TGL's $70M Detroit Expansion Team Backed by Lions, Broncos Owners

Yahoo22-05-2025
Detroit Lions owner Sheila Hamp will be a co-owner of the Motor City Golf Club when it joins the Florida-based indoor golf league TGL in 2027. Hamp's son Michael will be the team's governor as one of the principals in Middle West Partners, which leads the new ownership group. Denver Broncos owner Rob Walton will also have owner's suite privileges at SoFi Center. And they won't be alone among NFL affiliates at the highest levels of the tech-infused golf competition.
TGL announced the expansion club Tuesday, saying Detroit will join the six original franchises for the 2027 season. According to a person familiar with the transaction, Motor City paid more than $70 million for a spot in the league, which could see further expansion after its debut season. That's more than double the entry fee for founding teams. A TGL spokesperson declined to comment on the team's expansion price. TGL parent company TMRW Sports was valued at nearly $500 million in a 2024 funding round.

Owners tied to the Baltimore Ravens, Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Kraken, Toronto Maple Leafs and Colorado Rockies were all reportedly spotted at TGL matches in 2025 as big-name sports investors eye the upstart league. Washington Commanders co-owner David Blitzer, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank and New York Mets owner Steve Cohen are among those already invested in teams.
'We really like those team owners that are operators of other sports teams and other professional leagues in their communities,' TMRW Sports founder Mike McCarley said last year.
In recent weeks, expansion speculation has followed news that TGL Holdings filed trademark requests for 'Chicago Links Golf Club' and 'Texas Golf Club' in addition to 'Motor City Golf Club.' A Dallas-based group has reportedly put up $77 million to land a team.

TGL has also considered adding women to its competition—and possibly opening a West Coast playing venue as well. L.A. Golf Club owner Alexis Ohanian said in April that he expects the team to achieve profitability in year two.
The Motor City ownership group also includes technology entrepreneur Kal Somani, co-owner of the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League; Ronin Capital Partners, led by Jay Farner, former CEO of Rocket Companies; and sports investment firm RHC Group. A PGA Tour event sponsored by Rocket Mortgage has been held at Detroit Golf Club in Michigan since 2019. Middle West Partners didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
Michael Hamp's grandfather, William Clay Ford Sr.—himself the grandson of Henry Ford—purchased the Detroit Lions in 1964 for $6 million.

Scottie Scheffler rallies to win BMW Championship for 5th victory of the year

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The numbers Scottie Scheffler is compiling have been drawing comparisons with Tiger Woods. The world's No. 1 player had a Tiger-like moment with the trophy on the line and a club in his hand Sunday in the BMW Championship. His 82-foot chip on the 17th — the hardest hole in the final round at Caves Valley — landed about 60 feet short and rolled the rest of the way, picking up speed, losing speed dropping on the final turn. The birdie all but wrapped up another win, his fifth PGA Tour title this year. It was reminiscent of Woods delivering magic to overshadow his sublime skill, his chip-in from behind the 16th green at the Memorial, his chip-in for eagle in the World Cup in Japan. Scheffler already had erased a four-shot deficit against hard-luck Robert MacIntyre in five holes. He was clinging to a one-shot lead on the 17th, a daunting par 3 with a back right pin and water right. Scheffler was in the left rough, the safe spot, facing a shot that a dozen players had chipped over the green. 'I knew it was just going to be really fast, and do my best to get it down there and give myself a good look for par,' he said. 'When it came out, it came out how we wanted to and then it started breaking and it started looking better and better. 'And yeah, it was definitely nice to see that one go in.' Scheffler closed with a 3-under 67 for a two-shot victory and became the first player since Woods — there's that name again — in 2006 and 2007 to win at least five times on the PGA Tour in consecutive years. MacIntyre didn't make a birdie until the 16th hole but stayed in the game after losing his big lead, mostly when Scheffler began missing short putts. MacIntyre pulled within one shot of the lead going to the 17th when Scheffler worked his magic and had to settle for another runner-up finish to a memorable shot, just like he did at Oakmont when J.J. Spaun holed a 65-foot birdie putt to clinch the U.S. Open. MacIntyre was in the scoring room when he watched Spaun and applauded it. He was alongside Scheffler at the BMW Championship, staring in disbelief but angry at his poor play off the tee that cost him the big lead early. 'When he's pitched that in on 17 and then he's hit the perfect tee shot on 18, it's pretty much game over just then. You're playing for second place at that point,' MacIntyre said. 'He's the better player on the day. I'm just really pissed off right now,' he said. 'Right now I want go and smash up my golf clubs, to be honest with you.' MacIntyre made 18 birdies in the first 45 holes of the tournament and only two over the last 27 holes. He closed with a 73 and got some consolation prizes that didn't mean much in the moment. He cracked the top 10 in the world for the first time, going to No. 8. Scheffler's chip-in elicited the loudest cheer of the day. The most satisfying shot came on the 15th, when his lead was down to one shot after a three-putt. MacIntyre from the fairway hit into 7 feet. Scheffler was in a deep bunker and hit 8-iron to 6 feet. MacIntyre missed. Scheffler made. 'That was a really important shot in the tournament, one that I think will fly a little bit under the radar,' he said. The season is not over for Scheffler, who leads the 30 players who advanced to the Tour Championship at East Lake with a chance to become the first repeat FedEx Cup champion since the series began in 2007. All 30 players at East Lake can win the $10 million first-place check. The field includes Harry Hall, the only player who played his way into the top 30 on Sunday, and even that was tense. Hall made bogey on the par-5 16th — the easiest hole on the course — and then went long and left at the 17th. He also chipped in for birdie and was safe going up the 18th. Rickie Fowler was on the verge of getting back to East Lake only to twice miss the green from the fairway on the back nine, leading to bogey on the 14th and double bogey on the 15th, and knocked him out of the top 30. Fowler finished with a 5-foot par putt — had he missed, Michael Kim would have been in the Tour Championship. Instead, the 30th spot went to Akshay Bhatia, despite making four bogeys on the back nine and feeling as though he had blown it. MacIntyre squandered a big chance, too. He showed plenty of grit on Saturday playing in the final group with Scheffler. But on the opening hole, Scheffler drilled his drive down the middle and hit to 6 feet for birdie, while MacIntyre missed the fairway and a 6-foot par putt. It was an early statement. MacIntyre missed another fairway at the second and made bogey. He went from the fairway to a bunker on the short par-4 fifth, a two-shot swing when the Scotsman failed to get up-and-down for par and Scheffler made birdie. And then Scheffler took the lead with a wedge to 6 feet for birdie on No. 7. It looked like it would be a runaway at that point as Scheffler never seemed to miss — except when he had a chance to extend the lead. He missed birdie chances of 5 feet at No. 8 and 8 feet at No. 10. He botched a simple up-and-down at the 12th and three-putted from 18 feet on the 14th. Each chance kept MacIntyre in the hunt. And then came one chip on the 17th, a knockout punch.

Modi's tax overhaul to strain finances but boost image amid US trade tensions

By Nikunj Ohri, Aftab Ahmed and Aditya Kalra NEW DELHI (Reuters) -Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's deepest tax cuts in eight years will strain government revenues but are winning praise from businesses and political pundits who say they will bolster his image in an ongoing trade fight with Washington. In the biggest tax overhaul since 2017, Modi's government on Saturday announced sweeping changes to the complex goods and services tax (GST) regime which will make daily essentials and electronics cheaper from October, helping consumers and also companies like Nestle, Samsung and LG Electronics. At the same time, in his Independence Day speech on Friday, Modi urged Indians to use more goods made domestically, echoing calls from many of his supporters to boycott U.S. products after Donald Trump hiked tariffs on imports from India to 50% as of August 27. The tax cut plan comes with costs given GST is a major revenue generator. IDFC First Bank says the cuts will boost India's GDP by 0.6 percentage points over 12 months but will cost the state and federal government $20 billion annually. But it will improve weak stock market sentiment and bring political dividends for Modi ahead of a critical state election in the eastern state of Bihar, said Rasheed Kidwai, a fellow at New Delhi-based Observer Research Foundation. "GST reduction will impact everyone, unlike cuts to income tax, which is paid by only 3%-4% of the population. Modi is doing this as he is under a lot of pressure due to U.S. policies," said Kidwai. "The move will also help the stock market, which is now politically important as it has a lot of retail investors." India launched the major tax system in 2017 that subsumed local state taxes into the new, nationwide GST to unify its economy for the first time. But the biggest tax reform since India's independence faced criticism for its complex design that taxes products and services under four slabs - 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Last year, India said caramel popcorn would be taxed at 18% but the salted category at 5%, triggering criticism about a glaring example of GST's complexities. Under the new system, India will abolish the 28% slab - which includes cars and electronics - and move nearly all of the items under the 12% category to the lower 5% slab, benefitting many more consumer items and packaged foods. Government data shows the 28% and 12% tax slabs together garner 16% of India's annual GST revenue of roughly $250 billion last fiscal year. 'A BRIGHTER GIFT' AND POLITICS Bihar is a key state politically and goes to the polls by November. A recent survey by the VoteVibe agency showed Modi's opposition has an edge largely because of a lack of jobs. "Any tax cut has wide public appreciation. But of course, the timing is purely determined by political exigencies," said Dilip Cherian, a communications consultant and co-founder of Indian public relations firm Perfect Relations. "It seems to be an indication of some mixture of frustration as well as recognition that there is a broad public pushback against high and crippling rates of taxation." Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has seized on his tax announcement, posting on X that on the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, "a brighter gift of simpler taxes and more savings is waiting for every Indian." Modi has vowed to protect farmers, fishermen and cattlemen, following Trump's surprise tariff announcement on India, after trade talks between New Delhi and Washington collapsed over disagreement on opening India's vast farm and dairy sectors and stopping Russian oil purchases. The latest round of trade talks between the two nations set for August 25-29 has also been called off. Inter Milan Still Monitoring Parma Breakout Star – But Face Price Tag & Liverpool Obstacles

Inter Milan are still monitoring Parma defender Giovanni Leoni, but face major obstacles from the price tag and the competition of Liverpool. This according to today's print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. Inter Milan have been eyeing up Parma defender Giovanni Leoni for some time. The Nerazzurri had already tried to sign the teenager from Sampdoria last summer. However, Parma beat them to his signature. And after a season in Serie A with Parma, Leoni has convinced Inter all the more. Inter Still Monitoring Giovanni Leoni – But Face Liverpool Obstacle UDINE, ITALY – MARCH 01: Giovanni Leoni of Parma reacts at the end of the Serie A match between Udinese and Parma at Stadio Friuli on March 01, 2025 in Udine, Italy. (Photo by) Parma have given Inter an asking price of around €40 million for Leoni. That has proven tricky for the Nerazzurri. Particularly considering that they have already invested significantly this summer, and are still pursuing a deal for Atalanta's Ademola Lookman. Meanwhile, Liverpool have also been working to try and sign Leoni. And the Premier League champions would certainly be formidable competition for Inter. Particularly on a financial level, where they have not encountered any problems. Therefore, Inter are still looking at Leoni. But they are well aware that they face an uphill battle to try and sign the 19-year-old.
