India, New Zealand conclude 2nd round of Free Trade Agreement negotiations
The third round of negotiations is scheduled to be held in New Zealand in September. The intersessional virtual meetings will maintain the forward trajectory set in the second round, according to a Commerce Ministry statement.
Continuing the momentum generated during the first round held in May in New Delhi, the second round of negotiations was held from July 14-25.
This round accomplished significant advancement in multiple areas, including Trade in Goods and Services, Investment, Rules of Origin, Customs Procedures and Trade Facilitation, Technical Barriers to Trade, Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, and Economic Cooperation.
Discussions were marked by mutual interest in achieving early convergence on several texts. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to concluding a balanced, comprehensive, and forward-looking agreement.
The development catalyses the shared commitment to deepen economic ties and guidance given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the visit of New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon in March this year.
India's bilateral merchandise trade with New Zealand reached $1.3 billion in FY2024-25, recording a growth of 48.6 per cent over the previous financial year, signaling the growing potential of the economic partnership.
The FTA is expected to enhance trade flows, support investment linkages, promote supply chain resilience, and establish a predictable and enabling environment for businesses in both countries.
The FTA was launched during the meeting between Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and New Zealand's Minister for Trade and Investment Todd McClay on March 16.

Trade unions, farmers to protest against Trump tariffs on August 13
Central trade unions and farmers have called for a nationwide protest on August 13 to oppose US President Donald Trump's tariff threats and the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). CTUs-SKM protest will include various mass actions like tractor and motorcycle rallies, protest demonstrations, public gatherings, and other forms of protest.(PTI/Representative Image) The CTUs-SKM, a group of ten central trade unions and the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, strongly condemned the recent threats by Trump to impose 25 per cent tariffs on India, and an additional penalty for the nation's oil purchase from Russia. It said in a statement, "CTUs-SKM calls upon all farmers, workers, students, and patriotic citizens to join the nationwide day of resistance on August 13, 2025, with various mass actions like tractor and motorcycle rallies, protest demonstrations, public gatherings, and other forms of protest as decided by different platforms and partner organizations." The CTUs-SKM demanded that India dismiss Trump's threats and assert the nation's sovereign right to trade with any nation, including Russia. They also said that the India-UK CETA must be reassessed and altered immediately, news agency PTI reported. They said that all negotiations for a trade deal between India and the US must be paused immediately to prevent any further corporate exploitation. No more secret trade agreements, they said, stressing that public consultation and parliamentary scrutiny are a must for all future deals. They drew parallels from the East India Company's colonisation of India through trade and said that similarly, CETA and the US trade deals are the new instruments of corporate imperialism. The statement said that farmers and workers will rise on August 13 to defend India's sovereignty and freedom, sending a clear message. They added that the US deal and CETA are a blatant act of economic coercion aimed at dictating India, including its trade with Russia. According to CTUs-SKM, such threats expose the hypocrisy of the US trade policies, which demand open markets for American corporations and weaponise tariffs to bully other nations. It added that the Indian government's 'meek submission' to these threats is equally alarming, reflecting the nation's growing compliance with Western imperialist interests. "This surrender is further evident in the recently signed India-UK Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA), a deal that sacrifices the interests of India's farmers, workers, and economic independence at the altar of foreign corporate profits," it stated. The trade unions and SKM also expressed discontent over the Centre's 'silence' against this intimidation, which they said shows New Delhi's willingness to compromise on its strategic autonomy for the US. The statement added, as cited by PTI, "This capitulation paves the way for an even more exploitative India-US trade deal, which would grant American agri-business corporations like Cargill unrestricted access to India's dairy sector, agriculture, resulting in collapsing prices & destroying the farming community along with endangering food security of the nation." The group pointed out that the India-US trade deal and India-UK CETA could trigger de-industrialisation in the country and promote unemployment. The India-UK CETA, it said, is also a direct attack on the nation's food security, healthcare, and economic self-reliance.

Gandhi called up Thackeray Sunday and invited him to attend the meeting of the INDIA bloc leaders, Sena (UBT) mouthpiece Saamana reported Monday. 'Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray will be in New Delhi on August, 6,7 and 8 at a time when the Monsoon Session of Parliament is underway. On August 7, Thackeray will attend the INDIA bloc meeting. He will also inaugurate the new party office in Sansad Bhavan,' the paper said. 'Besides the online meeting of INDIA bloc leaders before the Monsoon Session of Parliament, no other meeting of INDA bloc has been held. Therefore, Thursday's meeting will be important. The meeting, among others, will discuss the future strategy and the problems with the voters list,' the paper said. Meanwhile, Saamana, in its editorial Monday, alleged that last week's violence in Yevat area was abetted by people in the government. 'The police had taken action against those who had kept objectionable status. However, two MLAs went there and disturbed the peace. Instead of ensuring peace, they tried to fan the violence,' the paper said. The Pune rural police lodged five cases and detained 17 people in connection with the communal tension and violence reported at Yavat village in Daund taluka on August 1. The police also issued a prohibitory order as per provisions of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court granted an interim stay on defamation proceedings against Rahul Gandhi over his comments during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in 2022, where he stated that Indian Army was 'thrashed' by the Chinese Army at the border in Arunachal Pradesh on December 16, 2022. Reacting to Rahul Gandhi's comments, Kangana Ranaut said the Congress leader 'speaks in support of enemy nations. He has anti-India mindset. So, this is a welcome move by the Supreme Court that they pulled him up. In the tine to come, others should be mindful that they do not hurt the honour, integrity and morale of India.' In December 2022 during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul Gandhi had alleged that the Chinese Army had 'captured 2,000 sq km of Indian territory,' 'killed 20 Indian soldiers,' and 'thrashed our (Indian) jawans in Arunachal Pradesh.' Following the Congress leader's comments, a complaint was filed in a local court by former Border Roads Organisation (BRO) director Uday Shankar Srivastava. On Monday, the Supreme Court stayed the defamation proceedings against the Congress leader, and also made certain observations during the hearing. On May 29, the Allahabad High Court had refused to quash the defamation complaint and summoning order, which Gandhi claimed were driven by malice and filed with dishonest intent. While staying the proceedings, the Supreme Court made observations about Gandhi's remarks, saying, 'If you were a true Indian, you would not say all this.' 'How do you get to know that 2,000 square kilometres of Indian territory were occupied by the Chinese? Were you there? Do you have any credible material? Why do you make these statements without you were a true Indian, you would not say all this,' Justice Datta also said during the hearing.
