Arab Children: Nurturing cultural identity and leadership
Fostering Arab heritage
The session reflects the great interest APC places in instilling and consolidating the concepts of Arab cultural identity in children's minds, and in fostering pride in the cultural and value-based heritage of Arab countries. This will instil a sense of belonging and enhance pride in language, history, and culture, contributing to building generations capable of defending their values and identity in the face of accelerating challenges.
Empowering Arab children
The session will be held under the generous patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and with the support and follow-up of His Excellency Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States. This reflects the shared Arab commitment to empowering Arab children to perform their dialogue and expressive roles within an effective institutional environment.
The session will be chaired by Elias Al Maani, President of APC in the Sultanate of Oman, in a move that affirms the principle of empowering children and motivating them to assume leadership roles that enhance their skills and open up horizons for them to think, discuss, and present visions and proposals on issues that affect their reality and aspirations.
Cultural identity of the Arab child
His Excellency Ayman Othman Al Barout, Secretary-General of APC, emphasised that the Cultural Identity Session comes at an important time when the emerging generations need to reconnect with their rich Arab culture and open up to the world while adhering to their roots and authenticity.
Al Barout stated that the Parliament has been keen to ensure that its sessions provide a free and responsible platform for the children of the Arab world, where they can express their visions and participate in building their future with confidence and determination.
Al Barout added that holding this session in the Emirate of Sharjah, the Arab Capital of Culture, under the generous patronage of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, is a source of pride and honour, embodying the UAE's vision to support and empower children at the Arab and international levels.
APC, A unique platform unifying Arab children
Al Barout pointed out that APC engagement through this session is important in consolidating its presence as a unique Arab platform that brings together Arab children within an institutional dialogue and development framework. This platform fosters the values of participation, expression of opinion, and respect for others through accompanying cultural and training programmes that accompany the sessions and open up horizons for interaction with the most prominent issues of concern to children in the Arab world.

Syria's massive wildfires brought under control after 10 days
Some of Syria's worst wildfires in years have been brought under control as of Sunday, according to the Civil Defense and the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management, following days of grueling firefighting in the forested countryside of the coastal Latakia province. The blazes, which started 10 days ago and swept through the heavily wooded area of several mountain ranges, were fanned by strong winds, scorching summer heat and unexploded ordnance left behind from the country's 13-year civil war. Firefighters faced hazardous conditions with support from aerial teams and engineering units working to open firebreaks in the dense terrain. In a statement, the Civil Defense said the spread of the fire was halted on Sunday morning, following 'extensive efforts by firefighting teams and both helicopter and glider aircraft.' Crews remain on the ground conducting cooling operations and monitoring the area to prevent new flare-ups, it added. The Syrian Civil Defence team and volunteers work to extinguish a wildfire, in Latakia countryside, Syria, Sunday. Reuters More than 15,000 hectares of forest were burned, according to Abed Al-Kafi Kayal, a civil defense team leader. 'There are no injuries among residents,' he told The Associated Press. 'Some firefighters were hurt, mostly from slipping, road conditions or the intensity of the flames.' Firefighting helicopters swept low over ridgelines on Saturday, dumping water onto hotspots as ground crews worked below to contain flare-ups. Among the pilots were defectors who had left the Syrian Air Force in 2012 during the uprising against President Bashar Assad. Now, some have rejoined under the new government and are contributing to the emergency effort. Col. Ameen Al-Ameen, who returned to service after 14 years, said his team has been flying 'day and night' for 10 consecutive days. 'We are extinguishing fires and doing our duty toward our country and people, who need us after this long period,' he said. By Saturday evening, teams had successfully contained hotspots on all fronts. The civil defense statement praised the 'tremendous efforts' of Syrian firefighters along with Turkish and Arab support teams, and noted that roads and fire lines were being cut through the forest to help prevent future spread. Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management Raed Al-Saleh said the firefighting efforts had reached a 'promising stage' by Saturday night. 'The scene is changing, the smoke is clearing and teams continue working intensively to extinguish remaining hotspots,' he said. The United Nations also stepped in to support the emergency response. UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria, Adam Abdelmoula, announced on Thursday the allocation of $625,000 from the Syria Humanitarian Fund to assist those affected. Associated Press
