Owners of pet lion arrested after it jumped a wall and attacked a woman and two children in Pakistan
The woman and her two young children, aged 5 and 7, were taken to hospital, after being attacked in an alleyway when the lion escaped from a farmhouse in the neighborhood of Johan town on Thursday.
Security camera footage released by police showed the lion leaping over a concrete wall and pouncing on a woman from behind, knocking her to the ground. A man can be seen running out of the property the lion escaped from with an object in hand and chasing the lion away from the woman, before the wild cat takes off further down the road where the children were attacked.
They sustained injuries to their faces and arms but are now in stable condition, according to the Associated Press news agency.
Lahore police said in a video posted to social media that the lion had escaped from an open cage at the farmhouse and that it was recaptured by the owners, who promptly put it in a vehicle and went into hiding in another district.
Muhammad Faisal Kamran, Deputy Inspector General of Lahore Police Operations, said three people were arrested on Friday morning. 'We've also captured the lion and transferred it to Wildlife authorities,' Kamran said.
Lahore police shared an image of three men in a police cell and video of the lion in a cage.
Local media reported that the owner did not have a license to keep the lion and would be prosecuted under the Wildlife Act, meaning they could face a maximum prison term of seven years or a fine equating to $17,500. CNN has sought confirmation from the Punjab Wildlife and Parks department.
Owning wild cats as pets is seen as a status symbol in Pakistan and is not uncommon, but a license is required, and large cats must be kept outside city limits.
'This unfortunate incident highlights how wild animals are often kept in such places without a license, or permission — with no legal procedures followed — endangering the lives of many people,' Kamran said.
The Punjab government announced Sunday that it was undertaking a province-wide crackdown on those keeping lions without a license. So far, 13 lions have been captured and five individuals arrested in connection with violating wildlife regulations.

Colonial Downs Stewards Suspend Francisco Arrieta For 15 Days For 'Extremely Careless' Ride
Colonial Downs Stewards Suspend Francisco Arrieta For 15 Days For 'Extremely Careless' Ride originally appeared on Paulick Report. Francisco Arrieta, the jockey aboard the horse that shut off the mount of Tyler Conner, who suffered a serious spinal injury in a spill at Colonial Downs on July 24, has been suspended 15 days by track stewards, BloodHorse reports. Arrieta's suspension, announced Saturday, will be served Aug 2-16. The stewards in their ruling described Arrieta's actions as "extremely careless." Conner and his mount Stanza were improving position while leaving the far turn in the Race 7 when they were shut off by Arrieta aboard Montador, according to the Equibase chart. Stanza clipped heels, stumbled, and fell, injuring Conner. Montador went on to win the race but was disqualified and placed last. The New Kent, Va. track canceled the remainder of the July 24 card. Conner suffered a broken nose and a fractured C1 vertebra, the first vertebra under the skull. He is in intensive care at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. His girlfriend, Lucy Houle, told the publication he has been able to walk. To read the complete story at click here. Calls for road safety improvements along busy Brampton route
A CALL for road safety improvements along a busy residential Brampton road was made at a meeting this week. Members of Cumberland Council's highways and transport strategic board met at Allerdale House in Workington on Thursday (July 24) where Colin Lindsay, From Paving Brow in Brampton, was given the opportunity to speak. He said the road had become busier over the past 25 years, with the route used by HGVs, but pedestrians were forced to walk on the carriageway as there were no pavements or verges. Mr Lindsay said tests had shown the average speed by motorists using the road was 35 mph and there were a number of blind bends where accidents had occurred in the past – including one incident where a car went through a hedge. He added: 'Regretfully, from previous discussion with the police several years ago, they declined to send officers as the road was deemed to be too hazardous.' According to the report, which was discussed after the public participation part of the meeting, it was recommended that the board noted that the issue of speeding by traffic proceeding in a north-easterly direction on Paving Brow, Brampton, was being passed on to the police for enforcement. In addition, it was recommended that members agreed to investigations taking place into the feasibility of providing a smaller pedestrian warning sign suitable for mounting on a lighting column at the Paving Brow/Tarn Road junction end of Paving Brow and members agreed both recommendations. Mr Lindsay was told by a council officer that there were two collisions along the road in the last five years but it was unknown whether excess speed was a contributing factor. In a statement from councillor Mike Mitchelson (Brampton, Conservative), which was read out as he was unable to attend the meeting, he said that he supported the concerns over pedestrian safety and he would also support extra safety measures to be introduced. Councillor Roger Dobson (Corby and Hayton, Lib Dems) highway safety was the number one concern for one of the council's community panels and he would support the 20mph speed limit for the road which cllr Mitchelson was calling for. Councillor Barbara Cannon, (St Michaels, Labour) the financial planning and assets portfolio holder, wondered if other measures such as rumble strips could be installed? She was told that rumble strips could disturb patients being transported in ambulances to a nearby cottage hospital and Mr Lindsay suggested that, as well as the 20mph limit a priority lane system could be introduced.

No arrests made after DoorDash driver shot in front of teen in Boston
Police are investigating after a DoorDash driver was shot while making a delivery Friday night in Boston's Brighton neighborhood. Police said the frightening incident happened on Faneuil Street at around 11:40 p.m. Fourteen-year-old Jenny said she was standing right next to the DoorDash driver when he was shot. She said she had ordered some food from Outback Steakhouse and she and her seven-year-old sister came outside to pick up her order. "It was super scary. He was bending over to take a picture of the food, and that's when we heard, I guess, two loud gunshots like fireworks, and he just fell to the ground, and he was holding his stomach. And he was rolling on the ground," said Jenny. "My first instinct was to just grab her [my sister]." Police said the DoorDash driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Jenny's mother, Castillo, said she's thankful her two girls are OK. "We couldn't sleep, my girls now they don't feel safe here," said Castillo. "They just came out of the door and who would expect anything to happen?" On Saturday, police were seen patrolling the area. The shooting took place right across the street from a playground. The close-knit family said they're thankful no one else got hurt. "Sad and we need to be more alert," said Castillo. "I hope the police are trying to find the people who are making our community not safe. We live in front of a park, and we want to feel safe, and we want our kids to feel safe." Jenny said she's thankful to be alive. "I'm super grateful. I was literally thanking God in every possible way that I am OK and my sister is OK," said Jenny. "I just want to get out that gun violence needs to stop because a lot of people not only lose their family members, their friends, people close to them. And not only does it hurt the person getting shot, it can also hurt the people around them a lot." Police are still investigating the shooting. So far, no arrests have been made.
