Naoya Inoue books return to Las Vegas and Tokyo for 2025 undisputed title defenses

Yahoo06-03-2025
Naoya Inoue has back-to-back fight dates.
The Japanese megastar has agreed on deals to defend his undisputed super bantamweight title in May and September against Ramon Cardenas and Murodjon Akhmadaliev, respectively.
Uncrowned's Keith Idec was first with the news.
Promoters have agreed for Naoya Inoue to fight Murodjon Akhmadaliev on 9/14 in Tokyo if Inoue beats Ramon Cardenas on 5/4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. WBA could have stripped Inoue if they didn't strike a deal on step-aside $ and Akhmadaliev's purse. Story soon @ringmagazine.

Inoue vs. Cardenas will headline a show promoted by Bob Arum's Top Rank on ESPN on Sunday, May 4, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The show concludes a bumper week of boxing that also includes a triple-header of fights from Times Square featuring Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, and Teofimo Lopez on May 2, and Canelo Alvarez's undisputed super middleweight title bout with William Scull in Riyadh on May 3.
Should Inoue (29-0, 26 KOs), Uncrowned's No. 3 pound-for-pound boxer in the world, beat Cardenas in May, he will then defend his undisputed championship against Akhmadaliev on an Ohashi Promotions bill on Sept. 14 in Tokyo.
Cardenas (26-1, 14 KOs) is ranked No. 2 with the WBA. He has won fourteen fights in a row since his lone career defeat to Danny Flores in 2017. The San Antonio native, like Inoue, has already fought once in 2025, winning a unanimous decision over the previously undefeated Bryan Acosta.
Akhmadaliev (13-1, 10 KOs) is the WBA's interim champion and designated mandatory challenger. The Uzbek boxer previously held the unified title in the weight class until he was upset by Marlon Tapales in 2023. Akhmadaliev worked his way back up to the mandatory position and claimed the interim strap in December, knocking out Ricardo Espinoza in the third round.
Inoue, a two-division undisputed champion, successfully defended his belts in January against late-replacement opponent Ye Joon Kim. He hopes to fight four times in 2025, and should he beat Cardenas and Akhmadaliev in May and September, he could cap off the year in Riyadh in December potentially against Junto Nakatani or Nick Ball.

Connecticut Sun looking at multiple options to complete proposed $325M sale: Report

The owners of the Connecticut Sun, who had tentatively reached an agreement to sell the WNBA franchise, are now assessing their options to salvage the deal, according to an ESPN report, after the WNBA balked at a planned move of the franchise to Boston. The Mohegan tribe, which bought the former Orlando Miracle and moved it to Connecticut in 2003, struck a deal earlier this month in which Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca agreed to buy the club for a WNBA-record $325 million. Pagliuca hoped to move the Sun's home games from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, to Boston's TD Garden, where the Celtics also play. However, the league quickly stepped in and issued a statement emphasizing that "relocation decisions are made by the WNBA Board of Governors and not by individual teams," and pointing out that other cities bid for WNBA expansion franchises at the beginning that would take priority over putting a team in Boston. Sources tell ESPN the tribe intends to present multiple options to the league to facilitate the sale. Those options reportedly include a full sale to Pagliuca's group, a sale to a group fronted by former Milwaukee Bucks owner Marc Lasry, selling only a minority stake in the franchise or allowing the WNBA to purchase the club for that same $325 million price tag. Sources also tell ESPN that the WNBA has offered to buy the Sun for $250 million so it could then steer the franchise toward an ownership group in one of its preferred expansion cities. In the last three rounds of bidding for WNBA expansion franchises -- which resulted in new teams in Cleveland (in 2028), Detroit (2029) and Philadelphia (2030) joining the league -- Boston never submitted a proposal.

ESPN Receives Strong 'Warning' About Monica McNutt

ESPN Receives Strong 'Warning' About Monica McNutt originally appeared on The Spun. ESPN analyst Monica McNutt may have lost her hosting privileges after making an embarrassing mistake on "First Take." At the very least, there might be friction behind the scenes. McNutt joined ESPN in 2019 as an ACC Network analyst. Two years later, she started making regular appearances on "SportsCenter" and "NBA Today." She also became a key figure for the network's coverage of the WNBA and women's college basketball. When she's not part of ESPN's national coverage, she's calling games on the radio for the New York Knicks. Prior to becoming an analyst for ESPN, McNutt made appearances on Fox Sports 1, CBS Sports Network and Turner/NBA TV. She was even included in NBC's coverage of the 2021 Summer Olympics. So what went wrong for McNutt? On last Friday's episode of "First Take," she didn't realize special guest Druski was wearing a Barry Sanders jersey. She assumed his jersey was affiliated with Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders. "It's a blast to have you here, thank you so much for joining us. The jersey, obviously, ties to Shedeur Sanders," McNutt told Druski. The popular comedian quickly replied, "No, no, no, no, no. This is, uh, Barry Sanders." McNutt could lose the locker room at ESPN. According to OutKick, "countless ESPN staffers" were embarrassed by McNutt's mistake. "Since Saturday, OutKick has heard from countless ESPN staffers about the segment. Many prefaced their reactions with, "I like Monica, but …" Still, they were embarrassed—for her, for the producers, for management, and for the ESPN brand," Bobby Burack wrote. "Barry Sanders is one of the greatest players in NFL history. McNutt didn't know who he is. That's not a blunder. That's a lack of knowledge, history, and preparation. It's inexcusable." Some fans called out ESPN over the weekend, declaring that McNutt should be fired. ESPN has McNutt under contract for a few more years. Back in October 2024, ESPN agreed to a new contract with McNutt. As part of that agreement, she has received an expanded role for the network's NBA and WNBA coverage. If ESPN wants to avoid causing any controversy this fall, McNutt should stick to covering basketball. Besides, the network has plenty of other analysts to cover the NFL, including Ryan Clark, Dan Orlovsky and Marcus Spears. We'll see if ESPN adjusts McNutt's role on "First Take" or allows last week's Barry Sanders blunder to fly. ESPN Receives Strong 'Warning' About Monica McNutt first appeared on The Spun on Aug 19, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 19, 2025, where it first appeared.
