L.A. Woman: Jamie Lee Curtis Leads Rebuilding Efforts After Devastating Pacific Palisades Fire

Yahoo09-03-2025

"Where I live is on fire right now,' Jamie Lee Curtis said, her voice shaking, as she sat down on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in New York City on the night of Jan. 7 for a prescheduled taping. She had left L.A. that morning, and on the flight, messages began flying in from her 'many, many, many friends' whose houses in her tightknit Westside neighborhood had been incinerated in a blaze fueled by hurricane-force Santa Ana winds — leaving homes and businesses reduced to ash. Her husband, filmmaker and actor Christopher Guest, and their rescue dog, Runi, were among the throngs forced to flee toward the Pacific Coast Highway under mandatory evacuation orders that afternoon.
'Literally, the entire city of Pacific Palisades is burning,' Curtis said on television through tears. 'It's fucking gnarly, you guys. It's just a catastrophe.' Then, the producer, actor, American Red Cross ambassador and lifelong 'Angelena,' as she's quick to call herself, swallowed hard and urged viewers to 'do anything you can in your community to help people.'Curtis immediately took action and promised $1 million through her family's foundation, My Hand In Yours, aimed at fire relief efforts — funding that has already bolstered the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, which is the nonprofit arm of the LAFD; the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank; the California Community Foundation Wildfire Recovery Fund; and the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region. Her home was not among the 6,831 structures devoured by flames, or the more than 12,317 seriously damaged in the deadly Palisades Fire that left a dozen people dead. But her community was decimated: The church where she got sober. Her daughters' schools. Grocery stores and small business. All gone. Curtis and many others in the ravaged burn zones of the Palisades and neighboring Malibu are determined to breathe new life into what was lost.'Greater minds than mine are going to need to come together to rebuild,' Curtis tells Los Angeles. 'We have passion, and we have creativity. We need to put our money where our mouths are and help those who need it most.'In a strange twist of irony, Curtis has spent years understanding the aftermath of a disastrous wildfire. After reading the riveting 2021 book, Paradise: One Town's Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire by Lizzie Johnson, she teamed up with producer Jason Blum to option it. This year, their film The Lost Bus, starring Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera, will be released — centered on the harrowing true story of a bus driver and a teacher who navigated a school bus full of children through the 2018 Camp Fire in Butte County that killed 85 people. When they began filming, of course Curtis had no idea that she would soon be witnessing similar acts of bravery from her very own neighbors, who started a neighborhood watch that acted like a small fire brigade looking for smoldering embers, and held fundraisers — acts of unfettered kindness that will be critical as they start to rebuild. One month after the fires, the 2023 Oscar winner posted a message for her six million Instagram followers: 'Be very gentle with people as you make your way through the world because you have no idea what they have been through and what they are carrying in their hearts and I mean that about everything everywhere all at once.'

Orlando Bloom Says This Rocker Inspired His ‘Deep Cover' Character Who Takes Himself ‘Too Seriously'

As a lifelong Oasis fan, Orlando Bloom knew exactly who he wanted to emulate in his new movie, Deep Cover: Liam Gallagher. While guesting on The Tonight Show Tuesday (June 10), the Pirates of the Caribbean star opened up about channeling the 'Wonderwall' singer in his role as an extremely dedicated method actor, who in Deep Cover goes too far after he's recruited by the police to help with a sting operation. 'Seeing any actor take themselves too seriously — something I've never been guilty of, by the way — it's just low-hanging fruit, but it's fantastic,' Bloom began, laughing. 'He goes deep method … cuts his hair, then turns into, basically, Liam Gallagher. I grew up with Oasis, and I went to Knebworth, [which] was one of my favorite concerts.' 'Basically Liam is the swag bag of the band, you know, so the physicality was there for me, the accent was there for me,' Bloom added of the famously brash singer of the Manchester rock band. The interview comes just two days ahead of Deep Cover's June 12 premiere on Prime Video. The flick also stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Nick Mohammed as fellow improv enthusiasts tapped for the mission Bloom's character gets involved in. And while the Lord of the Rings star has been gearing up for the film's release, his famous fiancée — Katy Perry — has been traveling the globe on her Lifetimes Tour, kicking off its Australian leg on June 4. Bloom did show off who's been keeping him company while the pop star is on the trek on The Tonight Show, bringing his impossibly tiny dog, Biggie Smalls, with him to the interview with Fallon. Also hitting the road soon is Oasis, with Liam and Noel Gallagher reuniting this summer for their first tour in more than 16 years following the end of the two brothers' bitter feud. The Oasis Live '25 Tour will kick off July 4 with a show at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, followed by performances across Europe, North America, Asia, Australia and Latin America. Zoe Saldaña Says Her ‘Emilia Pérez' Oscar Is ‘Trans': The Statue ‘Goes by They/Them'

Zoe Saldaña is making a statement: Her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 'Emilia Pérez' identifies as 'trans.' Saldaña, who won the statue for playing a lawyer who helps a cartel boss (Karla Sofía Gascón) undergo gender-affirming surgery, told People that the award 'goes by they/them.' 'We have it in my office and my Oscar is gender fluid,' Saldaña said. Saldaña later likened her Oscar win to being 'the World Cup of acting,' at least as her sons Zen, Bowie, and Cy with husband and filmmaker Marco Perego understand it. Saldaña also had won a BAFTA, a Critics Choice Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for her role in 'Emilia Pérez.' Lead star Gascón, who is trans, was nominated for Best Actress as well. Saldaña isn't the first Best Supporting Actress winner to refer to her Oscar as they/them. Jamie Lee Curtis supported her trans daughter Ruby in 2023 by saying her 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' Oscar is part of the push to have genderless awards categories, much like what the Gothams pioneered. When asked during the 'Today' show by co-host Savannah Guthrie if Curtis had 'named her,' in reference to the statue, Curtis said that the statuette is genderless as a statement for transgender rights. 'I'm in support of my daughter Ruby. I'm having them be a they/them,' Curtis said. 'I'm going to just call them 'them.' They/them, and they are doing great, they're settling in, and I just, in my life, I never saw it in a million years that I'd have these couple days, and I'm very moved by the whole thing.' She previously had addressed non-gendered awards categories while backstage at the 2023 Oscars. 'The bigger question is how do you include everyone when there are binary choices, which is very difficult, and as the mother of a trans daughter, I completely understand that,' Curtis said. 'And yet to de-gender the categories, I'm concerned that will diminish the opportunities for more women, which is something I've been working hard to promote. The most important thing is inclusivity and more women…basically just more fucking women anywhere, anytime, all at once.' Jimmy Fallon Remixes ‘Somebody That I Used to Know' in Honor of Trump-Musk ‘National Divorce'

Jimmy Fallon is happy to report that Donald Trump and Elon Musk are totally thriving as they move on from their feud. And he has a music video to prove it. 'Well, it seems like Trump and Elon's feud has calmed down a bit. The two still aren't speaking, but they did release this music video today,' Fallon said on Tuesday night. The chords for Gotye's 'Somebody That I Used to Know' then started as 'The Tonight Show' stitched together audio clips of both Musk and Trump singing the lyrics to the breakup anthem. Musk started off the song with 'You didn't have to cut me off' before Trump took it away with 'Make it out like it never happened and that we were nothing.' Musk then chimed back in with 'Guess that I don't need that though' with Trump closing it out with the iconic line 'Now you're just somebody that I used to know.' That isn't the only breakup song joke Fallon had. 'The fallout continues over Trump's national divorce from Elon Musk. And Trump said he's not even thinking about Elon,' Fallon said earlier in his monologue. To prove his point, the comedian shared a sketch that featured 'The Tonight Show's' version of Trump asking if Musk had called, texted, emailed, faxed, poked, slacked or slid into his DMs. After a Secret Service member stoically responds 'no' to Trump's many questions, the sketch showed bright rave-like colors flashing from the windows of the White House as fake Trump sang Robyn's 'Dancing on My Own.'
