George Gibney consents to extradition to Ireland to face sex crime charges
, the former Irish Olympic swimming team coach, has formally consented to being extradited from the
US
to Ireland to face 79 sex crime charges.
He has also withdrawn a request to fight his continued detention, which was due to be heard in court on Friday.
Mr Gibney remains in custody in the US on foot of a request to the authorities in Florida, where he has been living, to arrest him for the purposes of extradition.
The 77-year-old is accused of 78 charges of indecent assault and one of attempted rape. The alleged victims were aged between eight and 14 or 15 years when they say they were abused by Mr Gibney, who was their swimming coach in South Dublin at different times between 1971 and 1981.

In the latest court filings related to his case, Mr Gibney's lawyer Alec Fitzgerald Hall sets out how he consulted with his client on Tuesday and fully advised him of his rights in the extradition process. This included his rights to a detention hearing and an extradition hearing.
Arising from that meeting, he said Mr Gibney has 'decided to withdraw his request to a detention hearing and stipulate to detention'.
He has also stated he wants to 'waive his extradition hearing and be extradited to Ireland'.
Mr Fitzgerald Hall added that an 'affidavit of waiver of extradition hearing' would be filed 'as soon as possible'.
Mr Gibney's extradition to the Republic will now proceed and he is likely to appear before a Dublin court in the near future.
He had requested a detention hearing in the US, but the US attorney for the Middle District of Florida, Gregory W Kehoe, last week urged the district court in Orlando to deny any application for bail for Mr Gibney pending his extradition.
The court was told that as Mr Gibney was facing such serious criminal charges in Ireland, and the prospect of spending the rest of his life in jail, he had an incentive to flee if granted bail.
In 1993, Mr Gibney appeared before the courts in Dublin charged with 27 sexual crimes. However, he took a High Court challenge to his prosecution and was successful. The court effectively ruled in 1994 that the allegations were too old, and many details were too vague, to warrant a prosecution.
However, legal norms and legislation have since changed in Ireland, meaning the prosecution of historical sexual crimes now regularly occurs. Suspects in historical cases no longer have the grounds they once did to avoid prosecution.
Mr Gibney left Ireland in the 1990s, settling in the US, and remained there for the past 30 years, residing in Florida in recent years.
However, between 2020 and 2022 the BBC-Second Captains podcast, entitled Where is George Gibney?, prompted the four women now accusing him to give statements to the Garda.
A fresh criminal investigation began, with the Director of Public Prosecutions directing in May 2023 that he should face 79 charges, with arrest warrants issued by the courts in Dublin.
Last October, the Irish embassy in Washington formally made a request to the US authorities to arrest Mr Gibney for the purpose of extraditing to the Republic to stand trial. He was detained by US marshals in Florida on July 1st and remains in custody there.

Trio remanded after nearly €1.3m in suspected crime earnings seized
Three men arrested after gardaí seized €1.28 million in suspected crime earnings in south Dublin this week have been remanded in custody. Chinese national Kwan Wang (36) who lives in Hong Kong, Vladislavs Temmis (54) a Russian speaker from Latvia and 47-year-old Ik Joo Kang, from South Korea, appeared before Judge Stephanie Coggans at Dublin District Court on Saturday. All three held off on moving bail applications. The arrests were part of an operation targeting an organised crime group. Gardaí with the Dublin Crime Response Team stopped and searched a car in Donnybrook, Dublin 4, on Thursday, where they found €197,760 and arrested one man. During follow-up searches in south Dublin, gardaí seized an additional €1,086,175 in cash, bringing the total amount of money recovered in this investigation to €1,283,935. Mr Temmis allegedly had €197,760 at Donnybrook Road, Dublin 4, and a further €27,500 at an address on Brewery Road, Stillorgan, south Dublin. His two co-defendants are also accused of having the €197,760, but it is alleged they possessed it in a 2025-registered vehicle at Donnybrook Road. The three men, who do not have stated addresses in the Republic, were dealt with separately and listened to the proceedings with the aid of interpreters. However, Mr Ik's response was: 'Yes, I will not accept this.' Man (60s) dies in car crash in Co Tipperary
A man (60s) has died following a single vehicle car crash in Cahir, Co Tipperary on Saturday morning. Gardaí and emergency services responded to the collision on the N24 at Kilmoyler, Cahir at about 10.40am. The driver and sole occupant of the car was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body has been removed to Tipperary University Hospital where a postmortem examination will be carried out. River search begins as part of Carrick-on-Suir murder inquiry
Gardaí investigating the murder of a man (49) in Carrick on Suir, Co Tipperary, have begun searches of the river Suir in an attempt to find the weapon they believe was used in the killing. Garda Water Unit members travelled from Dublin on Saturday morning and began searching the stretch of water near the town. The search is part of the investigation into the murder of Irish Rail worker Ian Walsh, who was found dead in his home in the town last weekend. Garda search teams have been joined by members of the Defence Forces in searching by the river bank. They are combing the area for what gardaí believe was a bladed weapon used to kill Mr Walsh, and other possible evidence which may assist them. The decision to search the river, which is about 1.5km from Mr Walsh's house at Ravenswood off the Cregg Road, comes as gardaí continue to examine tens of hours of CCTV footage harvested from around the town. READ MORE Gardaí are remaining tight-lipped about their investigation, but it is understood they have not been able to get any confirmed sighting of Mr Walsh alive later than 8pm on Friday, August 1st. That suggests that he was killed sometime over the August bank holiday weekend. It is understood Mr Walsh usually met up with family or friends most Sundays. When he failed to show up or make contact with them on Sunday, they became worried and contacted gardaí. Mr Walsh was found in an unresponsive state after suffering several stab wounds in a downstairs room at his house, where he lived alone. He was discovered by gardaí at about 3.30am on Monday. This confirmed Garda suspicions that he had been the victim of foul play, and they upgraded their investigation to a murder inquiry. Gardaí are keeping an open mind on a motive for the murder of Mr Walsh, a keen cyclist, who was a familiar figure around Carrick-on-Suir. He frequently cycled around the town and along the popular Blueway cycle path along the Suir connecting the town with Clonmel. They have renewed their appeal for anyone with information related to the fatal assault to come forward. This includes any road users who were in the area of Cregg Road, Carrick-On-Suir between 8pm on Friday, August 1st, and 3.30am on Monday, August 4th. Mr Walsh worked as a signalman at Kent Station in Cork city and was a noted railway enthusiast.
