HCLTech growth outpaces TCS, Infy, but tempers FY26 outlook on macro challenges
HCLTech, India's third-largest information technology services company, reported $13.84 billion in revenue for the year ended March, up 4.3% year-on-year. Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS), the country's largest information technology (IT) firm, and second-largest Infosys Ltd reported a yearly revenue growth of 3.78% and 3.85%, respectively. In contrast, fourth-largest Wipro saw its full-year revenue decline 2.7% year-on-year.
Much like peers TCS, Infosys and Wipro, the Noida-based IT services provider is eyeing a stormy start to FY26 due to macroeconomic concerns, even as it guided for a 5% growth at best in constant currency terms, which does not take into account currency fluctuations. HCLTech guided for a tempered start to the new fiscal as it outlined revenue growth of between 2% and 5%, which is also its slowest projection on the lower end since March 2020.
'We believe discretionary spending will continue to be subdued in this environment. Geopolitical factors like tariff and de-globalization are expected to impact IT services,' said C. Vijayakumar, chief executive of HCLTech, as part of his prepared remarks in the company's post-earnings press conference on Tuesday.
'In the coming months, it will be an important topic to observe and monitor the ongoing development,' added Vijayakumar.
Much of this concern stems from macroeconomic uncertainty spurred by US president Donald Trump's tariff flipflops.
With this, each of the country's top four IT services companies has guided for a slow start to FY26. The company's performance and commentary echo those of its larger three peers that said that clients had slowed decision-making and paused projects owing to the hazy macroeconomic environment.
While TCS does not give guidance, Infosys projected a flat to 3% revenue growth for FY26 in constant currency terms, its weakest guidance since April 2009, when it had projected a revenue decline of 6.7-3.1% for FY10.
Smaller peer Wipro also expects to grow its revenue at its slowest pace in the April-June period of FY26. The company has already outlined a quarterly revenue decline between 3.5% and 1.5% in constant currency terms. Wipro gives guidance for the following quarter, whereas Infosys gives guidance for the full year. TCS does not give quarterly or yearly growth guidance.
Much of HCLTech's revenue growth came from telecom and media companies, which accounted for 92% of the company's incremental revenue. Together, telecom, media, publishing and entertainment companies fetch 12.6% of the company's overall revenue.
A bright spot in its report card was on its net profit front. HCLTech reported $2.04 billion in net income for the full year, a jump of 7.65% on a yearly basis. With this, the company outperformed analyst expectations on both revenue and net profit fronts.
In terms of operating margins, the company's profitability expanded by 10 basis points to 18.3%. This was in line with Infosys and Wipro, both of which widened their margins by 40 basis points and 100 basis points, respectively.
A basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point.
Much of this increase in profitability was on account of the company's software products arm, the company's most margin-accretive business unit. The software business's profitability rose 200 basis points to 26.6% in FY25.
HCLTech is one of the few large IT outsourcers that has a sizable reliance on selling and licensing revenue of software products. The company's revenue from its software business rose 3.3% to $1.43 billion but still, the bigger impact of this arm is on the company's operating margins.
The company's revenue in the fourth quarter (January-March 2025) fell 1% sequentially to $3.5 billion whereas net profit declined 8.8% to $496 million. Much of the decline in revenue was due to lesser business from manufacturers, its second-largest client bucket.
Still, at least one analyst said this was in line with expectations.
'HCLT's Q4FY25 results are broadly in line with Street expectations with a 0.8% QoQ cc revenue decline, supported by lower seasonal drop in the products business which also supports inline EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) margins at 18%,' said Manik Taneja, executive director at Axis Capital.
The company's employee count fell by 4,061 to 223,420 people, making HCLTech the only company in the top four to reduce its headcount. Peers TCS, Infosys and Wipro added headcount in FY25.
HCLTech's shrinking headcount, coupled with uncertain demand, signals a cautious hiring outlook, while the accelerating adoption of generative artificial intellgence raises fundamental questions about the future of the IT workforce in general.
For now, the management has refrained from calling out a hiring target, stating that hiring in FY26 would be more than FY25 and also that it would be conducted on a quarterly basis.

PixxelSpace-led consortium to make country's first commercial earth observation constellation
A private consortium of four space start-ups led by Bengaluru-based PixxelSpace has won a bid to build and run the country's fully-indigenous commercial earth observation satellite constellation, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) said Tuesday. According to the agreement, the consortium will invest Rs 1,200 crore over next five years to set up the 12-satellite constellation. It will own, manufacture, launch, develop ground infrastructure, operate the satellite constellation as well as commercialise the data generated. 'By generating high-resolution, indigenous satellite data, the initiative will significantly reduce India's reliance on foreign sources, ensure data sovereignty, and position the country among the global leaders,' said IN-SPACe. The bid for partnership with the government — which will provide technical and policy support — was won by the consortium of PixxelSpace, Piersight Space, Satsure Analytics India, and Dhruva Space, at the financial stage. At least two other consortiums, led by Astra Microwave Products and GalaxEye Space, had also been shortlisted after a technical evaluation. The satellites will be equipped with panchromatic, multispectral, hyperspectral, and microwave SAR sensors — which can produce images of the Earth in varying degrees of detail. The data would be used in the fields of agriculture, infrastructure development and urban planning, disaster management, security, as well as climate change monitoring. '(This) demonstrates the capability and confidence of Indian companies to lead large-scale, technologically advanced, and commercially viable space missions that serve both national and global markets,' said Dr Pawan Goenka, IN-SPACe Chairman. The constellation will be deployed in a phased manner over four years to ensure continuous service upgrades and expanded coverage. Once the constellation becomes operational, it will be among the most advanced earth observation systems in the world. 'We are grateful to IN-SPACe and the Government of India for trusting our consortium with this historic mission. Together with our partners Satsure, Dhruva and PierSight, we look forward to building world-class space-tech capabilities that serve the whole planet from Indian soil. This is India's moment to lead the world in space-powered solutions,' said Awais Ahmed, CEO of PixxelSpace.

Cenovus Said to Be in Talks With Indigenous Groups for MEG Bid
(Bloomberg) -- Cenovus Energy Inc. is in talks with Indigenous groups in Canada to jointly buy MEG Energy Corp., an oil sands producer that faces an unsolicited $4 billion takeover bid from a Canadian oil tycoon. A group of First Nations and Metis communities including Chipewyan Prairie First Nation and Heart Lake First Nation are in talks with Cenovus about taking a C$2 billion ($1.45 billion) stake in MEG, according to people familiar with the discussions. The Indigenous stake would be backed by financial support from the federal and provincial governments, while Cenovus would bid for the rest, the people said. A joint offer for MEG could be made as early as September, though talks may fall apart. Emails and calls to Cenovus weren't returned, nor were calls to First Nations groups involved. MEG didn't immediately respond. Natural Resources Canada declined to comment in an email. The Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corp., which helps finance investments, didn't respond to an email seeking comment. The deal, if successful, would mark the first large, direct Indigenous stake purchase in an oil sands producer. It would also unite two Calgary-based companies with significant operations in the oil-rich region of northeastern Alberta. MEG's Christina Lake project includes 200 square kilometres (77 square miles) of leases in the area, and the company has regulatory approvals to produce around 210,000 barrels a day. MEG was put into play in May when Strathcona Resources Ltd. made an unsolicited cash-and-stock bid that valued MEG at about C$6 billion. Strathcona, controlled by former investment banker Adam Waterous, made the bid after taking a 9.2% stake in the company. MEG's board advised shareholders to reject Strathcona's bid, calling it inadequate. The board also started a strategic review that may include finding other offers. MEG traded at C$25.85 a share at 11:45 a.m. in Toronto on Tuesday. That's above the C$23.27 offer from Strathcona, signalling investors are expecting a higher bid. Alberta's First Nations have increasingly sought ownership of large energy-related infrastructure projects such as pipelines and tank storage farms to earn revenue. Canadian energy companies have been partnering more frequently with the communities whose land is affected by their projects in a bid to head off potential environmental and legal opposition. Cenovus, the third-largest Canadian crude producer by market value, has operations in the Christina Lake region near the MEG site. The company produced the equivalent of about 800,000 barrels a day last year — mostly bitumen, along with natural gas liquids and some conventional oil and natural gas. The Financial Post reported last month that Cenovus is preparing a bid. More stories like this are available on

'Trials get dragged for years in India ...': Another AI crash victim's kin moves US court; seeks info from the black-box
NEW DELHI: Son of a Ahmadabad plane crash victim has moved US federal court against aircraft manufacturing company Boeing and sought "raw details of information from the black-box. " Hir Prajapati, son of victim Kalpana Ben Prajapati said that he filed the suit in US for an early verdict and cases in India get dragged for years. "We have hired Mike Andrews. We expect the raw details of information from the black-box to come before us at the earliest so that we can make further decisions regarding the next course of steps, along with our lawyer," Hir said. "In India, trials get dragged for years. We are fighting the case in the US so that a decision is pronounced early. We believe we will get justice. When the incident happened, the Govt helped us a lot. Police too helped us. We are thankful to the doctors too who handed over the bodies to us after a swift DNA mother, Kalpana Ben Prajapati, died in the accident. I had initially booked a 9th June flight for her but she had fast and she told me that she cannot travel that day. So, I then rescheduled it to 11th June. But she told me that she doesn't want to travel on an odd date. So, I finally booked a ticket for 12th June," he added Meanwhile, prominent US-based law firm Beasley Allen will represent at least 65 families from India and the US whose relatives died in the AI-171 plane crash in Ahmedabad. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do you have a mouse? Play Game Undo The law firm's aviation attorney and the lead lawyer for the AI-171 crash, Mike Andrews, is on a visit to India to meet families. He visited the plane crash site in Ahmedabad. Talking to media persons, Andrews said that the families he met in the UK and India expressed a burning desire for answers, transparency, and information. Andrews said that the legal options available to the family will primarily be based on what data shows and what the investigation reveals. "We visited the crash site and spoke with some of the individuals who were there. We were able to take some photographs and get a feeling of the size of the scene," said Andrews. The Boeing 787-8 plane en route to London from Ahmedabad crashed into a medical hostel shortly after take-off, killing 241 out of 242 people onboard and 19 on the ground. Andrews said that the data will give them an idea of which entity may or may not be responsible for the crash. He added that if Boeing is found to be responsible for this crash, the cases will be filed in the Federal court in the US. When asked about reports of a pilot error being responsible for the incident, Andrews said that more often than not, pilots who are deceased are the ones who are blamed. He added that in other incidents where the planes landed safely, the pilots were not blamed because those pilots can still speak for themselves. Andrews said that previous crashes taught us that the rush to reach a judgement on any crash is premature and speculative. "We need to wait to get all of the data," he said.
