bengaluru South, where rapid growth in residential and commercial activity has outpaced public transport infrastructure. The Silk Board Junction, notorious for traffic snarls, is likely to see considerable relief. The 19.15-km corridor connecting RV Road to Bommasandra will significantly boost connectivity across southern Bengaluru, easing long-standing traffic bottlenecks and serving nearly eight lakh commuters daily. Tejasvi Surya noted that the Prime Minister's personal insistence ensured the line would meet its targeted August 15 launch, with the formal opening now scheduled for August 10. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like You Had One Job: 25 Hilarious Fails Where Workers Did the Absolute Minimum Watch More Undo Metro phase 3 launch to follow The Yellow Line inauguration will be accompanied by the foundation stone-laying for Phase 3 of Namma Metro, a 44.65-km expansion project estimated to cost Rs 15,611 crore. According to the government, this expansion was approved within the first 100 days of the Modi government's third term. The new phase will bring metro connectivity to more neighbourhoods across the city, strengthening last-mile urban mobility. Together with the Yellow Line, Phase 3 is expected to benefit around 25 lakh people in Bengaluru South alone. Broader impact Officials and local leaders have said the metro expansion aligns with the broader vision of reducing Bengaluru's traffic congestion and offering reliable, mass-based alternatives to private transport. PM Narendra Modi to inaugurate Namma Metro Yellow Line and lay foundation for Phase 3 on August 10

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Yellow Line of Namma Metro on August 10 and lay the foundation stone for Metro Phase 3, also known as the Orange Line. Manohar Lal Khattar, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, and Tejasvi Surya, Bangalore South MP, made the announcement on their X accounts on Sunday. They also said that the Prime Minister would also lay the foundation stone for 44.65 km of Metro Phase 3 at a cost of ₹15,611 crore on August 10. The Yellow and THE Orange Lines together will benefit nearly 25 lakh people in Bengaluru South, Mr. Surya posted on Sunday. The 19.15-km Yellow Line, built at a cost of ₹5,056.99 crore, connects R.V. Road and Bommasandra in South Bengaluru and includes 16 stations, such as BTM Layout, Silk Board, Electronics City, and Hebbagodi. Once operational, the line is expected to ease traffic congestion in several major bottlenecks and heavily congested corridors like Hosur Road, Silk Board Junction, and Electronics City Junction. Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) began civil works for the Yellow Line in 2017, three years after receiving approval from the Central government. Although the original deadline was set for early 2023, civil works were only completed in 2024. The delay was primarily owing to the late arrival of train sets. Initially, the plan was to open seven stations on the Yellow line, with trains running every 15 minutes. However, BMRCL is now planning to make all 16 stations operational from the start, using three driverless trains running at 25-minute intervals. Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL), the company supplying trains for the Yellow Line to BMRCL, has already delivered three train sets ready to be deployed. A fourth train set has been dispatched and is expected to arrive soon. The inauguration announcement came two days after BMRCL received safety clearance for the Yellow Line from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS). Once the fourth train set arrives, it will undergo safety and operational checks before being inducted into service. It may take about a month for the fourth train to begin operations. At full capacity, the Yellow Line will operate 15 trains, significantly reducing waiting times, although this level of service is expected only by next year. Long delay to open Yellow Line In 2019, BMRCL awarded the train supply contract to a Chinese company. However, the Indian government later banned Chinese firms from participating in Indian government tenders and contracts fololwing the Galwan stand off in 2020. Eventually, the Chinese firm partnered with TRSL to begin delivering train sets. The first prototype train was sent in early 2024, with testing beginning in November. TRSL is expected to complete delivery of all Yellow Line train sets by next year.

PM to open Metro line to IT corridor on Aug 10

Bengaluru: Missing the original deadline by two-and-a-half years, Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line — from RV Road in Jayanagar to tech hub on Hosur Road, offering a congestion-free commute for lakhs of tech workers — will be inaugurated by PM Modi on Aug 10. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Commercial operations are likely from Aug 11. Union minister of housing and urban affairs Manohar Lal Khattar announced the launch date on X. On the same day, Modi will lay the foundation for Phase III of Namma Metro project, which proposes 45km lines at a cost of Rs 15,611 crore, the post added. Though infrastructure was ready for over two years for the 19km yellow line built by BMRCL at a cost of Rs 7,000 crore, the inauguration of this stretch, having missed revised deadlines multiple times, was further delayed due to shortage of coaches. BMRCL recently set Aug 15 as the revised target to open the line with just three trainsets. After receiving safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety to open the new line connecting Electronics City, BMRCL approached the state govt. In 2023, ahead of the Karnataka assembly elections, Modi inaugurated the extended Purple Line from KR Pura to Whitefield. Later, three Namma Metro projects — two Purple Line stretches, the Green Line extension towards Tumakuru, and the Ragigudda–Silk Board double-decker flyover—were opened without fanfare. Although the Centre sanctioned Orange Line in 2024, the state govt's plan for a double-decker flyover delayed tendering. BMRCL is expected to float tenders by year-end. The agency is finalising the design plan, while environmental and social impact consultations are in progress, with reports likely to be published between Oct and Nov.
