
Lies of P: Overture is a massive expansion for one of my favorite PS5 games — and it's absolutely brutal
While I thoroughly enjoyed all of those titles, my personal pick for the best game of the year was Lies of P. And after all this time, I stand by it.
This action-Souls-like shamelessly cribs from the works of genre-originator FromSoftware, and feels a lot like the Bloodborne sequel we all want, but Sony frustratingly refuses to actually give us (Please, Sony, even a remaster will do).
I loved almost every moment of my 60 hours spent with Lies of P across two playthroughs (one on PS5, the other on Steam Deck OLED), and that playtime just increased thanks to its meaty new DLC expansion.
Called Lies of P: Overture, it offers you the chance to return to the gothic city of Krat and square off against a new range of tough bosses that will do their very best to cut you down.
In a nutshell, Overture is more of the brilliant Lies of P experience I love, but with the difficulty ramped up to 11.

In Lies of P: Overture, you once again play as Geppetto's deadly puppet and are tasked with exploring the nightmare city of Krat. The wrinkle is that this time, you've stepped into the past to experience the striking location before the events of the base game. But it's certainly no more welcoming in this period.
The Puppet Frenzy massacre, the aftermath of which you encounter in the base game, is currently ongoing, dropping you into the thick of a city in complete turmoil with chaotic scenes of violence and blue blood all around. So, where do you go first? The Zoo, of course.
Overture's opening takes you to Krat Zoo, and it might just be my favorite level in all of Lies of P. Fighting back against deformed animals from aggressive ages, to a truly twisted type of kangaroo, sees the body-horror, which was already a strong theme in Lies of P, ramped up to new grotesque levels. And the first major boss fight, an oversized crocodile, is an absolutely doozy.
Later DLC locations like an underground facility and a cavernous mine are less visually dynamic, but the final two of Overture's five chapters do occur in more visually distinctive settings (which I won't spoil here). So, the DLC starts and ends strong, with a slightly mundane middle.
The core game's fast-paced combat is maintained, which is a very good thing, because outside of the works of FromSoftware, Lies of P offers the best Soulslike gameplay I've ever played. Though, for the record, I still suck at parrying, so the dodge button remains my best friend.
Perhaps the DLC's biggest addition is its numerous lore implications and revelations. I'm far from a Lies of P scholar, but I was constantly finding hidden notes that had me rethinking what I thought I knew about the Lies of P universe and the characters within it. If you enjoyed the well-told story of the base game, you're going to love what you learn here.
Alongside the new levels to explore, there's also a bunch of useful new weapons to pick up, new gear to wear and powerful legion arms, including my personal favorite, which lets you shoot spinning sawblades from your wrist.
Adding around 10-15 hours of new content, Lies of P: Overture is solid value for money at its $29 price. But fair warning, prepare for a tough time.
If I have one substantial criticism of Lies of P: Overture, it's that developer Neowiz has gone a little too far in its efforts to make this DLC the hardest content in the game to date.
As part of the Soulslike subgenre, Lies of P was always a tough game by design. And that's part of the reason I loved it so much. Few feelings are better in gaming than slaying a testing boss after dozens of attempts. And some of the base game bosses rank as my favorite ever in the genre.
In fact, it's not Overture's bosses where the overtuned difficulty can be felt. Aside from one late-game dud, these named DLC combatants are mostly brilliant. The last boss in particular gives Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree a run for its money. Finally bringing them down had me leaping from my chair in satisfaction after they had torn my face off for almost an hour.
The problem arises in the various open spaces, corridors and choke points between bosses. Regular enemy mobs have had their health pools and damage-dealing abilities seriously beefed up, and even my max-level weapons often felt like merely smacking a raging puppet with a pool noodle.
Overture also appears to have taken cues from the divisive Dark Souls 2, as not only are standard enemies extremely overpowered, they're also thrown at you in sometimes ludicrous quantities. I'm taking crammed rooms that contain an enemy count in the double digits.
This leads to numerous sections that are a complete slog to play as you regularly find yourself swarmed by enemies that can send you to an early grave in just a few hits, and that take a practically silly amount of damage to be defeated. These moments see Lies of P: Overture fall on the wrong side of the fine line between frustration and fun.
To somewhat counteract this issue, Lies of P: Overture's launch has coincided with a major free upgrade that adds two new difficulty options to the game. One is marked as essentially easy, the other very easy. Of course, for dedicated Souls players, dropping the difficulty is antithetical to why the genre appeals; the struggle is supposed to be part of the experience.
I should warn any new players hoping these new difficulty settings might allow them to breeze through the game, and enjoy the excellent world-building and rich lore, even on the simplest setting, Lies of P: Overture still puts up a real fight. You will need some skill, whatever level you play on.
Overall, Lies of P: Overture has given me the perfect excuse to return to one of my favorite games of this current gaming generation. It's a largely well-crafted expansion with some intriguing new locations to explore, and some tough but tantalizing new bosses to overcome. I just wish the supposedly "regular" enemies didn't always hit with the force of a turbocharged monster truck.
However, after rolling credits on Overture, my itch for more Lies of P remains burning, which is perhaps its biggest accomplishment. I was already desperate for the already-confirmed full sequel, and after experiencing Lies of P: Overture, that wait is going to feel just a little bit longer.

'Fantastic Four: First Steps' proves why the MCU needs to get weirder to shake its post-'End Game' slump
I fell off the MCU hard after "Avengers: Endgame" — and I'm far from the only one. Marvel has struggled to regain its momentum post-Thanos snap, a fact made crystal clear last year when Robert Downey Jr. was announced to rejoin the franchise. Between a convoluted jumble of multiversal plotlines and TV spin-offs, the prominent exit of the MCU's next big bad, and extensive reshoots that left big-ticket sequels like "Captain America: Brave New World" a hot mess, the MCU is facing a reckoning. Don't think that the MCU's stumbling means audiences are any less hungry for superhero flicks. The success of James Gunn's 'Superman' proves there's still a strong appetite for caped crusaders. It's the highest-grossing solo Superman film to date after earning $292.4 million domestically at the box office, overtaking the $291 million total of the 2013 "Man of Steel." The critical success of recent MCU entries like "Thunderbolts" is a promising sign that Marvel may be close to finding its groove again. After seeing "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" in the theaters, I'm confident Marvel can keep this momentum going — but only if it commits to getting weirder from here on out. When it comes to the MCU, weird works. That much was clear even before "Endgame." Taika Waititi's "Thor Ragnarok" was a huge middle finger to the previous Thor movies, steeped in '80s rock opera camp with a comedic bent. It injected new life into one of the most underdeveloped Avengers after his snoozefest of a second film. In that same vein, "Wandavision" is the jewel of the MCU's catalogue of shows on Disney Plus, and it marked a stark departure for the franchise with its mix of sitcom shenanigans, fourth-wall breaking, and horror vibes. I wasn't surprised to learn the show's director, Matt Shakman, is in the director's chair for "First Steps, because both the TV show and the movie share a seriously impressive commitment to a distinct aesthetic. With the Fantastic Four's track record of big-screen adaptations, I wasn't looking forward to this summer's "The Fantastic Four: First Steps." Then I saw the trailer, and I was immediately sold on the look, if nothing else. As a huge "Fallout" fan, the retro-futuristic aesthetic instantly caught my attention. Marvel was able to craft such a unique style for "First Steps" because it's set on a new Earth apart from the rest of the MCU, one where the Space Age never came to a close. And that fact shines through in every shot of this strange, colorful retrofuturistic version of Manhattan. It feels straight out of a comic book, a fever dream of mod fashion, Flash-Gordon-inspired rocket ships, flying cars, and midcentury modern pizzazz. It's visually distinct from anything in the MCU we've seen so far, and I sincerely hope it paves the way for even more stylish (and strange) versions of Earth in future MCU outings. I already spend way too much time playing my PS5 — and this mobile controller just made things a whole lot worse
The PS5 Slim just won the award for Best Console in this year's Tom's Guide Gaming Awards, and rightly so. Personally, it's my favorite console and it's the best investment I've made so far. When I'm not working or spending time with my partner, I'm sinking hours into RPGs like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Baldur's Gate 3. There are times I wish I owned a PlayStation Portal so I could play on the go... but why get that when I can get one of the best phone controllers instead and turn my smartphone into a gaming powerhouse? There are many mobile controllers available today, and I've just tested my favorite yet: the Backbone Pro. The Backbone Pro is a solid phone gaming controller that improves on its predecessor by introducing chunkier grips, Hall Effect triggers and customizable back buttons. The triggers and back buttons, combined with the responsive analog thumbsticks, enhance mobile gaming and make it more immersive. Battery life is long and alongside USB-C connectivity, there's Bluetooth too. What makes the Backbone Pro so special and fantastic is its ergonomic design and 40-hour battery life, both of which enable you to play all day long. Backbone has also added Hall Effect triggers to the controller, giving you more precision and control over finetuning your movements. I can't believe I've gone so long without a mobile controller, and here's why I won't be leaving the apartment without the Backbone Pro now. I've been on the fence about getting a PlayStation Portal. On the one hand, I'd love to be able to play PS5 games anywhere in the world (as long as I have WiFi) with haptica feedback on what's basically a split DualSense controller. On the other hand, I know it isn't the most user-friendly experience. So why get that when I can just use the Backbone Pro? The Backbone Pro can be used with PS Remote Play on iOS and iPadOS devices. While the controller isn't big enough to accommodate iPads (not even the Mini), there's plenty of space to mount your iPhone, and I played my PS5 games on an iPhone 15 Pro — and it worked like a charm. What's even better is that the Backbone Pro can be used wirelessly over a Bluetooth LE connection, so you can use it untethered as a regular gamepad. While it can't pair with my PS5 Slim due to Sony's restrictions, it works with PC, tablets, Xbox, MacBooks, Android and iOS smartphones, you name it. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. So if you need a second gamepad that doubles as a mobile controller, the Backbone Pro is the one for you. As I mentioned up top, the Backbone Pro features Hall Effect triggers which means they're more durable and sensitive compared to traditional analog ones — and I really wish the PlayStation DualSense had them. They make the Backbone Pro a formidable gamepad. Over a steady WiFi connection which negated any input lag while streaming, all of my commands on the controller registered promptly. I was parrying like my life depended on it in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and I took out Nevrons with ease thanks to the highly responsive Hall Effect triggers. The triggers and comfortable, full-size thumbsticks came in clutch in Need for Speed Heat too, aiding me in turning tight corners and drifting down winding mountainous roads with ease. Also, the Backbone Pro's R1 and L1 triggers have very short travel distances, so a short, simple tap is more than enough for your command to register. This made quick work of cycling through weapon radial menus in Baldur's Gate 3. There are also two back buttons on the Backbone Pro which can be remapped via the (very user-friendly) companion software. You won't understand the importance and impact back buttons have on making games more immersive until you've tried them. Read about my experience with them in my full Backbone Pro review. Let's talk about the elephant in the room: the Backbone Pro's price. This isn't a cheap controller, especially compared to its $99 predecessor, the Backbone One. The Backbone Pro retails for $169 / £169 — that's only $30 cheaper than the PlayStation Portal's retail price. The thing is, many of the Backbone Pro's competitors cost much less, such as the Scuf Nomad ($99), the Gamesir G8 Galileo ($99) and, its stablemate, the Backbone One Gen 2 ($99). This isn't a cheap investment, and at this price, I expected the Backbone Pro's thumbsticks to feature Hall Effect sensors and for some app features not to be paywalled. Should you still buy it? If you can afford it, I don't see why not. It's got a lot of potential and it exceeded my expectations when I reviewed it. My dreams of owning a PlayStation Portal have been realized... in a twisted, roundabout way, at least. ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps' review: Ugh, here we go again
movie review FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS Running time: 115 minutes. Rated PG-13 (action/violence and some language). In theaters July 25. Calling 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' the best 'Fantastic Four' movie is not exactly a quote I'd advise Disney to slap on the poster. Talk about grading on a curve. The last three pathetic attempts to put the story of Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch and the Thing onscreen have made miserable viewers go, 'Global annihilation? Sounds nice.' Not to be deterred, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is dragging the raggedy group out of storage for their 37th movie. That figure is unfortunately not a typo. The result? 'First Steps' marks a slight improvement from the preceding trilogy of terror. But Marvel still can't nail what should be one of its premiere attractions. 'Fantastic Four'? Forgettable, 1 ½. The movie begins, appropriately, with a pep in its step. Dropping the heroes in the retro-futuristic NYC that appears to be a technologically advanced 1960s is the right call by director Matt Shakman and his army of screenwriters. There's 'Jetsons' visual panache that sets the film apart from the other, oy, 36. The team's New York lair could be the TWA Hotel at JFK. Also, gold star for racing through the exposition in a newsreel at the beginning — four years ago some astronauts got neat powers in space, yada yada — to avoid the usual origin story portentousness. However, trembling in fear, 'First Steps' can't resist the comic-book urge to contort the mood ASAP to grave, gloomy and un-fun for most of the runtime. The stakes may be stratospherically high, but our serotonin levels are low, low, low. For the supes, Marvel has recruited some super-serious actors. There's Pedro Pascal, who has probably been frowning so much because he's overworked, as stretchy Reed Richards; Vanessa Kirby, making Medea seem like the life of the party, as vanishing Sue Storm; Joseph Quinn, nervously tip-toeing around genuine comedy, as flaming Johnny Storm; and Ebon Moss-Bachrach with a Zen take on rocky Ben Grimm. They're all fine, if oddly joyless for people wearing powder-blue 'Star Trek' uniforms. I can't say I ever want to see them play these parts again. Good thing they've been cast in at least two more MCU films through 2027. The Four face a couple foes. There's the humongous Galactus, who is essentially Megatron from 'Transformers.' And his shiny cowabunga henchwoman, the Silver Surfer, played by Julia Garner. Whose dumb idea was it to cast Garner, one of the most expressive and electric actors working today, as a slab of metal that speaks in monotone? Fee-fi-ho-hum Galactus is going to gobble up the world. But he offers the Four another option: He'll slow his roll if Reed and Sue hand over their new baby. The doting parents aren't on board with that plan. So, in a scene that lasts — I kid you not — two minutes, they try and fail to teleport the Earth to another part of the universe. In the end, Galactus goes Godzilla and stomps around Manhattan crushing skyscrapers. The Thing, a dude made of rocks, is the closest the movie comes to a fleshed-out person. And only because he cooks pasta and flirts with Natasha Lyonne twice. I'll give 'First Steps' this: It doesn't tie itself in knots making tedious connections to the rest of the MCU. The story is relatively simple, if poorly paced, and the neat aesthetic imagines what an Apple Store would look like during the Kennedy administration. But that's just not enough to prevent Shakman from joining the sorry ranks of filmmakers who couldn't wrap their heads around what the tone of the Fantastic Four should be. Are they funny? Are they grounded? Are they deep? The film is so unbalanced, one wonders if the director and writers donned a blindfold and threw a dart. How dramatic and depressing can a character named Mister Fantastic possibly be? Just you wait. During the climactic battle scene, Galactus torturously stretches Mister Fantastic nearly beyond his limits as Pascal wails an excruciating cry worthy of 'One Life to Live.'
