2026 Mazda CX-5: How Does the New CX-5 Compare with the Old One?

Mazda is introducing a new CX-5 for 2026, and we're comparing the new version with the old one.
The 2026 CX-5 is longer than before and promises more interior space.
The optional turbocharged engine is no longer available, but there is a hybrid model coming in 2027.
The Mazda CX-5 compact SUV has been around for well over a decade, and it's receiving its second major update for the 2026 model year. The latest generation of this popular crossover boasts some significant changes compared with the outgoing model, so we're detailing the differences, which include a larger footprint, a revised powertrain lineup, styling changes, and new technology features.
The CX-5 Gets Stretched
Mazda says it stretched the new 2026 CX-5's wheelbase by three inches and its overall length by 4.5 inches compared with the old model. It's also 0.5 inch wider than before. This should pay dividends in both rear-seat space and cargo room, though we don't yet have detailed specifications for either of these measurements. Mazda claims that rear-seat legroom, knee room, and headroom are increased, and the door openings are larger. The rear cargo floor is two inches longer and one inch deeper, with a lower liftover height that should make it easier to load heavy items.

No More Turbo Engine, Hybrid Coming Soon
Sadly, for 2026, Mazda is no longer offering our favorite powertrain option for the CX-5, the turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four. This optional engine produced 256 horsepower in the previous CX-5, but now the only choice is the 187-hp naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four. The transmission remains a six-speed automatic, and all-wheel drive is standard. If you want the turbo engine in a Mazda compact SUV, the similarly sized CX-50 will still offer that powertrain combo for the time being.
Later, Mazda will add a hybrid version of the CX-5 that will use a new in-house-developed hybrid system. It hasn't released specifications on this setup, but we think it's safe to assume that it will be more powerful than the 2.5-liter four

The 2026 CX-5 looks different on the outside, with more modern-looking headlights and taillights, plus new wheel designs. Its overall shape is similar, though the longer proportions are noticeable. The interior makeover includes larger screens, including a standard 12.9-inch touchscreen and an optional 15.6-inch touchscreen in the center of the dashboard, and more luxurious-looking materials. The previous car's rotary control knob in the center console is also gone, as the screen is now operated only via touch inputs.
Mazda hasn't yet detailed most of the 2026 CX-5's new features nor any of its trim levels, but we expect it to offer a similar lineup as the current car, which ranges from the 2.5 S base model up to the fully loaded Signature. Pricing will be released closer to the 2026 model's on-sale date, and we expect it to rise somewhat from the current CX-5's $30,265 base price.

The Porsche 944 offers a much more conventional driving experience than a 911, but it's still great. This 944 is from the first year for the Turbo and has some tasteful options. It also has exceptionally low mileage. For decades, the Porsche 944 suffered simply from not being a 911. Why would you get Stuttgart's front-engine, four-cylinder sports car if you could afford the rear-engine, flat-six icon? Well, with air-cooled 911 values now shot to the moon, many Porsche fans have taken another look at the 944. Bring a Trailer This 1986 944 Turbo up for sale on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos) is a prime example of Porsche's transaxle era. It has just 35K miles on the odometer and boasts the desirable 16-inch Fuchs wheels, sport seats, not to mention eighties-tastic features like pop-up headlights and a boost gauge. Bring a Trailer And despite its little-brother status, a naturally-aspirated 944 was crowned champion in a 1984 Car and Driver shootout to find the best handling imported car, beating a 911 and a Porsche 928, as well as a Ferrari, a Lotus, and several others. Testers had few complaints, other than Don Sherman pointing out that the tested 944 could do with the added support of the sport seats. Well, this one has them. Bring a Trailer It also comes with forced induction grunt for its 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, good for 217 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque. That power gets to the ground through a five-speed manual, the gearbox mounted in the rear—again, this is a transaxle machine—for better weight balance. With a curb weight of around 2800 pounds, this 944 has roughly the same power-to-weight ratio as a modern Toyota GR86, more than enough to carve up a back road. However, with a bit of turbo lag to manage, and more torque on tap, the Porsche has a bit more character. It's an accessible performance classic, and great fun to drive. Bring a Trailer Change out the tires (with a date code of 2010, it's probably time for something fresh and sticky), and change the timing belt (again, based on age), and this 944 Turbo is ready to go. Overlooked for decades, these cars have aged like a fine Württemberg riesling. The 944 should always have received the respect it does today. This example has just enough wear on it that you won't feel bad about driving it, and the silver-over-black combination is perfect for shrugging off the miles. Spool up that turbo and hit your favorite piece of wriggling tarmac. A 944 might not drive like a 911. It might actually be better. The auction ends on August 7. Is There Such a Thing as an 'Indestructible' Wheel? Tesla Owners Can Find Out

New wheels from the aftermarket company Unplugged Performance, which caters to Tesla owners, are claimed to be indestructible. The claim is a bit far-fetched, but the Road Warrior wheels appear to be tough and well-designed. Priced between $2795 and $2995, they're also relatively light and don't add much to aerodynamic drag. If you want to market your product to Tesla owners, you're going to need to make a claim that stands out. Thus, aftermarket outfit Unplugged Performance doesn't just say that its latest set of forged alloy wheels for the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are tough—it's claiming the wheels are literally indestructible. This claim is backed up by the company's guarantee of free replacement for life if a wheel should be bent or cracked. Think of Darn Tough, the Vermont manufacturer of heavy-duty socks. Those socks, made in the United States, are guaranteed for life, warranted for replacement should they wear out. On one hand, you're buying a corporate promise, but they really are decent socks. These wheels also look to be a solid product. Phillip Awad | Car and Driver 2026 Tesla Model Y Juniper with 20-inch Road Warrior wheels. At $2795 for a set of 19-inch wheels and $2995 for 20s, the Road Warrior wheels are reasonably priced for forged aluminum. Load rated at over 2000 pounds per wheel, they're theoretically stronger than many wheels used in actual rally racing, and those cars are expected to survive jumps, not just potholes. Also, at a claimed 23.5 pounds per wheel for the 19-inch application and 26.0 pounds for the 20s, they aren't adding a bunch of unsprung weight. Perhaps more important for an EV application, the increased aerodynamic drag is claimed to be minimal, with Unplugged Performance claiming that the coefficient of drag with its wheels is within roughly 4 percent of the most slippery 18-inch factory wheels. The Road Warrior wheels also fit Tesla's factory tire sizes and come with a built-in, replaceable curb protector. Unplugged Performance Tesla Model 3 with Road Warrior wheels. The marketing release for the Road Warrior wheels comes with a bunch of copy about how these "indestructible" wheels will be ideal for ride-share drivers and owners of fleets of robotaxis, with wheels that will never have to be replaced. While it all sounds pretty hyperbolic, the company has designed these wheels based on learnings from the beatings its wheels have taken on municipal Tesla police fleets. These wheels do look tough, well-designed, reasonably priced, and light enough to be a decent upgrade for a privately owned Tesla. The built-in curb rash protectors are a lot less garish than the plastic aftermarket offerings more commonly available, although at $80 for a replacement set of two, you're going to want to pay some attention while parking. Which you should be doing anyway. Making bold claims and not following up on them is, unfortunately, a winning corporate strategy in 2025. Slightly exaggerating but putting out a solid product?
