A study just named this European nation the world's funniest country
Humour is both universal and incredibly local. It varies enormously between generations, communities and across cultures, but you can bet every nation has its own comedic identity – even if that means not really having one at all.
But, which nation is the funniest? Well, Remitly asked more than 6,000 people from 30 different countries to fill out the Humour Styles Questionnaire, which is a study developed back in 2003 by a guy called Rod Martin. It essentially helps researchers and psychologists understand how humour is used by different people in their day-to-day, not just if they're funny but also how they're funny.

So, was it the Brits, with their dry use of irony, or the Irish, famous for their good craic, who claimed the crown? The answer is neither – the title of the funniest country in the world was actually awarded to (slapstick drum roll, please) ... Czechia (aka the Czech Republic).
Scoring 72.33 out of 100, Czechs apparently excel at self-defeating humour and also, according to the study, rank well for aggressive humour (this includes jokes that come at another person's expense, such as sarcasm or ridicule).
Portugal came second with a score of 71.42. The Portuguese are characterised by affiliative humour – that's the kind of funny which is warm and helps people bond – and in a close third place was Ireland, which scored 71.18.

On a random summer night, a bouncer perched outside Bar Snack called out to me and other passersby on the street, luring us with the promise of great drinks, great food and "the best bathroom in the East Village." Reader: I am here to tell you—he was right. But if a disco-fresh bathroom isn't enough to tempt you in, the convivial nature and solid list of tasty cocktails (and snacks!) found at Bar Snack certainly will. The vibe: After surveying the East Village and its many, many (expensive) cocktail bars, bartender Iain Griffiths and Brooklyn-based bar owner Oliver Cleary decided they wanted to create something—and so they did, serving "dressed-up classics for dressed-down people." The inside gives off '70s lounge—think wood paneling and a dark, walnut-wood bar lined with glittery orange bar stools. Snagging a seat during the nighttime hours can prove difficult as this bar certainly attracts a crowd, making standing room your best bet. But even the daytime can bring a rowdy good time, as rock and throwback hits (hello Spice Girls!) blare through the speakers. The food: Snack is in the name, isn't it? And snacks, they do so well. Fried cheese curds are tossed in pickle dust and hot dogs get a little fancy with onion jam and a hot pickle. Even the drinks come with a little something, take the chicken skin chicharron that tips on the side of the Boat Snack Martini ($18). But the snack of all snacks is the Spice Bag ($18). Leaning on Griffith's Irish roots, the bag comes to the table in a white paper bag labeled "Spice Bag" fashioned in the style of the Spice Girls logo. As much as you'll want to save it, you must rip it open to reveal buttermilk-fried tendies, fries and peppers. Drizzle on the orange-y curry sauce and get to eating while its still steaming hot. The drinks: The menu is split up into "Crushers" and "Shooters," plus a dedicated daiquiri section with pitchers and tiny sippers, such as the Snaquiri ($12). The bar improves upon the classics, as the whiskey sour riff, the Split Ends ($18), incorporates raspberry and a smooth topper of Guinness, and the Verte Drip ($117) drinks like a mojito but better, swapping out cloyingly sweet notes with a light coconut float and a bit of matcha for depth. Yet the frozens are most definitely a fave, whether it's beach weather outside or not. The Mama Tried ($16) drinks like a limeaid popsicle but with a touch of smoke, thanks to a blend of triple citrus sorbet, mezcal and St. Germain.

After Time Out Cascais gave you the first scoop on Carminho playing at Festas do Mar 2025, the full lineup for the Portuguese music festival in Cascais has finally landed: from August 28 to September 7, D.A.M.A., Bárbara Bandeira, and the duo António Zambujo & Miguel Araújo will take to the stage by the Bay. Other headliners already announced include Pedro Abrunhosa, Rui Veloso, and Richie Campbell. This year, there's plenty of fresh energy: the main stage, known as Palco Cascais, will host three concerts each night (at 7pm, 8pm, and 10pm) instead of the usual two from previous years. Festas do Mar kicks off on Thursday, August 28, with local artist Latte, followed by HMB and Pedro Abrunhosa. On Friday the 29th, you can catch Duque Província, Carolina de Deus, and Rui Veloso. Saturday the 30th features Filipe Gonçalves, Capitão Fausto, and the duo António Zambujo with Miguel Araújo. The first weekend wraps up on Sunday, August 31st, with Sofia Hoffmann, Vizinhos, and Bárbara Bandeira taking the stage. The following week, on September 4th, Bianca Barros, João Só, and Richie Campbell bring the free party back in full swing. Thursday the 5th is dedicated to fado, kicking off at 6.30pm with Diamantina and Tiago Correia, followed by Isabelinha, Ricardo Ribeiro, and Carminho. Saturday marks the return of D.A.M.A. to Cascais, but before them, catch Charli Elle and Santos & Pecadores. As tradition goes, Festas do Mar conclude on Sunday with the moving procession (on land and at sea) honoring Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes. Later that evening, before the fireworks show, the Cascais Symphony Orchestra promises to perform 'the best of Portuguese music'. Residents, workers, and students of Cascais holding the Viver Cascais card can once again enjoy concerts from a prime spot right by the stage. Just remember to pick up your wristbands (maximum two per cardholder) at the designated kiosk – spaces are limited. More music Festas do Mar also features a second stage set up at the Cidadela for Portuguese music afternoons, starting daily at 6pm. This stage highlights new talents and local artists like Left, Manila, and Hera. Children's entertainment, which last year took place on the main stage, now moves to Jardim Visconde da Luz, with shows featuring various animated characters from Thursday to Saturday at 5pm. And what about food and drinks? Of course! Every concert day, from noon until 1am, you can enjoy dozens of food and craft stalls spread across Praça 5 de Outubro and Passeio D. Luís I.

"When Aaron walked in, and once paired with Catherine, bosses knew they had the perfect partnership to run the soap's iconic pub. "Aaron will bring his Irish charm to the pub, and the chemistry between him and Cath is electric. They are both very happy and loved-up.
