State awards Sharon Regional $2 million for improvements
SHARON, Pa. (WKBN) — A $2 million infrastructure improvement grant has been awarded to Sharon Regional Medical Center.
Sen. Michele Brooks (R-50) made the announcement on Friday. The grant is being awarded through the Commonwealth's Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP).
'This funding for Sharon Regional demonstrates the commitment at the state level to ensure additional quality healthcare remains sustainable and available to the residents of Sharon and surrounding region,' Brooks said in a news release. 'The successful reopening of Sharon Regional Medical Center has been a critical victory for increased capacity, and the overall health and safety of our community; in addition, the investment of these funds will continue the established commitment from local and state leaders to help the hospital grow and thrive.'
The release said a minimum of $500,000 will be for enhancements to the hospital's catheterization laboratory, and the remaining funds will be to enhance the hospital's physical plant. Medical Properties Trust, the company Sharon Regional leases the hospital's property from, is also working on projects such as replacing the hospital's roof.
'These infrastructure upgrades are an important step forward for Sharon Regional,' said Butch Eavenson, interim CEO of Sharon Regional, in the release. 'They lay the foundation for consistent, high-quality care and reflect the commitment of those working hard to restore essential services in our community.'
Patient care services will continue during construction. Timelines for construction are still being finalized.
'The work underway at Sharon Regional is focused on creating a strong and sustainable foundation for care delivery,' said Radha Savitala, founder of Tenor Health Foundation. 'Investing in the facility is a critical part of ensuring patients can rely on the care they need, close to home.'
The RACP is a Commonwealth grant program administered by the Office of the Budget for the design, acquisition, and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational, and historical improvement projects.

City officials discuss how population has increased
(WKBN) — US Census figures released a few weeks ago showed that of the 76 communities in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties, only two have increased population in the last four are the City of Columbiana and Fairfield Township, which surround Columbiana. Columbiana in the last four years gained 187 people, and Fairfield Township 150. Behind the new Drug Mart on Route 164 in Columbiana, a new housing development is being built. 'It's going to be a combination of all different types of housing opportunities,' said Mayor Rick Noel. Rick Noel, 75, is Columbiana's mayor, who has lived in Columbiana his whole life. 'It's a recognition regionally, almost that we're a great place to be,' Noel said. Noel highlighted the downtown, where there are no vacancies. Columbiana has an active planning commission and has joined with Salem to have building permits processed in as little as two weeks. 'One of the great things is we have a great city government here, planning commission, park board — we have so many people involved and they're all working in a positive direction,' Noel said. Columbiana also has in place a Community Reinvestment Area — or CRA — which allows people building new homes to pay no property tax for 15 years. 'And there's no doubt that our growth, a lot of our growth, is because of the CRA,' Noel. 'We are at this point piggybacking off Columbiana,' Barry Miner said. Barry Miner is a Fairfield Township Trustee, where the population has also increased. It's primarily a farming community but the Fairfield Trustees have contributed to the growth of Columbiana. The land under the TownCenter at Firestone Farms was once Fairfield Township, but was allowed to be annexed into Columbiana. 'That we are going to work with the city and over the years, if you look at the acreage that we have lost the city of Columbiana by annexation, type 2, it has grown, so we have benefited from that,' Miner said. Minor pointed to a map where shades of yellow indicated areas zoned for housing. With many communities struggling with housing, Fairfield Township could grow. 'In the future, I think there will be some type of growth throughout the township,' Miner said. 'And we've really worked hard to make this a place where people want to come to and want to live and want to enjoy life,' Noel said. Columbiana's Mayor is not yet concerned about too much growth, though he said some people in Columbiana are concerned. There has been a noticeable increase in traffic and, well, Columbiana has just 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. World Environment Day: Coastal Virginia's plastic pollution problem
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Today is World Environment Day, an observance that's been drawing attention to many issues affecting our ecosystems since 1973. Each year, a theme is presented with 2025 focusing on solutions for global plastic pollution. In Virginia, plastic debris is a major concern and clogging many bodies of water. According to Clean Virginia Waterways, 80% of what's detected on the beaches and bodies of water is plastic. 80% of the plastic waste stems from land-based sources. Data from the International Coastal Clean-up shows that cigarette butts are the most commonly found item in waterways. Balloons and construction materials are also infiltrating seashores. 'Even in a neighborhood that might be miles inland if the trash gets into the storm drain, all storm drains lead to water, which eventually will lead in this area to Chesapeake Bay or the Atlantic Ocean,' said Christina Trapani, Clean Virginia Waterways Program Director. Fishery products are also taking a hit. A recent study by CWV found 99% percent of the fish samples contained plastic. Ingesting seafood is another concern. 'Even the smallest plankton are eating microfibers and microplastics,' said Trapani. 'And then as they go up into the food chain, you know, they're either ingesting the plastic themselves or they're ingesting another fish that's eating plastic. So, if we're eating fish, you know, there's a pretty good chance that it's in there.' The Commonwealth currently has a Marine Debris Reduction Plan in effect. It's the first of its kind on the east coast. It was created by Clean Virginia Waterways and the Virginia Coastal Zone Management program. More than 75 partners, organizations, educational institutions and governmental agencies are working on the plastic issues within the plan. 'We managed to get balloon releases banned in Virginia,' says Trapani. 'You know, since that time, we've managed to get a law passed in the General Assembly that allows localities to put a five-cent fee or tax on plastic bags. Richmond just passed that a few days ago.' The Virginia Coastal Zone Management program funds the implementation of Clean Virginia's Waterways' Virginia Marine Debris Reduction Plan through a grant from NOAA, which is federal funding. Trapani says there's a risk they could lose almost half their budget over the Trump Administration's rollout of funding cuts. 'As of right now, we're still kind of in a wait-and-see stage,' she said. 'But yeah, we're aware that it could easily go away and are working on looking at other possible sources of funding. You know, the Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program has been an amazing partner with us for a very long time.' The next Virginia Marine Debris Reduction Plan is set to go into effect in 2026 and run through 2030. Under that plan, they hope to eliminate plastic use entirely in the Commonwealth.
