2025: A year that documented the fall of greats in Tamil cinema

2025, in the history of Tamil cinema, will not only be remembered for its blockbusters but also its spectacular failures. It was a year that began with unprecedented expectations but ended up witnessing the downfall of many industry legends. From Mani Ratnam, Kamal Haasan to Shankar, Suriya, and AR Murugadoss, many celebrated stars and directors faced the wrath of the Rajinikanth's 'Coolie', despite being a money-spinner, was at the receiving end of criticism, mostly aimed at director Lokesh Kanagaraj for his writing. Or the lack of SPECTACULAR STUMBLE: GAME CHANGER THAT DIDN'TShankar, one of India's most celebrated filmmakers, witnessed an epic fall with Ram Charan-starrer 'Game Changer'. The film, which tackles corruption - a recurring topic in his films - was criticised for its poor writing and redundant tropes. The film was supposed to strike gold in theatres during the Sankranti/Pongal holidays. Instead, it was stuck in a cesspool of negative reviews that dissected Shankar's dwindling form since 2015. While Shankar proved his prowess in his career spanning three decades, his last few films have suffered from repetitiveness. Sure, Shankar can mount several hundred crore projects and make use of state-of-the-art technological advancements in his films. But his stories have lacked reinvention, and the negative reviews are proof of that. AR MURUGADOSS AND THE SIKANDAR DISASTERAR Murugadoss was a filmmaker who gifted the Tamil cinema audience some of the greatest films - 'Ramana', 'Ghajini', 'Thuppakki', and many more. This year saw him collaborate with Salman Khan for 'Sikandar'. The star power of Salman Khan and AR Murugadoss's directorial skills, on paper, signalled a promising opening at the box 'Sikandar' was so lifeless that it hardly recovered its total budget in its lifetime. According to trade reports, the Salman Khan-starrer wrapped up its run before it could even touch the Rs 200 crore-mark, a milestone that Salman Khan's films easily surpass, even if the content is DECADE-LONG QUEST FOR A HIT CONTINUESIt has been almost a decade since Suriya tasted monumental success at the box office. Even though most of the films of the past decade boasted brilliant performances, their box office figures tell a different story. This year saw 'Retro', which marked his collaboration with director Karthik Subbaraj. The film's success would have put an end to the 10-year-long 'Retro' failed to impress the audience. The story took us to different places, and so did the screenplay, which meandered more than it should. 'Retro's criticism made Suriya's quest for a big hit wait longer, and now, he has pinned all his hopes on his upcoming film, 'Karuppu', directed by RJ LIFE: WHEN LEGENDS COLLIDE AND CRASHadvertisementOne of the biggest disappointments of 2025 was 'Thug Life', which marked the reunion of the iconic duo - Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan - 38 years after 'Nayakan'. The film raked in approximately Rs 93 crore globally, creating the most devastating blow not just for the makers, but also for fans who believed in it. Despite being a film that carried the weight of Haasan's acting prowess and Ratnam's genius, it crashed and how!'Thug Life's debacle reiterated the emerging problems in Tamil cinema. A few years ago, star power combined with directorial excellence was considered a sure-shot hit formula. But, the film's performance at the box office and its reviews pointed out that times are indeed changing. EVEN RAJINIKANTH'S COOLIE WASN'T SPAREDRajinikanth's films never flop. They always guarantee box office success, irrespective of the content. On August 14, his film, 'Coolie', directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, hit theatres amid unparalleled hype. But, right from its first show, the film has been receiving polarising reactions from critics and audiences alike. No doubt, the film will definitely rake in the moolah. But the polarising opinions were quite uncharacteristic of a Rajinikanth SPECTACLE FILMS ARE FAILING?What made 2025 particularly devastating was not just the failures of tent-pole films but the collapse of what were once established formulas. Back in those days, the director-actor combination and their reunions were just enough. They not only guarantee a grand opening, but also serve as the crowd-pulling factor. But these criticisms and box office flops highlight several issues plaguing Tamil cinema. Take a look:advertisementEvolving audiences' preferences: Over the last decade, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, audiences have been fed up with formulaic approaches. Neither star power nor a monstrous budget with an ensemble cast and crew guarantee triumphs star power: Barring a few big-budget films, it was the small and medium-budget films that outperformed these star vehicles this year. This also suggests a fundamental shift in what audiences are seeking these of pan-Indian films: After the Covid-19 pandemic, there was increasing pressure among directors and the film industry to create pan-Indian content. This desire dilutes authenticity, which once made regional cinema and OTT takeover: The rising production costs and the star salaries, too, contribute to these box office failures as they take up a significant portion of the budget. After the OTT takeover, the shortened theatrical windows also affected the audience turnout in LIES AHEAD: REINVENTION OR CRISIS?With just four months to go for 2026, Kollywood is at a crossroads. For an industry to flourish, big-budget spectacle films should also succeed, so that it enables films of smaller/medium budgets to be made. In 2025 (so far), this balance was off by so many no, the question isn't whether these celebrated artistes and technicians can bounce back - they have proved themselves and all it takes is one script that will strike gold. But, the real question that looms over Tamil cinema is whether the industry and audiences are ready to embrace a new paradigm shift where content trumps stardom, authenticity trumps grandeur, and box office collections are not the only yardstick to measure success.2025 is the year that documented the fall of the giants, but it could just be a temporary setback. If filmmakers fail to reinvent and rediscover the soul of Tamil cinema, then Kollywood might face a content crisis like Bollywood. Will Tamil cinema analyse the changing trends and make corrections? Only time will tell.- EndsMust Watch

Jyotika's hardcore workout routine at 46 puts strength training and endurance front and centre: Watch

Jyotika Saravanan, at the age of 46, sweated it out at the gym with intense, high-impact workouts. A clip showing her in action at the gym, capturing a wide variety of exercises, surfaced on social media. All the exercises captured in the video were hardcore, requiring not just strength but also stamina to keep up. Jyothika's workout included all types, from HIIT to strength endurance.(PC: IG/@tamil_cinema_update_007) What all exercises was she doing? Jyotika spared no effort, proving that age is not a barrier to pushing forward and challenging oneself. Her workout was well-rounded, and the actor gave it her all as she endured a variety of training styles. It included cardio, HIIT, strength training, core work, and strength endurance- basically a full-body workout routine. Some of the workouts included the use of various gym equipment, from dumbbells and ropes to an intense sledge push. In fact, even otherwise regular exercises, whether sit-ups, lunges, or planks, were done with added weights, showcasing that her routines leaned heavily towards strength training, even when targeting the core with exercises like planks. In other words, she cranked up the difficulty of each move by incorporating elements of strength or endurance. For example, instead of the standard stair-climbing machine (stairmaster), she hopped up actual stairs, turning a simple movement into a high-impact, power-driven drill, proving that her fitness game is absolutely fierce. On her work front Jyotika was last seen in the Netflix series Dabba Cartel in February this year. As an actor-producer, her most recent production was the Tamil movie Retro in May. Last year, she starred alongside Ajay Devgn and R. Madhavan in Shaitaan. ALSO READ: Jyotika talks about her return to Hindi after 25 years; playing diverse roles: 'There's absolute growth'

Pooja Hegde breaks the mould

Many actresses who start their journey in South Indian cinema and later move to Bollywood often paint the South industry in a negative light. They accept glamorous roles during their prime, but once they gain traction in Bollywood, they claim the South failed to recognize their talent, dismissing the roles they once embraced as mere glamour doll parts. Pooja Hegde, however, has taken an entirely different stand, earning praise for her honesty. Though she began her career in Bollywood, it was Telugu and Tamil cinema that gave her the most substantial roles and memorable hits. In a recent interview, Pooja candidly admitted that Bollywood never offered her strong, performance-driven characters, often casting her solely for glamour appeal. She revealed that most of her Hindi film roles lacked depth and were far from memorable. In contrast, she lauded South cinema for giving her well-crafted, challenging roles that allowed her to showcase her acting skills. She cited her recent Tamil film Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, as a prime example, calling her character 'brilliantly designed' and creatively fulfilling. Pooja also reflected on her notable Telugu projects such as Aravinda Sametha and Radhe Shyam, where she played characters with emotional depth and significant scope for performance. She contrasted these with her Bollywood portfolio, pointing out that apart from her debut Mohenjo Daro, most roles offered in Hindi cinema were purely glamour-focused. Her refreshing acknowledgment of South Indian cinema's value stands out in an industry where many tend to favor Bollywood narratives, making her remarks a breath of fresh air for regional film fans.
