
Philips cuts annual profit outlook on potential impact from US tariffs
KUALA LUMPUR: Dutch healthcare technology company Philips on Tuesday cut its profit margin forecast for 2025, citing a net impact from US tariffs of between 250 and 300 million euros (US$283 million-US$340 million) despite "substantial tariff mitigations."
The United States is Philips' largest market, accounting for about 40 per cent of its projected 2024 sales and one-third of its tax contributions. The company imports various products from China, including Respironics breathing masks, electrical shavers, toothbrushes, and other devices, while sourcing medical equipment from Europe.
"In an uncertain macro environment that has intensified due to the potential impact of tariffs, we are focused on what we can control," CEO Roy Jakobs said in a statement.
The company cut its full-year core profit outlook, despite posting first-quarter sales slightly above expectations.
Philips now expects its adjusted earnings before interest, tax and amortisation (EBITA) margin to come in a range between 10.8 per cent and 11.3 per cent, down from previous forecast of 11.8 per cent-12.3 per cent.
While the rates and timing of tariffs on the health sector remain unclear, analysts anticipate that companies will likely have to absorb any near-term costs if these tariffs are imposed.
Washington has launched an investigation into the pharma industry, laying the groundwork for possible levies.
Philips, which makes consumer electronics, appliances and medical equipment, paid 38 million euros in U.S. custom duties last year, according to a February report.
The report said the group would mitigate the impact of tariffs including through relief measures and the so-called Nairobi Protocol, which exempts from tariffs some devices used to treat chronic conditions.
The Dutch company reaffirmed its forecast for comparable sales growth of between 1 per cent and 3 per cent this year, after reporting a smaller-than-expected sales decline in the quarter. A strong performance in North America helped offset a decline in China.
Sales for the quarter ended March 31 were 4.10 billion euros, down 2 per cent year-on-year in comparable terms, but exceeding analysts' average forecast of 4.02 billion euros, according to a company-provided consensus.

US pressures NATO to seal deal on ramping up defence spending
BRUSSELS: US defence chief Pete Hegseth on Thursday pushed NATO to agree a deal on increasing military spending that could satisfy President Donald Trump at a summit this month. The volatile US leader has demanded that alliance members boost defence budgets to five percent of their GDP at the June 24-25 meeting in the Netherlands. NATO chief Mark Rutte has put forward a compromise agreement for 3.5 percent of GDP on core military spending by 2032, and 1.5 percent on broader security-related areas such as infrastructure. Several diplomats say Rutte looks on track to secure the deal for the summit in The Hague as NATO grapples with the threat from Russia after more than three years of war in Ukraine. But a few allies are still hesitant about committing to such levels of spending. 'The reason I'm here is to make sure every country in NATO understands every shoulder has to be to the plough, every country has to contribute at that level of five percent,' Hegseth said at a meeting with his NATO counterparts in Brussels. 'Our message is going to continue to be clear. It's deterrence and peace through strength, but it can't be reliance. It cannot and will not be reliance on America in a world of a lot of threats,' he said. Most vocal in its reluctance is Spain, which is only set to reach NATO's current target of two percent of GDP by the end of this year. Diplomats say other countries are also haggling over making the timeline longer and dropping a demand for core defence spending to increase by 0.2 percentage points each year. But the deal appears an acceptable compromise to most, which will allow Trump to claim that he has achieved his headline demand, while in reality setting the bar lower for struggling European allies. The United States has backed Rutte's plan, but Washington insists it wants to each country to lay out a 'credible path' to meet the target. Germany needs more troops In a connected move, NATO ministers were due to sign off at their meeting on new capability targets for the weaponry needed to deter Russia. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius estimated the new requirements meant Berlin would need to add 'around 50,000 to 60,000' more soldiers to its army. His Dutch counterpart Ruben Brekelmans said reaching the level requested would cost the Netherlands at least 3.5 percent of GDP. It is not just the fear of Moscow that is pushing Europe to ramp up its ambitions -- there is also uncertainty over the United States' commitment to the continent. 'What we will decide in The Hague, what we will spend on defence going forward, the new defence investment plan, of course, is rooted in what we need in terms of the hard capabilities,' Rutte said. Hegseth, a former TV presenter, rocked NATO on his last visit in February with a fiery warning that Washington could look to scale back its forces in Europe to focus on China. Since then, there has been no concrete announcement from the United States on troop withdrawals, but NATO allies remain on tenterhooks. Ukraine question With NATO looking set for the defence spending deal, another thorny issue threatening to overshadow the summit in three weeks' time is what to do about Ukraine. Trump's return to the White House ripped up Washington's support for Ukraine and upended the West's approach to Russia's three-year-long war. Hegseth underscored the US disengagement with Kyiv by skipping a meeting of Ukraine's backers in Brussels on Wednesday. Kyiv's European allies are pressing to overcome US reluctance and invite Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky to The Hague as a sign of support. So far, NATO has said only that Ukraine will be represented at the gathering, and has not confirmed that Zelensky will be in attendance.

Dutch car sharing firm adds Renault EVs capable of powering local grid

Vehicle-to-grid technology, known as V2G, allows electric vehicles to store power and provide it to the electricity grid at times of peak demand. The technology has been available for several years but only recently became commercially viable after the introduction of smart charging technology and batteries able to sustain intensive usage. The rollout by MyWheels will be the largest V2G car-sharing scheme in Europe and the largest addition of V2G-enabled cars in the region. It follows growing concern about grid stability after a major blackout in Spain and Portugal this year, and sabotage to power supply in southern France during this year's Cannes film festival, which have triggered more interest in a technology that can help balance fluctuating supply and demand, said Kees Koolen, an investor in We Drive Solar, the Dutch producer of the special chargers used in the project. 'It feels like we're at a tipping point,' said Koolen, who estimated that the project in the Dutch city of Utrecht has cost around 100 million euros ($114 million) to develop. The global V2G market was worth $3.4 billion in 2024, according to Global Market Insights, and is expected to grow by 38% annually between 2025 and 2034 to reach $80 billion. The Netherlands is an early adopter of V2G technology due to ambitious plans to electrify its transport and heating systems while also moving to renewables. Japan's Nissan has also recently supplied dozens of V2G-enabled Leaf and Ariya modelsto France and Spain. MyWheels says 500 of Renault's V2G-compatible cars, including its electric R5, will be on the road by next year. When not driving, the cars will be plugged intoWe Drive Solar's bidirectional chargers and the scheme's operators will be paid for electricity absorbed and sold to the grid. Grids have become increasingly unstable with growing electrification and as more intermittent renewable energy is fed into the system. 'Our research shows that vehicle-to-grid technology could allow the growing electric vehicle fleet to become a significant asset to the grid, with vast storage potential locked up in electric vehicles,' said Madeleine Brolly, advanced transport analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. A key challenge ahead will be standardisation across manufacturers, which will be needed for it to be adopted at scale, she added.
