
I explored the ‘forgotten' European islands just two hours from UK
Sheltering against sheets of sideways rain, we're in the only restaurant on Fugloy, the easternmost island of the forgotten Faroe Islands. Population at last count: 38 or 40, depending on who you ask.
A passing destroyer flying Denmark's colours steers conversation to US takeover threats on nearby Greenland, and the disturbing state of the world.
But in far-flung corners like Fugloy, people focus on what matters: when they can fish, when they can sow, and when they can safely sail off this craggy lump of rock.
Leene, a Danish woman in her 60s who met her husband while working as a teacher on a neighbouring island, returns each summer on a sort of pilgrimage to his homeplace.

The Faroe Islands are only a short flight from the UK. Yet they're miles off the standard traveller's radar.
Chances are, you haven't been. You might struggle to pinpoint them on a map. When I told friends about my upcoming visit, one confused it with Faro, in Portugal. Another asked if 'those were the ones near Egypt'.
Adrift in the swell of the North Atlantic, this 18-piece jigsaw of islands erupts from the ocean about 200 miles north of Scotland and 300 miles southeast of Iceland. It's wild and windswept, and feels both ancient and modern, all at once.
Turf-roofed cottages and wooden churches embroider the vast, treeless moors. Cairn-marked trails weave across barren mountains.
Beneath them, a remarkable network of bridges and road tunnels has linked the seven most populous islands since the 1970s. Hidden within is the world's only underwater roundabout, loomed over by a giant aquamarine jellyfish.
Even the most inaccessible hamlets are now connected, and somehow, phone signal is stronger than it is in London. On the ferry to Fugloy, where I meet half a dozen tradesmen and a few curious gazes, the 5G on my phone never drops.
When the tourist board invited me to come and see what life on the Faroes is like, I'll admit I wasn't exactly fizzing with excitement. It's not somewhere I knew much about, besides the controversial dolphin hunt that makes headlines when it happens a few times each year.
In my ignorance, I dismissed the Faroe Islands as a bleaker version of places I was already familiar with. I'm Irish; I know a thing or two about rain and grass.
Instead, I discovered a fascinating nation with deep ties to the nature that sustains it, a quirky food scene rooted in native ingredients, and a unique approach to tourism that protects the land and local communities.

Part of what sets this rocky outcrop apart is a willingness to do something few places could conceive of: closing to tourists.
The brainchild of a Danish creative agency, the 'Closed for Maintenance' concept shuts the Faroe Islands to general visitors for one weekend each year.
In their place are 100 volunteers who, in exchange for bed, board and a locally-made hat, come to repair footpaths, paint signs and make trails safe for the next tranche of hikers.
The project may only happen once a year (it's already been and gone, in May), but part of the vision for tourism in the Faroes is to find a balance between the well-being of the 54,000 people who call these islands home, and providing a good experience for visitors.
Everywhere I go, signs remind you to 'keep off the grass' and show virðing , the Faroese word for respect.
On the mist-shrouded cliffside of Hvithamar, the Faroes' showstopper viewpoint, the raw beauty of this wild and unspoiled landscape is fully revealed.
Dwarfed by fjords and mountains that stretch into the clouds, I feel like a microscopic crumb in an infinite universe. It's so striking, I wouldn't dream of leaving anything but footprints (on the designated pathways) behind.
In 2015, an economic crisis in the Faroe Islands had a strange effect.
As financial difficulties brought an end to an import craze that had blighted almost every domestic industry, people began to look inwards. Faroese culture entered a renaissance in knitting, in food, and in music.
In Tórshavn, the chocolate box capital that's more small town than city, there are no high street chains or big fast food names. Instead, there's Tutl, an independent record store run by local musicians; Roks, a hip fine dining restaurant that serves things like sea urchin and vanilla-flavoured scallops; and Gudrun & Gudrun, a high-end wool clothing boutique run by two Faroese women.
Like many indigenous languages around the world, the Faroese language is enjoying a revival.
For Lea Kampmann, a young singer-songwriter from Vestmanna who performs in Faroese, it's about identity. 'I write about my experiences, about my grandmother who is no longer with us. Doing it in the language makes me feel connected to who I am and where I come from,' she says.
Life imitates art. In Kirkja, the village where I meet Leene on Fugloy, young relatives of ageing residents are coming for summer. Some are even experimenting with new methods of farming.
'Life is coming back,' she says. 'If it had been up to my generation, we would have turned this place into a ghost town, but now it's different. The young feel the connection.'
At Anna and Óli Rubeksen's elegant house in Velbastadur, I experience Heimablidni , a traditional Faroese supper club in the home of a resident. All over the islands are people who host guests from around the world for dinner, and I'm breaking bread (or in this case, wind-dried mutton) with two of the best.
As Anna prepares a feast of prawns, lamb and honey-roasted potatoes, Óli pours me a gin mixed with Faroese rhubarb liqueur, and we chat about why they do what they do. 'For us, it's about possibilities,' he says. 'If we say no, and we don't welcome people into our home, ok, that's it. End of story. If we say yes, you never know what might come of it, or who you might meet.'
Over a four-course dinner served with locally brewed pilsner, I ask about the backlash to the Grindadrap, the hunt that has led animal rights campaigners to call for a boycott of the islands.
Hundreds of whales and dolphins are slaughtered in Faroese waters each year, with the meat divided among villages. Internationally, it's widely condemned, but in the Faroes, public opinion is divided. Some see it as archaic and inhumane, others as a practice that has been part of the Faroese way of life for centuries.
Anna raises a double standard: if you slaughtered pigs in the open in the UK, people would be talking about it in the same way. But they don't, because it's done behind closed doors.
It's a fair point. Approximately 11 million pigs are killed in the UK each year, according to the RSPCA.
In the taxi from the Rubeksen's to the Hilton Garden Inn, the only international hotel on the islands, I get talking to my driver, Magnus.
He's surprised to hear I made the journey to Fugloy. All told, it's about two-and-a-half hours, by car and then boat. But in 57 years on the Faroes, he's never been.
'Young people are interested, I suppose,' he muses. 'In any case, the young people here are proud of where they come from.' More Trending
They have reason to be. I think of all I have seen in my time on the islands. The breathtaking Múlafossur waterfall, crashing down into a tidal lagoon. The hidden hamlets, where grass-roofed houses sit in the cradle of mighty fjords. The resilience of tiny communities that seem to exist on the edge of the Earth.
In times like these, it's easy to see the appeal of this peace and isolation.
As Leene says, 'here, we only worry about what we can see.'
The world might forget about the Faroes, but these islands know exactly who they are.

Day 1
Arrive at Vagar Airport and rent a car with 62N, a rental company with offices attached to the terminal.
Before heading to the capital, turn left and drive to the village of Gásadalur and its iconic Múlafossur waterfall. After, stop at Bøur, a tiny hamlet with cute turf houses. On a clear day, you'll see the famous view of Tindhólmur & Dranganir.
On to Tórshavn to check in at the Hilton Garden Inn, a comfortable base with an excellent breakfast and decent bar snacks. (Rooms from £98 per night.)
Stroll into town, about a 20-minute walk, and wander the ancient cobbled alleyways.
Have dinner at Roks (it means 'silly' in Faroese).
Day 2
Head to Fugloy, the easternmost of the Faroe Islands. To do this, drive from Tórshavn and head to Hvannasund (up north) and park the car close to the harbour.
Take the ferry (it's a working boat called Ritan) from there. You can buy tickets onboard.
The boat makes three stops, I suggest disembarking at Hattarvík and hiking over the mountain for about an hour to Kirkja, the largest of Fugloy's villages.
Explore this tiny hamlet and stop for lunch at Kalalon, the island's only cafe. It's run by a wonderful woman called Amalja, who has lived on Fugloy her whole life. She doesn't speak English, but someone there will.
Catch the ferry back to your car and head back to Tórshavn for dinner. On the drive, keep an eye out for Múli, an abandoned ghost village.
For grub, I recommend trying Paname Cafe or grabbing takeaway from the popular fish and chips hut, Fisk und Kips.
Day 3
Drive to the mountain village of Funningur and park up, then walk out to Hvithamar, the most iconic view in the Faroe Islands. The hike is moderately challenging and takes about an hour.
Then drive on to Gjógv for a stroll in the village (there is a Guesthouse there called Gjáargarður, if you are hungry for lunch).
After that, swing by Eiði and see the world-famous football pitch and also the beautiful view of The Giant & The Witch.
Head back to Tórshavn around lunchtime and wander the shops, such as Tutl and Gudrun & Gudrun.
Grab an open sandwich at Bitin, a trendy little cafe in the heart of town.
Day 4
Start the day right with a floating sauna experience at Saundadypp, in the town of Runavik.
Enjoy an evening of Heimablidni, the traditional Faroese supper club at the home of a resident. I highly recommend Anna and Óli Rubeksen's house in Velbastadur.

Force the 1% to cough up for their climate damage
Land ownership in Scotland is incredibly concentrated in a small number of hands. Fewer than 500 people own more than half of our private land. This motley group includes our own aristocrats, whose families have owned huge estates for centuries and whose wealth is often a result of their forebears' brutal actions during the Highland Clearances. But in recent decades they've been joined by a new group, the elite of global capitalism. The biggest landowner in Scotland used to be the Duke of Buccleuch, but now it's Danish billionaire Anders Povlsen. And the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum isn't far behind. READ MORE: More Scots need to benefit from Scotland's screen industry, John Swinney says And he might not be in the same league as Povlsen or the Sheikh in terms of hectares, but Scotland's most infamous landowner is undoubtedly Donald Trump. Thankfully, the US president has now returned home after a brief stint of shaking hands, being drowned out by bagpipes and teeing off at his Scottish golf courses. Last year, I proposed a private jet tax which would see Trump and his cronies charged a 'super rate' of up to £250,000 every time they fly here for non-government business. This is something which should be within the powers of the Scottish Government, but is now a decade overdue. In the aftermath of the independence referendum, all parties agreed to devolve air passenger duty to the Scottish Parliament. An Act was passed by MSPs to replace it with a new Scottish air departure tax. But it can't start until the UK Government resolves an issue with the exemption for lifeline island flights – and neither they nor the [[Scottish Government]] seem to be in any rush to do that. If this was resolved, the Scottish Government could immediately bring in a super-tax on private jets, reflecting the fact that they are about twenty times more polluting than regular flights. Personally, I'd rather ban most private air travel. It is the perfect example of how the world's richest 1% are disproportionately responsible for the climate crisis. Unfortunately, full powers over air travel are still reserved to Westminster for now. Trump doesn't care about the climate, but he would care about the £250,000 tax bill every time his huge private plane arrives here. Some super-rich elites would undoubtedly take the financial hit and still fly here anyway, but the money raised could at least then be used to fund climate-friendly policies like cheaper buses and trains. And private air travel is just one example of how the super-rich play by different rules to the rest of us, all whilst avoiding paying their fair share. For too long, they have been allowed to avoid not just paying their fair share in tax, but also having their often deeply damaging activities scrutinised. All while ordinary people suffer the consequences of budgets for schools, hospitals and social care being squeezed. Tax is the price we pay for living in a civilised society, one with public services capable of meeting all of our needs throughout our lives. But the richest among us do not pay nearly enough towards maintaining the services needed for that kind of society. The Scottish Greens have long called for a wealth tax, one which would see the richest 10% of people who hold almost half the total wealth of the country taxed fairly. Introducing just a 1% annual tax on all wealth and assets above £1 million would massively boost the efforts to create a fairer, better Scotland for everyone. For context, the other 90% of Scots households hold nowhere near enough wealth to be considered for such a tax, with the average having about £214,000 in assets. This would be an extremely well-targeted tax, raising billions from those who can more than afford to pay. We are not the only people calling for a wealth tax. Just this week, leading economists from across the world have called on Labour to introduce a UK-wide wealth tax to tackle extreme levels of inequality and poverty. They have warned the Government what the Greens have argued for years: that far too much wealth is concentrated in the hands of far too few people in the UK, and it is damaging society at large. Sadly, Labour seem determined to rule this out. It is time for Keir Starmer to seriously rethink his approach and what he wants his legacy to be: a society where everyone has what they need to get by, or one where far too many children are left in desperate poverty whilst a tiny number of people hoard more wealth than they could spend in a thousand lifetimes. The Scottish Greens are clear on what we need to do: tax the super-rich now, for the good of people and planet.

6 of Dubai's mega-projects that we can't wait for: MGM Island to open in 2028
The Dubai skyline is ever-changing, and it's always a treat to see what the city has in store for us next. Over the last few decades, Dubai has created some world-famous masterpieces, from the Burj Khalifa to Palm Jumeirah. But the best is yet to come – there are some mega projects in the pipeline that you definitely need to know about. Some are still in the planning stages, with others taking a little longer than expected, or changing into something even better. So without further ado, here are Dubai's uncompleted projects that we're seriously excited to see. Al Maktoum International Airport Plans for Al Maktoum International Airport (Credit: Dubai Media Office) First opening in 2010, there are plans to make Al Maktoum International Airport the largest capacity in the world. Beginning with cargo flights only, the first phase of the airport started humbly, but in 2024, the Dubai government confirmed the long-term goals of this major project. As part of the plans for the airport's expansion, Dubai South will become something of an aerotropolis with new neighbourhoods and residential developments in the pipeline. As for the airport itself, eventually it will have capacity for a whopping 260 million passengers annually. The interior of the planned new look for Al Maktoum International Airport (Credit: Dubai Media Office) Plans released in 2025 outline that there will be three key phases in developing the project, which is set to be five times the size of DXB. Eventually, the airport will be home to more than 400 aircraft gates, have five parallel runways, five passenger terminal buildings and an underground train system. Dubai World Islands Dubai World Islands The Dubai World Islands is a pretty cool design. Who wouldn't want to take a trip to Europe that only takes 20 minutes from Dubai? Designed to look like a map of the world, the project first began in 2003, but work paused around 2008. Dormant for some time, the islands saw a surge of life in 2014 when the Kleindienst Group launched the Heart of Europe development. The Anantara World Islands resort then opened in December 2021, making it the first resort to do so on World Islands. The Raining Street can be found in the Heart of Europe (Credit: Supplied) Although not all the islands have been built on, you can visit the Raining Street in the voco Monaco Dubai Hotel. More projects are planned for World Islands, including a Danish-style hygge hotel, a Maldives-inspired Honeymoon Island and the Marbella Resort Hotel. All oozing in luxury, the destination is set to make for a fabulous stay-cay over the coming years. There looks set to be more developments at World Islands in the years to come. Palm Jebel Ali How Palm Jebel Ali should look once completed (Credit: Dubai Media Office) Construction paused on the project for more than 15 years following a break in 2008, which has left the island lying dormant for the better part of two decades. But, last year, it was announced that property developer Nakheel was coming back to the table to breathe new life into the white elephant. While the foundations have been laid, several practical infrastructure developments still need to be completed. The man-made island is twice the size of Palm Jumeirah, but there are no completed projects on it. However, in 2023, plans were revitalised by Nakheel to bring hotels and resorts, beach clubs and even a 'celebration village' to the islands. Futuristic buildings of the Gateway Bridge on Palm Jebel Ali plans The island spans 13.4 kilometres of land with 10.5 million square metres of development and 16 distinctive fronds offering a total of 110 kilometres of coastline and 91 kilometres of beachfront, which will eventually be home to 35,000 families. No specific date has been provided for when work can be expected to be completed, but some real estate developers have provided a handover date of 2027 for property on the island. The Island The Island (Credit: The Island was first announced in 2017, and is still yet to be completed, after originally being rumoured as a home for the first UAE casino. In 2023, it was confirmed that Ras Al Khaimah would instead be home to the UAE's first casino, but the Dubai Vegas-style island will still go ahead without the gaming. Now under construction, the island is being built out into the sea next to Jumeirah, and will boast three iconic hotels, the MGM, Bellagio and Aria. As well as views of the Burj Al Arab and an extended beachfront, guests and visitors will be able to enjoy cafes, restaurants, lagoons and even a huge in-house entertainment venue. An earnings call in July 2025 revealed that the MGM Island project should be open in the second half of 2028. Six Senses Dubai Marina Credit: Select Group Announced in 2024 as the latest addition to Dubai Marina, the tower will be the world's tallest residential building upon completion. The first part of the skeleton structure has already been constructed, and design images of the project have shown the new building standing well above the likes of Marina 101 (425m) and Princess Tower (414m). Expected to have 122 floors and a series of 251 luxury apartments, the building will have a wellness theme, with a crystal sound healing room and a huge 25m lap pool. Credit: Select Group If you're lucky enough to call this place home, residents will benefit from amenities such as its Sleep With Six Senses bedrooms filled with everything wellness, including bespoke features like a wellness wardrobe (yes please) stocked with home fitness equipment and mood-enhancing sensory art. Therme Dubai Therme Dubai is set to be located near One Za'abeel (Credit: Diller Scofido + Renfro) Therme Dubai will feature a massive interactive park, the world's largest indoor botanical garden and three 18-metre waterfalls. The Dhs2 billion project will be built in Zabeel Park, one of the largest parks in Dubai, and is slated to open in 2028. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed described the Therme Dubai as 'an iconic addition to Dubai's skyline.' The project, designed to host 1.7 million visitors every year, will be set over a 500,000 square feet area and have a building height of 100 metres. A study just named this European nation the world's funniest country
Are you a quick wit or a master of irony? Have you got good craic or enough comedic timing to get a laugh even out of the cringiest dad jokes? Chances are that you're a funny person. Humour is both universal and incredibly local. It varies enormously between generations, communities and across cultures, but you can bet every nation has its own comedic identity – even if that means not really having one at all. But, which nation is the funniest? Well, Remitly asked more than 6,000 people from 30 different countries to fill out the Humour Styles Questionnaire, which is a study developed back in 2003 by a guy called Rod Martin. It essentially helps researchers and psychologists understand how humour is used by different people in their day-to-day, not just if they're funny but also how they're funny. Recommended: The best comedy movies of all time, according to Time Out. So, was it the Brits, with their dry use of irony, or the Irish, famous for their good craic, who claimed the crown? The answer is neither – the title of the funniest country in the world was actually awarded to (slapstick drum roll, please) ... Czechia (aka the Czech Republic). Scoring 72.33 out of 100, Czechs apparently excel at self-defeating humour and also, according to the study, rank well for aggressive humour (this includes jokes that come at another person's expense, such as sarcasm or ridicule). Portugal came second with a score of 71.42. The Portuguese are characterised by affiliative humour – that's the kind of funny which is warm and helps people bond – and in a close third place was Ireland, which scored 71.18.
