Thackeray alliance gets zero in Mumbai BEST Credit Society election, BJP leader's panel wins seven of 21 seats
The Mumbai BEST Credit society elections, perceived to be politically significant on the background of the upcoming local body elections, saw the victory of Shashank Rao panel which won 14 of the 21 seats. Significantly, the Thackeray cousins, who had fought the election together as a single panel, could not secure a single seat. Another panel, led by BJP leaders Prasad Lad and Pravin Darekar, secured seven seats. The ruling alliance claimed that the Thackerays has failed the litmus test before the upcoming elections. The elections to the Mumbai BEST Credit Society, which has a membership of over 17,000, was held after a period of nine years. It was controlled by the Shiv Sena (UBT) till before the elections. 'It was the Thackerays who had made this political. We were looking at it as a credit society's election. Now, it seems like the people have rejected the Thackeray brand,' Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said. 'Those who raise doubts about EVMs have received a befitting answer. The people of Maharashtra have decided that those who work should be given the opportunity to work, and those who sit at home should be made to sit at home,' Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde taunted the Thackerays after the result on Wednesday (August 20, 2025). The Thackeray cousins had contested under 'Utkarsh' panel, which had fielded 21 candidates. The 'Sahakar Samruddhi' panel was fielded by BJP leaders Prasad Lad and Praveen Darekar. Shashank Rao, a union leader, had fielded his candidates under the Shashank Rao panel. 'It is wrong to consider this a litmus test. This cannot be compared to the BMC elections,' Sandeep Deshpande, MNS leaders, said. He had earlier claimed that money was distributed during the campaign. Shiv Sena UBT leader Suhas Samant too claimed that his party could not stand against the money power. Shashank Rao, after winning the election, slammed Uddhav Thackeray and claimed that the result was a reply by the BEST workers against the Shiv Sena UBT's policy of privatisation, against playing with the future of the employees and diverting the gratuity funds to fill the coffers of the favourite contractors. 'It is not just about this election. Basically, the whole focus is always on what you do. Credit society was not the issue. This time, we got into the campaign very late. But the workers were really agitated with the condition which was created. The recruitments were pending for years, employees had not received the benefits of the Seventh Pay Commission. Several retired employees had not received their gratuity for three years,' he told The Hindu. He said that of the 17,000 members, 15,093 employees were enrolled as voters. 'Each winning panelist got more than 4000 votes,' he said.

Making a point: On the election of the Vice-President
The BJP-led NDA and the Congress-led Opposition parties have announced their respective candidates for the post of the Vice-President of India, which fell vacant after the abrupt and intriguing resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, 2025, setting the stage for a fresh face-off. The numbers are foretold and there is no surprise in store about the outcome. However, this is a significant ideological battle, and both sides see it as such. The NDA's candidate, C.P. Radhakrishnan, is a veteran RSS activist from Tamil Nadu, who has served as a two-term Member of Parliament, from 1998 to 2004. He is the Governor of Maharashtra. The INDIA bloc parties have chosen B. Sudershan Reddy, a retired judge of the Supreme Court of India, born and raised in undivided Andhra Pradesh. The NDA has a majority and is on a drive to canvas additional unattached individual voters and parties such as the BJD and the BRS. The YSRCP, bitterly opposed to the TDP, the NDA's partner, in Andhra Pradesh, has pledged its support to Mr. Radhakrishnan. Justice Reddy's candidacy has set off some regionalist political posturing in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, while Mr. Radhakrishnan's has caused the same in Tamil Nadu. On this count, the INDIA bloc managed to push back the NDA's attempt to put the DMK on the defensive ahead of the State Assembly election. The BJP hopes that Mr. Radhakrishnan's elevation will gain it some mileage in the Assembly election. The political messaging cannot be clearer. By offering the second-highest office in the country to a life-long adherent of Hindutva, the BJP has fastened its ties with its mother ship, the RSS. Mr. Radhakrishnan's profile is in stark contrast with Mr. Dhankhar, who was a late entrant into the Sangh Parivar and failed to fit in. The BJP has used state power, which it controls, in a systematic and effective manner to advance Hindutva. Numerous personality clashes notwithstanding, these shared convictions hold the Sangh Parivar together. Not only has the BJP managed to hold its existing partners firmly behind its candidate but it has also managed to win over the YSRCP. As for the Congress and the Opposition, Justice Reddy's candidacy is an assertion of its resistance to the Parivar and an attempt to amplify their social justice slogan. Justice Reddy recently headed the 11-member independent expert working group that had analysed and interpreted the data collected during the Telangana Congress government's Socio, Economic, Education, Employment, Political and Caste (SEEEPC) Survey 2024. They also hope to use this contest as a rallying cry for the Opposition to consolidate against the BJP.

Centre tables Bills to remove PM, CMs, ministers held on criminal charges amid fierce Opposition uproar
Amid continuous noisy protests, the House was adjourned till 3 pm. As the protests escalated, BJP members, including Union Ministers Ravneet Singh Bittu and Kiren Rijiju came near Shah and there was a brief jostling between Opposition and ruling party MPs. Three House marshals formed a protective ring around Shah. Even after the House was adjourned, the Opposition members continued with the sloganeering. The three Bills are the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025; the Constitution (One Hundred And Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025; and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025. The Bills have proposed that if the prime minister, union ministers or chief ministers, are arrested and detained in custody for 30 consecutive days for offences that attract a jail term of at least five years, they will lose their job on the 31st day. Opposing the Bill at the introduction stage, Owaisi said the Constitution is being amended to "destabilise governments". Tewari echoed similar views, saying that one is "innocent till proven guilty". "... this Bill is against the jurisprudence of criminal justice and distorts Parliamentary democracy. The bill opens door for political misuse and throws all constitutional safeguards to the winds," he said. RSP MP NK Premchandran alleged that the Bills are being introduced in "undue haste." "These Bills are not being introduced as per the procedures of the House. What is the undue haste in bringing such important Bills that they have not even been circulated to the members," he said. According to the Bill, there is no provision under the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963 (20 of 1963) for the removal of the chief minister or a minister arrested and detained in custody on account of serious criminal charges. Hence, there is a need to amend section 45 of the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963, to provide a legal framework for the removal of a chief minister or a minister in such cases.
