Bangladeshi national who entered TN illegally in 2001 voted in three polls, held
According to police sources, Sayan crossed the India-Bangladesh border by foot in 2001 and initially worked as a tailor in Chennai. He later married Geetha, daughter of a retired sub-inspector, and settled in Tiruppur.
Sayan purchased three cents of land in Karaipudur in his wife's name in 2017 and took a loan of Rs 43 lakh from a private finance firm to build a four-storey building, which he rented out, police said. The case came to light on April 30 when the finance firm sealed the building for defaulting on EMI payments. Based on a complaint, the district police and intelligence agencies launched an inquiry.
'During the inquiry, it was revealed that Sayan had entered the country illegally and had procured a PAN card, Aadhaar, driving licence, and a voter ID. He obtained a passport in 2019 and visited Bangladesh three times. He even voted in three elections,' said a senior official.
Although Sayan has been married to an Indian citizen, he was arrested for illegal entry and is currently lodged in Puzhal prison. He may apply for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status following deportation. 'Preliminary inquiry shows he has no links with any banned organisation,' said Tiruppur SP Yadav Girish.

Pregnant ‘Bangladeshi' woman held after she escapes custody from hospital: Mumbai Police
The Mumbai Police Monday arrested a 20-year-old woman who was nabbed during a crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and later had fled a hospital. The woman, Rubina Shaikh, who is five months pregnant, had fled the JJ hospital where she was taken for treatment on August 14. She was nabbed from Navi Mumbai and placed under arrest on Monday. Rais Shaikh, senior inspector of JJ Marg police station ,where an FIR was registered for fleeing police custody, said that the team got details of where the woman resided and places where she went to work. 'For three days the team disguised themselves at these places and got information about her. Eventually with technical intelligence we had information that she was to come to place in Ghansoli,' the officer said. The officer said that they laid a trap at Navghar Ali Road in Ghansoli where she was expected at her friend's residence. Accordingly, on Monday as the woman reached the spot, they detained her and placed her under arrest. She was produced before the court and sent to judicial custody. The woman had earlier been arrested by the Vashi police station while conducting a drive against illegal Bangladeshi nationals. Since there is only one prison for women in Byculla, the woman was sent there till the time procedures were underway to deport her. She was brought to JJ Hospital for treatment on August 14 for treatment. Around 11 am, she had escaped from the legal custody of JJ Hospital.

Odisha to begin SIR from September, wrap it up by January 7: Election official
Odisha will start working on the special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls from next month, the first such exercise in the state after 2002, the state's chief electoral officer R Sant Gopalan said on Monday. The SIR will start from next month and the revsied list would be out in January, Odisha chief electoral officer R Sant Gopalan said Gopalan said the final voter list would be published on January 7 next year. 'The SIR will start from next month and the revsied list would be out in January. The revised list can be delayed as per ECI directions,' he said. The state's top election official also said the number of polling booths across the state would be increased from 38,000 to 45,000. Since 2002 when the last such exercise was carried out, the electoral rolls have undergone annual summary revisions, which do not involve door-to-door verification. The upcoming SIR could be a crucial effort to ensure that no eligible voter is left out, and no ineligible person remains on the rolls, he said. The SIR process includes house-to-house visits, verification of voter eligibility, rationalisation of polling stations and strengthening of the voter list to eliminate inaccuracies. Monday's announcement comes against the backdrop of a continuing controversy in Bihar over the exercise ahead of state elections later this year. The SIR in Bihar, also undertaken state-wide for the first time in two decades, has excluded nearly 6.5 million names from the draft roll published on August 1. The exercise was also challenged in the Supreme Court in July. On August 14, the top court directed EC to publish details of about 6.5 million voters deleted during the SIR. The court also stressed that transparency was essential and set August 19 as the deadline for compliance, with a review due on August 22. According to the 2024 list of voters, Odisha has 33.2 million voters, including 16.8 million men and 16.3 million women. Among the voters, there are 680,000 senior citizens, 9,060 people, aged over 100 years, 457,000 persons with disabilities (PwD) voters, 754,000 voters aged 18-19 years and 3,380 third gender voters. According to EC directions, people whose names were not recorded in the 2002 electoral roll will have to submit documents prescribed by the Commission to establish their eligibility for voter enrolment. In the Bihar case, the Supreme Court told EC to accept Aadhaar card as well. The state government has already instructed all departments and district collectors to ensure that no post designated as district election officer (DEO), electoral registration officer (ERO), or assistant electoral registration officer (AERO) is vacant during the revision period. No transfers of officers holding these posts would be made without the prior approval of the Election Commission. Asked about the objections raised by BJD on polling number mismatch in 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, Sant Gopalan said replies have already been given to objections raised by the Congress and the BJD. 'Let us not shake public trust. Baseless allegations could undermine the credibility of the Election Commission,' he said, adding that detailed clarifications were provided twice to BJD on their allegations.

Shubhanshu Shukla meets PM Modi; gifts tri-colour that travelled to space
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (August 18, 2025) met Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who became the first Indian astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS). Mr. Shukla, who was part of the Axiom-4 commercial mission to the ISS from June 25-July 15, met the Prime Minister at his Lok Kalyan Marg residence. Mr. Modi welcomed Mr. Shukla, who was wearing an ISRO astronaut's jacket, with a warm hug and walked with him with his arm on the astronaut's shoulder. Mr. Shukla gifted the Prime Minister the mission patch of the Axiom-4 mission and the Indian tricolour that he had taken with him to the ISS. This Indian tricolour was fluttering in the background on the ISS when Mr. Shukla interacted with Modi on June 29. "Had a great interaction with Shubhanshu Shukla. We discussed a wide range of subjects including his experiences in space, progress in science & technology as well as India's ambitious Gaganyaan mission. India is proud of his feat," Mr. Modi said in a post on X. The Lucknow-born astronaut was also seen showing pictures he had taken from the ISS on a tablet computer to Prime Minister Modi. Mr. Shukla was part of the Axiom-4 private space mission that lifted off from Florida on June 25 and docked at the International Space Station on June 26. He returned to Earth on 15 July. The Prime Minister interacted with Mr. Shukla on June 29 in the initial days of the Axiom-4 mission that had docked at the ISS. He had also asked the astronaut to document his learning, training and stay at the International Space Station that would help India's future missions, including Gaganyaan. Mr. Shukla returned to India on Sunday (August 17, 2025). In a press interaction earlier this month, Shukla said that he had fulfilled the task entrusted to him by Prime Minister Modi to document every aspect of his mission for the benefit of India's upcoming Gaganyaan programme. "I remember very well the homework given to me by the prime minister. And I completed it very well. I am very excited to come back and share it with you all. I am confident that all that knowledge is going to prove extremely useful and crucial for us, for our own Gaganyaan mission," Mr. Shukla said on August 1. Along with three other astronauts — Peggy Whitson (U.S.), Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski (Poland), and Tibor Kapu (Hungary) -- Shukla conducted over 60 experiments and 20 outreach sessions during the 20-day Axiom-4 mission.
