Sharon Regional Medical Center reopens with ceremonial ribbon-cutting

The Sharon Regional Medical Center in Mercer County has reopened after a tumultuous few months. Local and state leaders gathered Thursday in front of the newly-named Sharon Regional Health System for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting. A ceremonial ribbon-cutting was held Thursday for the reopening of the Sharon Regional Medical Center. KDKA The hospital closed earlier this year after its owner filed for bankruptcy. Last week, the hospital received an additional $2 million in funding from the state and from the hospital's landlord so that they can make much-needed improvements. "We're also investing in the equipment, especially in the cath lab, so that we can maintain the quality standards,' said Radha Savitala, CEO of Sharon Regional Health System. "I think we have a really great core group of people that stayed, that are loyal to the Shenango Valley and to the hospital, and I think we can only build from there," said Pennsylvania Senator Michele Brooks (R-50th District). When the hospital closed in January, nearly 700 people lost their jobs.

State awards Sharon Regional $2 million for improvements

SHARON, Pa. (WKBN) — A $2 million infrastructure improvement grant has been awarded to Sharon Regional Medical Center. Sen. Michele Brooks (R-50) made the announcement on Friday. The grant is being awarded through the Commonwealth's Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP). 'This funding for Sharon Regional demonstrates the commitment at the state level to ensure additional quality healthcare remains sustainable and available to the residents of Sharon and surrounding region,' Brooks said in a news release. 'The successful reopening of Sharon Regional Medical Center has been a critical victory for increased capacity, and the overall health and safety of our community; in addition, the investment of these funds will continue the established commitment from local and state leaders to help the hospital grow and thrive.' The release said a minimum of $500,000 will be for enhancements to the hospital's catheterization laboratory, and the remaining funds will be to enhance the hospital's physical plant. Medical Properties Trust, the company Sharon Regional leases the hospital's property from, is also working on projects such as replacing the hospital's roof. 'These infrastructure upgrades are an important step forward for Sharon Regional,' said Butch Eavenson, interim CEO of Sharon Regional, in the release. 'They lay the foundation for consistent, high-quality care and reflect the commitment of those working hard to restore essential services in our community.' Patient care services will continue during construction. Timelines for construction are still being finalized. 'The work underway at Sharon Regional is focused on creating a strong and sustainable foundation for care delivery,' said Radha Savitala, founder of Tenor Health Foundation. 'Investing in the facility is a critical part of ensuring patients can rely on the care they need, close to home.' The RACP is a Commonwealth grant program administered by the Office of the Budget for the design, acquisition, and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational, and historical improvement projects. Pennsylvania bill looks to increase transparency at the gas pump

PENNSYLVANIA (WTAJ) — A Pennsylvania Senator has reintroduced a bill that would require service station gasoline pumps to display stickers with the rates of federal and state liquid fuels taxes. The legislation, authored by Sen. Michele Brooks, argues that while Pennsylvania has the third highest gas tax in the nation, with the money from the tax meant to go towards repairs on roads and bridges, PennDOT has budgetary woes and continues to ask for more funding towards projects. Brooks added that consumers have a right to know how much of their money is going to the gas tax with every gallon they purchase. In Pennsylvania, every gallon of motor fuel pumped is taxed 76 cents per gallon, with 57.6 cents going towards the Pa. state gasoline tax. The diesel fuel tax is 74.1 cents per gallon, meaning that every gallon pumped is taxed 98.5 cents per gallon when adding in the federal tax, according to the legislation. Brooks' legislation, also known as the 'Fuel Tax Transparency Act,' would require service stations across the Commonwealth to display the rates of federal and state taxes on fuel. This legislation was previously introduced in the last Senate session, however, it was never passed. Brooks noted that Ohio recently implemented a similar law. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Sharon Regional Medical Center set to reopen Tuesday under new ownership

Sharon Regional Medical Center, closed in early January after the bankruptcy of its former corporate owners, will be reopening Tuesday. The hospital, under the ownership of California-based Tenor Health, received the regulatory go-ahead from the Pennsylvania Department of Health late Friday. Tenor Health, which has been in preparation for the reopening for two months, held a community event Sunday. 'It was a full house today at Sharon Regional Medical Center as we came together to celebrate a new chapter for this local community hospital,' state Sen. Michele Brooks, R-50th District, said Sunday on Facebook. 'Opening Tuesday!' Sharon Regional Medical Center closed on Jan. 5 despite efforts from the Shapiro administration and others to keep it open. The 163-bed hospital employed 800 people. But even amid its closing, Tenor Health — a hospital management company — had been working with the owner of the property, Medical Properties Trust, and others to reopen the hospital.
