Florida Derby 2025 Odds, Picks And Horses To Watch On Road To The Kentucky Derby

Forbes29-03-2025
The Road to the Kentucky Derby continues with two of the biggest championship series races on Saturday, March 29. The Florida Derby will draw plenty of watch and wager action on FanDuelTV along with the Arkansas Derby as major points races ahead of the May 3 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. The 74th running of the $1 million Florida Derby (G1) drew 10 entries and headlines Saturday's card at Gulfstream Park that includes 10 stakes races (5 graded).
Fan-favorite race announcer Pete Aiello will call the Florida Derby and all of Saturday's races at Gulfstream Park.
Last Saturday's Louisiana Derby saw another longshot winner as Tiztastic (7/1) became the sixth horse at closing parimutuel odds of 7/1 or longer to win a championship series race this year with nine contested thus far. Another 100 points to the winner and 50 points to the runner-up in the Florida Derby and Arkansas Derby will secure the horses a spot in the Kentucky Derby if not yet qualified.
Along with wagering on the biggest races at FanDuel Racing, horse racing fans can tune into FanDuelTV to watch the Florida Derby and Arkansas Derby Saturday. The channel will broadcast racing from Gulfstream Park and Oaklawn Park, along with other tracks featured across FanDuelTV's broadcasts.
The Florida Derby will also be televised on CNBC and streamed on Peacock during a one-hour show as part of NBC Sports' Road to the Kentucky Derby series. The show will air from 6-7 p.m. ET on Sat., March 29 and the Gulfstream Park Oaks will also be highlighted on Saturday's show. .
For horse players looking to cash in on exacta and trifecta payouts and big bonus pools in the Pick 5, then get in on the action Saturday for the final weekend of the Championship Meet at Gulfstream Park.
Along with horse racing coverage and Florida Derby picks on FanDuel, I turned to the experts at Guaranteed Tip Sheet (GTS) and their Florida Derby wagering guide for more insight on the biggest races Saturday at Gulfstream headlined by the $1 million Florida Derby at 1 1/8 miles. Top win contenders are provided, and additional value plays, longshots along with more race details and analysis is available in the wagering guide.
Race 14 - Florida Derby
Value Plays and Longshots: #4 Disruptor (4/1) with jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. & trainer Todd Pletcher makes his stakes debut after winning a pair of maiden races as heavy favorite. #8 Madaket Road (7/2) finished 2nd in the Rebel Stakes for trainer Bob Baffert and HOF jockey Mike Smith rides him for the first time. Madaket Road is the only horse in the Florida Derby to race somewhere other than Gulfstream last out.
Guaranteed Tip Sheet notes that Bill Mott-trained Sovereignty is improving by the race and should creep into contention out of the turn with jockey Manny Franco guiding his surge home with strong late legs. Sovereignty is 2-for-2 in graded stakes starts and went last to first to capture the Fountain of Youth a month ago at Gulfstream. Tappan Street had a wide trip in his last bust should be in a better position early in this race with jockey Luis Saez riding for trainer Brad Cox. Neoequos will head to the front and try to stay there with jockey Edgard Zayas, and he's perhaps the best value in the race for trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. Disruptor cost more than $1 million and could live up to that price tag here.
Sovereignty has posted 99 and 98 Equibase Speed Figures (ESF) in his two stakes races with the Fountain of Youth win earning him 50 points to already qualify for the Kentucky Derby. Madaket Road has the fastest ESF of the runners in this race having posted a 102 in winning the Rebel Stakes. Both Sovereignty and Tappan Street are sons of super sire Into Mischief, who has sired 8 Breeders' Cup winners and 22 Grade 1 winners with Authentic the 2020 Kentucky Derby winner and Mandaloun the 2021 Kentucky Derby winner on disqualification.
More Florida Derby horses and contenders notes from FanDuel Racing. Seven Florida Derby runners have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby since 2000. Mage, who finished 2nd in the 2023 Florida Derby, was the last horse to come out of Gulfstream Park's marquee race for 3-year-olds and go on to win the Kentucky Derby.
Also, follow the 3-year-old fillies as they compete for points to qualify for the 2025 Kentucky Oaks on May 2. The $250,000 Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) is Race 9 Saturday and seven 3-year-old fillies are entered with a pair of favorites expected to decide the race.
Guaranteed Tip Sheet picks #4 Five G (8/5) to win over #3 The Queen M G (9/5) making her first start over two-turns. Also, #6 Cassiar (5/1) a challenger making her second start with the most upside.
Along with the Florida Derby and Arkansas Derby, more Kentucky Derby Championship Series coverage ahead. The final three 100-point win races are next Saturday, April 5 as horse racing fans enjoy the Derby Trail and try to cash in on the biggest watch and wager races until the Run for the Roses May 3 at Churchill Downs.

Sean Payton shortened play calls and developed 'entirely new' RPOs for Bo Nix

During an interview with FanDuel TV's Kay Adams on the Up & Adams show last week, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton revealed two interesting nuggets about the team's operation going into quarterback Bo Nix's second season in the NFL. First, Payton said some of the language for his notoriously long play calls has been simplified. "We put the [playbook] together in a way where, instead of calling '22, flanker drive, halfback burst,' we might just call it 'Uber,'" Payton told Adams. "Them being able to get to the line of scrimmage and use one word -- these players are operating and thinking differently and more spontaneously." That's probably something Russell Wilson would have appreciated in Denver as the offense was oft-criticized for getting out of the huddle slowly during the Wilson era. Another interesting nugget: Payton said, "There's an entirely new element to the RPOs that [Nix is] comfortable with, that we're comfortable with. That we've researched and we develop those into the plan." The conversation about changes with the offense starts around the 12-minute mark of the interview: The shorter play calls should help Nix get in and out of the huddle efficiently, and the run-pass options (RPOs) will be fascinating to watch this season. Nix threw 80 times for 692 yards and rushed 11 times for 45 yards on RPOs last season, according to Pro Football Reference. Expect to see a new wrinkle to those types of plays in 2025. Tesla Optimus rival Unitree shines at the 'World Humanoid Robot Games' in China

The first "World Humanoid Robot Games" is in the books. The three-day competition hosted in Beijing wrapped on Sunday, attracting 280 teams from 16 countries, including the U.S. Teams used robots manufactured by Chinese companies such as Unitree and Booster. During the games, humanoid athletes competed in dance battles, martial arts, track and field events such as the 400-meter and 1500-meter races and long jump, and a soccer tournament. "Robots have stronger joints and core strength," said Guo Tong, who programmed one of the futuristic footballers for his team, Hephaestus. Guo said he sees robots replacing his idol, soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo, by 2050. "Robots are easier to coach," Chinese Olympic boxer Li Yang told CNBC while watching his robot slug it out with another. "Humans are emotional." Hangzhou-based Unitree, seen as a competitor to Tesla's Optimus, won multiple medals. Beijing-based X-Humanoid and Hong Kong-listed Shenzhen firm UBTECH also impressed. The Chinese government has targeted humanoid robots as a key future industry for the economy and Beijing has plans to build a world-class industry of humanoid robots by 2027. The games are the latest in a series of events and programs aimed at promoting humanoid robot technology. China announced plans to hold its second Olympics-style event for humanoid robots next August. Robots also put job skills to the test, showcasing their abilities as drug store clerks, factory workers, and hotel staff. One challenge for a robot in housekeeping was to pick up all the garbage in a mock hotel room and take out the trash. Referees told CNBC the biggest obstacle for those robots was opening and closing the door. Robot designer Wang Xidong says the competition is key to testing the robots' skills and improving them. "We are refining our robots," Wang said. "Everyone feels motivated to compete."

MSNBC to change name to 'MS NOW' in Comcast spinoff deal

MSNBC is set to change its name as part of Comcast's spin-off from NBC Universal, which the company announced in late 2024, according to the Wall Street Journal. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on Monday that the left-leaning network's new name will be "My Source News Opinion World," or MS NOW. CNBC, USA, Oxygen and E! are also included in the Comcast spin-off. CNBC is going to keep its name, according to the WSJ, but is working on a new logo. The move is part of the networks' attempt to separate themselves from NBC, the Journal reported. Cesar Conde will continue leading the NBCUniversal News Group, but now that group only includes NBC News, the NBC News Now streaming service, Telemundo and owned-and-operated local stations. Msnbc Staffers Lash Out At 'Morning Joe' Co-hosts Meeting With Trump: 'Disgusting But Frankly Unsurprising' Read On The Fox News App Msnbc's Revamped Lineup Flounders, Jen Psaki Sheds 47% Of Predecessors' Viewership NBC, Bravo and Peacock (NBC's streaming service) will remain under NBC Universal. "Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ: CMCSA) today announced its intent to create a new publicly traded company comprised of a strong portfolio of NBCUniversal's cable television networks, including USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and Golf Channel along with complementary digital assets including Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow and Sports Engine, through a tax-free spin-off. The well-capitalized independent company ("SpinCo") will have significant scale as a pure-play set of assets anchored by leading news, sports and entertainment content," a November press release from Comcast read. Click Here For More Coverage Of Media And Culture Mark Lazarus, who will serve as the head of the new company, Versant, told the WSJ that they hoped to mitigate "brand confusion" in the spin-off. Lazarus told the WSJ that MS NOW would still cater to a progressive audience and prioritize "holding the political figures from both parties to account." "Change requires flexibility, adaptability, and an open mind. This change is good for us," MSNBC's Senior vice president of communications, Richard Hudock wrote in a post on X. The network's morning show, "Morning Joe" also reacted to the news on Monday. "What I've said on this show time and time again is you look at the people that are running the company, they're entrepreneurial. Right, like when you have somebody come into your company after working for big corporations and you're talking, you're sitting there and they go, we want you to be entrepreneurial. We want you to come up with new ideas. We want you to push the boundaries. I'm excited about that. So I'm excited about this, too. It's like, what's in a name? Well, whatever you put into the name," co-host Joe Scarborough said. No Trump Bump: Msnbc Hemorrhaging Viewers Since Election Day, Sheds More Than Half Of Primetime Audience Andrew Ross Sorkin, who co-hosts "Squawk Box" on CNBC and frequently appears on MSNBC, said he liked the new name. "I like this because I think it actually does have the sort of independence and actually gets away in some ways from even the idea of legacy media," Sorkin said. MSNBC host Rachel Maddow reacted to the name change in a statement to Variety. "If there was ever a time for us to change our name, this is it — because we're not just separating from NBC News in corporate terms, we're competing with them now. So I think the distinction is going to be good for us," Maddow said. "What NBC doing in its legacy timeslots — the Today Show, Nightly, Meet the Press — is just a world away from the 24/7 totally independent news operation that we're able to stand up now, thanks to the spin-off."Original article source: MSNBC to change name to 'MS NOW' in Comcast spinoff deal Solve the daily Crossword
