Southampton reject West Ham transfer offer for Mateus Fernandes
The bid worth up to £30million including add-ons fell considerably short of the Championship club's valuation and was turned down without a counter proposal.
Fernandes — under contract at St Mary's until 2029 — is valued by Southampton similarly to fellow midfielder Romeo Lavia, who left for Chelsea in the summer of 2023 in a £58m deal.

Talks will only resume if West Ham or any other suitor shows a willingness to get closer to that level.
Southampton would be willing to sell at what they deem to be the right price but regard him as their best performer after accumulating among the most Premier League minutes for a player under the age of 21 last season.
The Portugal Under-21 international joined the south-coast club from Sporting CP in August of last year.
He went on to make 44 appearances in all competitions last term, including 36 in the Premier League.
Fernandes featured as a second-half substitute in Saturday's Championship opener, playing the final 30 minutes of the 2-1 win over Wrexham.
West Ham have signed defender El Hadji Malick Diouf from Slavia Prague and goalkeeper Mads Hermansen from Leicester City.
Free agents Kyle Walker-Peters and Callum Wilson have also arrived while defender Jean Clair-Todibo had his move from Nice made permanent.

Alonso's Real Madrid start La Liga with fresh energy
Real Madrid, featuring several new signings, approach the new season with fresh hope under recently-appointed coach Xabi Alonso, looking to turn the page on a disappointing end to the Carlo Ancelotti era with "ambitious" football. Former Liverpool and Los Blancos midfielder Alonso saw at the Club World Cup in the United States this summer there is plenty of work to do, as Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Madrid 4-0 in the semi-final. "Things are going to be different... we are starting from scratch," said Alonso, although some of his findings from the tournament will undoubtedly influence his approach. Madrid fans also got their first glimpse of the Basque tactician's plans, and also of England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold. Alonso showed tactical flexibility, utilising both a four-man and three-man defence, whereas his predecessor Ancelotti tended to stick with four at the back and was criticised for not being adaptive enough in games. By contrast Alonso was keen to adjust things during matches if he could, including the positioning of his players, and keen to impress on his squad they must all help defensively and with pressing. "We need and want everyone to defend -- the 11 players on the pitch have to be involved defensively," said Alonso during the tournament, asked specifically about star forwards Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe. "They have to know how we want to press, and without that, things will be very complicated," continued Alonso. "Vini, Jude (Bellingham), Fede (Valverde), Kylian, those up front, the defence has to push forward too." Alonso is looking to obtain the balance that Ancelotti failed to achieve last season following Mbappe's arrival from PSG. Although the French superstar struck 43 goals under Ancelotti it was not enough to inspire a Madrid side that finished the season without a major trophy, while Barcelona reclaimed La Liga as part of a domestic treble. Mbappe's illness with a stomach bug kept him out of Madrid's group matches at the Club World Cup, but on his first start was in the destruction by PSG. "We have to be self-critical, but it will also serve us as a guide for where we need to improve," said Alonso. If Alonso can find the formula for Mbappe and Vinicius to work together without sacrificing too much out of possession remains to be seen, while winger Rodrygo Goes does not appear to be part of the coach's plans, playing a bit-part role in the States. - Goodbyes and new faces - Madrid go into the season without Luka Modric in the squad for the first time in over a decade, with the Croatian's experience and quality a big miss for a side lacking some guile in midfield. Los Blancos' hope is for Turkish playmaker Arda Guler to be able to thrive there and become a player who can control the tempo of a game. "The coach is trying to make us have more control of the game, and that's better for me," said Guler. The 20-year-old should get plenty of chances to play at the start of the season with Jude Bellingham sidelined until around mid-October after shoulder surgery to solve a long-running issue. By then new arrival and fellow England international Alexander-Arnold may have established himself in the side. The full-back, who joined from Liverpool before the end of his contract so he could play at the Club World Cup, adds further attacking quality to a Madrid squad brimming with it. Madrid hope Dean Huijsen could help solve some issues at the back, while Alvaro Carreras and Franco Mastantuono also join, with Los Blancos spending over 170 million euros ($200 million) this summer. Dani Carvajal's return from a long-term knee injury is another piece of good news for a Madrid side who need it after their 2024-25 campaign was more noteworthy for the club's attacks on referees than for success on the field. Scott Boland responds to calls for Nathan Lyon to lose Aussie spot in Ashes series
Scott Boland insists he's a 'better bowler' now compared to his last Ashes series and is excited by the prospect of facing England on our seamer-friendly wickets later this year. But the Aussie fan favourite doesn't expect veteran spinner Nathan Lyon to be dropped at his expense, despite former Test star Brendan Julian calling for selectors to use a four-pronged pace attack in at least some of the Ashes Tests. Boland had a dream Ashes debut during the home series in 2021-22 when he famously took figures of 6-7 in four overs during the Boxing Day Test as Australia retained the famous urn. Boland took 18 wickets at 9.55 in that Ashes series but struggled two years later in England, where he took just two wickets at 115.50 after featuring in just two Tests at Edgbaston and Headingley. But Boland's Test record at home is nothing short of extraordinary and the nature of Australia's pace-friendly pitches strengthens the case for his inclusion. The Victorian accepts that he's behind star pace trio Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood in the Aussie pecking order, but declared he'll be ready to go if called upon to get another crack in the Ashes. "I've obviously thought about it a lot since it happened in 2023," Boland said. "But I still think there were times in England where I bowled pretty well and just didn't get a wicket. I'm a better bowler than I was back then. I'm going to be in our conditions that I know really, really well. I'm hoping to put in some good performances." Boland was picked ahead of Lyon in Australia's last Test match in Jamaica, where he took a stunning hat-trick to help bowl the West Indies out for 27 as Australia completed a 3-0 series whitewash. It came during extreme extreme conditions in Jamaica played with a pink Dukes ball, but Boland can't see selectors going with a four-pronged pace attack again in Australia, particularly with all-rounder Cameron Green set to return to the bowling attack. "Nathan's one of the best spin bowlers in the world, so I think he can bowl in any conditions. He's probably been the glue to our bowling line-up over the last few years. And then I probably see Greeny [Cameron Green] coming back and bowling a lot more, he obviously hasn't bowled for 12 months, so that probably hurts the chances of four quicks as well." Lyon has been an almost ever-present in the Test attack for more than a decade and is Australia's third-greatest Test wicket-taker of all time, with 553 scalps. However, he did find himself on the periphery in the previous home series against India, where he featured sparingly with the ball and only managed nine wickets across the five Tests. In comparison, Boland finished the series with the second-most wickets (21 @ 13.19 ) for Australia - just four behind Cummins (25 @ 21.36 ). And that was despite playing two fewer Tests than the skipper. And Boland expects the quicks will once again have a massive say during the Ashes, against the aggressive 'Bazball' approach of England's batters. Liverpool 2025-26 Premier League season preview: Can they dominate again?
The reigning Premier League champions are ready to retain their crown. Head coach Arne Slot's debut season could not have gone any better as Liverpool cruised to the title, and now expectations have risen. With big money spent to refresh a squad that is still being added to, they will hope to hold off the stronger challenges expected from the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City. Advertisement It will be an emotional campaign following the death of Diogo Jota, with tributes continuing before the season opener against Bournemouth. The Athletic looked ahead to the upcoming campaign. Given the money spent this summer, the aim is for Liverpool to replicate their success in the Premier League last season and defend their title. Slot has consistently spoken about winning titles since he arrived last year, and he will maintain those standards, as will the experienced players in the squad including Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah. There may be some growing pains early on as the new signings bed in — there were four new starters in the Community Shield — and their business is not done yet. New weapons that the head coach spoke about at the end of the season have been added and there is trust that Slot will be able to integrate them quickly. The biggest focus for improvement will be progressing further in the Champions League. Liverpool dominated the group phase, finishing top, but were unfortunate to draw eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16. That tie came at a time when Liverpool were running out of steam, and the hope is the versatile squad that has been built will be in better condition at that stage of the campaign. It has been a different transfer window as a lot of new faces have arrived, and plenty of money has been spent. Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili arrived a year after a deal was agreed with Valencia and he has been joined by full-backs Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz and striker Hugo Ekitike for a combined total of just under £300million. Experienced Freddie Woodman and youngster Armin Pesci have also strengthened the goalkeeper ranks. To offset the summer spend, Liverpool have also said goodbye to Luis Diaz (Bayern Munich) and Darwin Nunez (Al Hilal), while Caoimhin Kelleher (Brentford), Jarell Quansah (Bayer Leverkusen) and Tyler Morton (Lyon) have also departed for healthy fees. They also banked £8.4m from the sale of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid a month before his contract officially expired. Have you heard of some fella called Alexander Isak? It's been a quiet summer for him to be fair… Liverpool remain interested in striking a deal for the Newcastle United forward, who The Athletic revealed has no intention of playing for them again. Yet there remains no resolution due to the hefty £150m valuation and Newcastle's struggles to recruit a striker themselves. Slot's side are also short at centre-back with only three senior players at his disposal. Talks have been held with Crystal Palace for captain Marc Guehi and 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni from Parma. Winning teams develop a winning formula and often stick to it to try and replicate success. While Liverpool's overarching principles will remain the same, Slot is eager to not stand still and we will see tweaks to the system he implemented so successfully last season. The summer signings emphasise that with two attacking full-backs, a creative No 10 in Wirtz and a No 9 whose skillset is a combination of what Diaz, Nunez and Jota provided in that role. Build-up play will be different and their attacking patterns will have more variety. New first-team coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be expected to bring fresh ideas after he replaced the popular John Heitinga, who became Ajax's head coach. Despite Liverpool's wealth of talent, 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha stole the headlines. The winger was a joy to watch, scoring three goals and providing two assists to accompany his direct dribbling and quick feet. His performances have elevated him into the first team picture and he is expected to get opportunities this season. Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo have looked sharp, while the four new outfield signings show glimpses of their quality. Slot's side were an attacking juggernaut last season scoring 86 goals during the Premier League campaign, 14 more than anybody else. This season they could be even better. The arrivals of Wirtz and Ekitike could raise Liverpool's attack further. If Salah can come close to replicating his form from last season, and with Wirtz pulling the strings from central areas, they could better their previous goal tally. Full-backs Kerkez and Frimpong are also both attack-minded and further dimensions and unpredictability to Liverpool's attack. Not a lot… but there are concerns about the balance of the side. Liverpool have been susceptible to the counter-attack throughout pre-season and kept only one clean sheet — in a friendly against Championship side Stoke City. The ease with which Crystal Palace played through the middle of Liverpool in the build-up to their two goals offered in the Community Shield was a final warning sign that they need to return to the compact structure that was pivotal to their title win last season. There is also a depth issue in attack and defence, but there is time to resolve that. Slot has been encouraged by his team's attacking threat and creativity during the pre-season, but he has pointed out that there are defensive improvements required. 'I think in the whole pre-season we saw that we are able to create more and we are more comfortable on the ball, we create more opportunities, chances, we dominate maybe even more,' he told reporters following the Crystal Palace defeat. 'But the other side is also true, that we have conceded four against Milan, one against the Japanese team (Yokohama F. Marinos), two against (Athletic Club) Bilbao and again two today.' Nothing is impossible in football. Therefore nothing can ever be 100 per cent, but Slot remaining in his role is about as close to it as you can get. He has so much credit in the bank that even if things do not go smoothly this season, Liverpool's trust will remain. So we'll say 99.999999999 per cent. Wirtz wins PFA Premier League Player of the Season. It would require a Liverpool title win, but Wirtz is an incredible talent and his qualities will be key to the attempts to retain the title.
