Egypt, Jordan, and Palestinian Authority Reject U.S. Proposal to Resettle Gazans

Daily Tribune28-01-2025
Egypt, Jordan, and the Palestinian Authority have firmly rejected a proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump to resettle residents of the Gaza Strip in Egypt or Jordan. The plan, revealed over the weekend, has sparked widespread condemnation across the region.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a statement reaffirming Egypt's unwavering support for the Palestinian people's right to remain on their land. "The Egyptian government supports the Palestinian people's insistence to remain on their land, defending their legitimate rights and respecting international law," the statement read.
Public sentiment in Egypt remains strongly opposed to any resettlement of Palestinians within its borders. President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi addressed the issue recently, acknowledging the logistical ease of resettling Palestinians in the Sinai Peninsula but emphasizing the immense public opposition to such an idea.
"It would be easy to resettle some Palestinians in the Sinai, but the difficulty lies in getting anyone in Egypt to accept the idea," el-Sissi told a gathering of military officers.
Political experts argue that any move to accept the proposal could create significant unrest in Egypt. Khattar Abou Diab, a political science professor at the University of Paris, noted that while Egypt is grappling with economic challenges and could potentially benefit financially from the deal, public opposition would make its implementation impossible.
Paul Sullivan, a former professor at the American University of Cairo and a fellow at the Atlantic Council, echoed this sentiment. "No Egyptian leader who wants to stay in power would agree to such a request," Sullivan said. "It would destabilize Egypt and likely lead to greater regional instability."
In Jordan, Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi also dismissed Trump's proposal, reaffirming Jordan's stance on the Palestinian issue. 'Palestine is for the Palestinians, and Jordan is for the Jordanians,' Safadi declared. 'The solution to the Palestinian problem is located on Palestinian soil and embodied by a Palestinian state.'
The Palestinian Authority has consistently rejected any solution that undermines the rights of Palestinians to their homeland. With this unified stance, regional leaders have sent a strong message that the resettlement of Palestinians outside their homeland is not a viable option.

Israelis Protest to Demand End of Gaza War and Release of Hostages

On Sunday, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets across Israel, calling for an end to the war in Gaza and the release of hostages still held by militants. The protests come as the Israeli military prepares a new offensive. The unrest follows a decision by Israel's security cabinet to capture Gaza City after 22 months of conflict that have left Palestinian civilians in dire conditions. The war began in October 2023 when Hamas launched a major attack on Israel, taking 251 people hostage. Forty-nine captives remain in Gaza, with 27 reportedly dead. In Tel Aviv, protesters unfurled a giant Israeli flag featuring portraits of the remaining hostages at Hostage Square, a focal point for demonstrations throughout the war. Demonstrators blocked roads, including the highway connecting Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, setting tires on fire and causing traffic disruptions. Protest organizers and the main campaign group representing the families of hostages called for a general strike on Sunday, leading to many businesses in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv closing. 'I think it's time to end the war, release all the hostages, and help Israel recover,' said Doron Wilfand, a tour guide attending a rally in Jerusalem. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum said the protests aim to 'shut down the country today with one clear call: bring back the 50 hostages, end the war.' The group plans to set up a protest tent near the Gaza border, warning that delay could put the hostages' lives at risk. Recent videos from Hamas and Islamic Jihad showing two weak and emaciated captives have raised fears for their safety. Meanwhile, Egypt is mediating talks for a 60-day truce, which could include a hostage release, after previous talks in Qatar failed. Viki Cohen, whose son Nimrod is held in Gaza, addressed him on social media: 'Stay strong, just a little more.' Speaking at a Tel Aviv rally, President Isaac Herzog called for international pressure on Hamas, saying, 'We want them back as soon as possible.'

Israeli Strikes in Gaza Kill at Least 18, Including Civilians Waiting for Aid

Gaza's civil defence agency reported that Israeli strikes and gunfire killed at least 18 Palestinians on Sunday. Seven of the victims were shot while waiting to collect food aid. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that seven people were killed in a drone strike on a hospital courtyard in northern Gaza City. Witnesses said the victims were members of a Hamas unit responsible for distributing aid. Israel has not commented on the incident. Its military is preparing a broader offensive in Gaza City and has recently sent ground forces to the Zeitun neighbourhood. After nearly two years of war, UN-backed experts warn that widespread famine is developing in Gaza. Israel has significantly limited humanitarian aid, and aid convoys have often been looted. Overnight Sunday, witnesses reported Israeli air strikes across the Gaza Strip. Bassal said four people were killed in a strike on a tent sheltering displaced Palestinians in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza. He added that casualties are high in Zeitun, where ground operations have been ongoing, but civil defence teams are struggling to reach those trapped under rubble due to intense bombardment and lack of equipment. Access restrictions and media limitations in Gaza make independent verification of these reports difficult. On Saturday, Israel signaled it might urge civilians to leave Gaza City ahead of a new offensive. The defence ministry said supplies of tents and shelter equipment would resume for civilians moving to southern Gaza. Hamas condemned the announcement as part of a "brutal assault to occupy Gaza City." Bassal reported six people killed by Israeli gunfire near an aid distribution point in southern Gaza, and another killed near an aid site in central Gaza. The current conflict began with Hamas's attack on Israel in October 2023, which killed 1,219 people, mostly civilians. Since then, Israel's offensive has killed more than 61,897 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to Gaza's health ministry, figures considered reliable by the United Nations.
