‘Scary': Stage invader grabs Katy Perry at Sydney concert

News.com.au2 days ago

Touring superstar Katy Perry was left momentarily stunned during her Sydney concert on Monday night, when a fan stormed the stage and managed to grab ahold of the star before eventually being tackled by security.
Perry, who is in Australia performing a string of arena dates as part of her Lifetimes tour, was onstage at Sydney's Qudos Bank Arena on Monday night when the security scare happened.
She was standing on one of the circular catwalks in front of the show's stage that jut out onto the arena floor, allowing her to get closer to fans.
Perry was mid-song, stood at her microphone stand with guitar in hand, when an excited fan bounded onto the stage and threw an arm around her.
Perry couldn't hide her shock but still barely missed a beat, continuing with the song she was midway through – the 2008 smash Hot N' Cold – while stepping to one side and waiting for security to take care of the incident.
Within seconds, two men dressed in black were also on stage, bundling the fan off in the opposite direction.
'There's never going to be another show like this, so just enjoy it!' Perry instructed the audience, as a team of four men now bundled the fan offstage and into the crowd – and presumably, to the nearest exit.
Seconds later, Perry was back at the mic stand, unflappably launching into the song's next chorus.
The star herself is yet to speak out about the security scare on social media, but the hapless fan's 'scary' antics haven't gone down well among the rest of her fanbase.
Some on X wondered whether the incident was 'staged,' with one person commenting that 'if it's real, that's seriously worrying.'
'If you rush the stage mid performance, don't cry when security handles you. Actions have consequences,' another scolded.
Another voiced their concerns that it appears to be 'actually really dangerous and ridiculous that she is so easily attainable.'
Perry's Lifetimes tour continues with one more show in Sydney tonight, before moving to Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide for the rest of June.
While Perry's latest album 143 and its accompanying singles didn't set the charts alight, she's still a touring force to be reckoned with, booking 15 arena shows across the country for the Australian leg of her tour.

Aussie celeb couple's ‘heartbreaking' baby update

Australian actress and model Erin McNaught and her partner, music producer Stace Cadet, have today revealed they've been dealt a challenging hand since the birth of their son Obi in October last year. McNaught, 43, and Stace – real name Stasi Kotaras – announced that following a 'rapid decline' in their young son's 'behaviour and happiness' in recent weeks, doctors have informed them that nine-month-old Obi has a 'large brain tumour' on the right side of his brain. The crushing diagnosis came after the couple noticed their son was having problems eating, sleeping 'and most recently, keeping his head straight.' They wrote that a neurosurgeon delivered the 'heartbreaking' diagnosis on Tuesday evening, and shared a photo of their young son's brain scan. 'We are absolutely shattered and the last few days have been our hardest days. Our team at the Queensland Children's Hospital have been incredible and we remain hopeful that we can remove the mass and get Obi healthy and happy, pending the results,' they wrote. 'We have a long and difficult road ahead us but are so lucky to have our family and friends' support at this time and we're keeping focused on getting our little boy back.' Fans and celeb friends have flooded the couple's post with messages of support – among them, McNaught's ex-husband and father to her two older children, British rapper Example. 'You got this,' Example wrote under the post. 'Big love team. Obi will be a fighter like his parents,' said tennis player Dylan Alcott. 'Oh no — this is heartbreaking. Sending so much hope & strength,' wrote Dani Reilly, former Bloc contestant who last year lost her first child with husband Dan at just 10 days old.

Hobby trainer Craig Cousins in pursuit of Stradbroke glory with The Inflictor

Craig Cousins has got the speech ready, he's got the new suit and he's got the horse. Now all the larrikin truck driver and hobby trainer has to do is win the thing. We are talking about the $3m Stradbroke Handicap. The Stradbroke, first run in 1890, has had its share of colourful and quirky stories but never before has it seen anything quite like Cousins. The 60-year-old only has three horses in work but one of them, home bred hero The Inflictor, has qualified for The Star Stradbroke. It has meant that Cousins has taken the week off his full-time job as a truck driver to enjoy everything the grandest week in Queensland racing has to offer. 'I have gone and bought a suit, I've bought some ties and I am thinking about the Stradbroke all the time,' Cousins said. 'I do little things in my mind, even when I'm driving the truck, and I've rehearsed what my victory speech is going to be if we win.' Cousins was born in Tasmania to a racing family and his much-loved Dad Des, who passed away on Caulfield Cup day nine years ago, was also a small-time trainer. Mum Carmel, now 90, hasn't been enjoying the best of health but she loves her racing and is determined to get to Eagle Farm if she can on Saturday to witness her boy's big Stradbroke moment. The Inflictor, to be ridden by young gun female jockey Cejay Graham, won a golden ticket into the Stradbroke when winning The Gateway last December. Ever since, Cousins has been plotting a path to Stradbroke glory. But they are busy days as he not only has to worry about The Inflictor and his other horses, but also keep focused on his day job of driving a truck. 'I work for a company called DMK Forest Products and I deliver particle board, plywood and other things to carpenters and shop fitters and joiners,' Cousins said. 'Every day I get up at about 3.15am and I do all the stuff that needs to be done at the stables before I take the horses to the track to do their work. 'My work rider jumps on my horses about 4.45am, then I leave for home about 5.30am. 'I get home by 6am and then I might have a shower and a shave and a coffee and then I head to work and do an eight-hour day. 'I can drive the truck anywhere from up to Gympie, to down to the Gold Coast, to out west to Toowoomba. 'Depending on what my workload is, I'm pretty bloody tired by the end of the week. 'I often find myself thinking about my horses when I'm driving the truck.' One of Cousins' earliest Stradbroke memories was when the great Daybreak Lover won the prestigious race in 1986. Now The Inflictor, a four-year-old gelding which is the son of 2016 Stradbroke winner Under The Louvre, gets an extraordinary chance to join some greats of the turf on the Stradbroke honour roll. The Inflictor is owned by a syndicate managed by Kurt Turner, the eldest son of the late trainer and breeder Ken 'Tubby' Turner. For two decades, Cousins managed a bowls club in Brisbane and he says that even if he won Queensland racing's greatest prize it wouldn't change his life. He would still return to work driving trucks next week and has no plans to expand his small team of horses. 'Dad passed away on Caulfield Cup day nine years ago, but he would be over the moon with me having a Stradbroke horse,' Cousins said. 'The two things that Dad taught me with horses are that if you can't feed them the best feed, don't have them. 'And he also said to make sure I looked after their feet and their teeth. 'This horse was wandering around cattle yards for a while as a young horse, but even then he was a good horse to handle. 'It will be a great thrill if he wins the Stradbroke, but it won't change things too much for me. 'I'm too old to suddenly start training more horses and if you do that, you have to start employing people and there's a lot of obligations. 'At the moment, I'm a one-man band with my training operation and that's the way it will stay. 'If I want to go to the footy or something, I might get a friend to give my horses some water and feed and clean up their poo, but basically I do 99 per cent of everything myself.'

Aldi's Best of British range returns to stores once again

Aldi has delighted fans this week by reviving one of its most popular ranges — and shoppers are flocking to their local supermarket to get their hands on it. The supermarket giant brought back its Best Of British Special Buys range on June 12, featuring beloved snacks and drinks from the UK. It's no secret why the collection is so popular, with 1.1 million Brits living in Australia as of June 2023. This year's range includes items such as Tunnock's Tea Cakes, with a six pack selling for $5.49. There are also Smith's Crinkle Cut chips in Prawn Cocktail, Worcestershire sauce or Cheese & Pickles flavours for $3.29. Fry's Chocolate Cream or Orange Cream, Swizzels Squashies and Fray Bentos Steak & Kidney Pie also made the cut. Fans are already all over the product drop, with one social media video clocking more than 900,000 views just revealing some of the items available. Emma Lake took to TikTok to share the information with her 'fellow Brits in Aus'. 'It is British week at Aldi. This is one of my favourite weeks of the year, where you can stock up on all of the goodies,' she said. 'So they've got all different crisps, chocolates, all different sauces, gravies. Honestly, they had so much in store. This is the first day.' She did say she noticed some things were missing — such as Toffee Crisps and Mini Cheddars. She also commented that pricing wasn't too bad. Alisha Carter also called it the 'best week of the year' and said she was heading in-store with a strict mission — to find Prawn Cocktail crisps and Galaxy chocolate. 'But, we'll see what else they have,' she said. 'I have no self restraint when it comes to chocolate so going in here I knew I only wanted to get the Galaxy bars but Caramilk Buttons are like my weakness. The same with these little miniatures. 'Chicken and mushroom pot noodles were also on my to get list but I could not justify paying $3.50 when these are a pound in England.' She said the goods were 'secured' but would likely only last two weeks in her household before having to go back for more. Other fans weighed in on the range, with some saying there weren't enough Irish products and others demanded to know why there weren't any Percy Pigs (IYKYK). 'I'm so picking up Swizzels tomorrow!!! Aussie partner has never had any of them before,' one said. Another asked: 'But is the Yorkshire tea the ACTUAL Yorkshire tea?!? Because the stuff in Woolies/coles isn't proper stuff!' 'That's all well and good but let me know when they've got Gregg's steak bakes,' one added. An Aldi spokesperson told the supermarket chain has been stoked with positive the reaction. 'We have welcomed back our popular British Week range to the Special Buys aisle this week, and we're chuffed to see videos of our customers raving about this year's range online. For those missing home favourites or are British food-curious, it's the time to head over to the middle aisle,' the spokesperson said. 'Fan favourites like Prawn Cocktail and Worcestershire sauce crisps, Galaxy Chocolate Blocks and nostalgic Club Biscuits have made a return as well as some new products that are sure to be a hit, like the Swizzels Squashies.'
