Ice skating facility coming to Dwarka
The ice rink, designed to meet international benchmarks, will be built at the cloverleaf within the
Dwarka Sports Complex
. 'The initiative, conceptualised and being executed under the guidance of lieutenant governor VK Saxena, would serve the dual purpose of providing recreational avenues to the people of Delhi, besides creating a state-of-the-art infrastructure for the training of sports enthusiasts,' officials said.
Located close to the Urban Extension Road, the site is easily accessible from the Dwarka Expressway junction and the airport tunnel connecting Dwarka Sector 21 with IGI Terminal 3.
The executing agency has been allotted the land and the project will be developed on a licence-fee model for 15 years. The selected builder will complete the construction in partnership with international collaborators.

Filling a sports infrastructure gap
'LG directed DDA to explore the possibility of creating such a facility in Delhi,' TOI quoted a DDA official as sayin. 'It was felt that spaces in the capital for enthusiasts to train and participate and for organisers to host events in these sporting activities were limited. Hence, the decision to create an ice skating rink.'
The project also aims to promote ice-based sports such as skating, curling, ice hockey and figure skating, which have seen rising interest across India. It will also serve as a climate-controlled indoor recreational option during Delhi's long summer.
A DDA official added, 'DDA is systematically transforming Dwarka into a modern, well-planned sub-city. It is being developed with a focus on infrastructure, connectivity, green spaces, sports and recreational facilities.'
The Dwarka Sector 23 complex is one of three centres of excellence being developed by DDA. This centre will focus on football, hockey and ice skating. The Sector 8 facility, inaugurated in May, specialises in boxing, wrestling, weightlifting and taekwondo. Another centre in Sector 19, focusing on tennis and shooting, is under construction.
Balloon rides on the Yamuna floodplain
In a separate move, DDA has shortlisted an agency to operate hot air balloon rides at four locations on the Yamuna floodplain — Asita, Baansera, Yamuna Sports Complex, and CWG Village Sports Complex.
This will mark the first time residents will be able to enjoy aerial views of the city through recreational balloon flights. The initiative adds a new dimension to the capital's leisure options and comes alongside the broader push to enhance Delhi's recreational infrastructure.

Ex-Tata employee leaves posh property to caregiver's granddaughter who brought him love in his final years
In a touching story of love beyond blood ties , a city civil court has granted a young woman the right to inherit a flat left to her by an 89-year-old man who cared for her like a daughter. Gustad Borjorji Engineer , a former employee of Tata Industries , passed away in February 2014. A month before his death, he wrote a will leaving behind his 159-square yard flat in Shahibaug, Ahmedabad, to 13-year-old Amisha Makwana, the granddaughter of his long-time caregiver. His wife had died in 2001, and he had no surviving legal heirs. Over the years, he developed a close bond with young Amisha, who often visited his home with her grandmother, who worked for the Engineer family as a cook. According to the will, written on 12 January 2014 in the presence of two witnesses and notarised, Engineer wanted Amisha to have the flat. At the time, she was still a minor, so he named his nephew, Behram Engineer, as the executor and her legal guardian until she reached adulthood. In 2023, Amisha approached the city civil court through her lawyer, advocate Adil Saiyed, to request probate of the will, the legal process that confirms a will is valid. She told the court that she had lived with Engineer, cared for him, and that he saw her as family. Out of love and affection, he had left her the property. Live Events The court issued a public notice asking if anyone had objections to the will, but no one came forward. Engineer's own brother even submitted a No Objection Certificate in Amisha's favour. On 2 August 2025, the court granted probate and issued her a succession certificate, officially transferring ownership of the property to her. Now an adult working in the human resources department of a private firm, Amisha fondly remembers her bond with the man she called 'Tai.' 'He was like both my mother and father. Until I was 13, he was my protective shield,' she told The Times of India (TOI). She also revealed that Engineer had once considered adopting her, but ultimately chose not to. 'He didn't want to change my religion or identity. He knew adoption might separate me from my own parents. He always hoped that I would receive love and care from both families,' she said. Chennai Grand Masters: Playing hall unaffected despite fire issue, players back at venue
CHENNAI: Chennai Grand Masters suffered an unexpected jolt even before its first move as a fire incident occurred at the chess tournament's venue in the early hours of Wednesday, the opening day of the classical event. An electrical issue on the ninth floor of Hyatt Regency led to a fire breakout around midnight, filling the hotel with smoke and making breathing difficult for the people in it. Responding to the grim situation, the tournament organisers shifted those associated with the event to a nearby hotel and postponed the start by a day. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Since the players, staff and officials were housed well below the ninth floor, they were not severely affected by the incident. Grandmaster Srinath Narayanan, a member of the tournament's organising committee, said that the contingent had to be immediately moved to another hotel for a one-night accommodation, considering the safety of the members. Poll Do you think the decision to postpone the tournament was the right one? Yes, safety first! No, it could have gone ahead. 'We were told that there was an electrical fire on one of the top floors. It was a fairly minor incident. As a precautionary measure, the guests were evacuated from the hotel,' Srinath told TOI. 'The players were shifted to Hotel Pullman around midnight and returned to Hyatt in the morning,' said Srinath, adding that the playing hall at Hyatt is unaffected. Leon Mendonca, who will feature in the challengers category of the 20-player tournament, admitted that he would not have been in a position to play in the first round if the tournament had gone as per schedule. 'The organisers decided to postpone the event and cancel the rest day, which is a very good decision. I would not have been comfortable playing right after the incident,' said the 19-year-old GM. Local hope B Adhiban, another player from the challengers section, remarked that the players were 'never in any sort of trouble'. 'I had prior experience and that is why I did not take it seriously. Something similar happened to me during the Grand Swiss event a few years ago,' said GM Adhiban, a member of two Olympiad bronze-winning India teams. Narrating the experience, Adhiban said: 'I kept my mobile on flight mode and slept off. The hotel staff had tried to contact me. When I woke up to use the restroom, I realised that one of the lights in my room was switched on. When I tried to switch it off, I could not, so I knew that something was off. I opened the door and there was smoke all around. A hotel employee then came to my room and asked me to evacuate.' The tournament will begin on Thursday and run every day until August 15. The organisers had to remove the only rest day – earlier slotted for August 11 – to make up for lost time. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Test and T20I returns on the anvil for Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer (AP Photo) MUMBAI: After being ignored from India's tour of England this summer, Shreyas Iyer , who is currently only in India's ODI team, could be in line for a comeback in the T20I and Test team. TOI has learnt that Iyer is likely to be recalled for India's T20I and Test side when the selectors meet sometime in Aug to pick the squad for the Asia Cup in UAE, which will be played in the T20 format from Sept 9, and the two-Test series against West Indies from Oct 2 in Ahmedabad. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The 30-year-old Mumbai cricketer is in serious contention for a spot in the middle order in all formats of the game. 'We need Iyer's class and experience in the middle order in all formats. It's something which we missed in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The selectors are aware that Iyer is an excellent player of spin bowling, which will be crucial in a home season that involves four Tests — two each against West Indies and South Africa,' sources told TOI. Inside The Oval: An Exclusive Tour of the Stadium Where India Played the Final Test Iyer has been picked in the West Zone team for the Duleep Trophy, which will be played at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence from Aug 28. Seeded into the semis by virtue of being the defending champions, West Zone will directly play in the semifinals of the tournament from Sept 4. Poll Should Shreyas Iyer be recalled to the T20I and Test squad for the upcoming series? Yes, he deserves a chance No, we have enough options Maybe, depends on his performance Iyer has been out of favour in Tests since a back issue and poor form saw him lose his berth during the home series against England last year. The decision-makers, however, feel Iyer has done all the right things since losing his contract after expressing a reluctance to play domestic cricket. The 30-year-old was in decent form for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy , scoring 480 runs at 68.57, with two centuries, in five matches last season. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Overall, Iyer has scored 811 runs in 14 Tests at 36.86, including one hundred and five fifties. He played the last of his 14 Tests against England in Vizag in Feb last year. The 30-year-old Mumbaikar was India's top run-getter in their Champions Trophy triumph in Dubai in March, scoring 243 runs in five matches at an average of 48.60, including two fifties. His knocks of 45 off 62 balls against Australia in the semifinal and 48 off 62 balls in the final proved crucial. Nair not to play Duleep Trophy Meanwhile, TOI has learnt that middle-order batter Karun Nair suffered a minor fracture on his finger after being struck on the hand by a rising delivery during the second innings of the Oval Test. Nair will not play for Central Zone in the upcoming Duleep Trophy. The 33-year-old batter, who moved back to Karnataka from Vidarbha, scored 205 runs in four Tests at an average of 25.62, with one fifty in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. No Sri Lanka series in August India will not be going to Sri Lanka for a white-ball series in Aug. It is learnt that post a gruelling five-Test series in England, the Indian team has been given a rare 'complete rest' by the BCCI, which means that Team India will only resume playing international cricket with the Asia Cup in Sept. 'The players requested for a break after the England series. There is a hectic international schedule for India from Sept, which also involves going to Australia for a white-ball series in Oct,' sources said. Pant won't require surgery Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant won't require surgery after a toe fracture during the fourth Test in Manchester. However, Pant has been ruled out of action for at least six weeks. He will miss the Asia Cup and possibly the West Indies series. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
