Jack Suwinski's tiebreaking homer in the 9th lifts Pirates over struggling Cubs 3-2

CHICAGO (AP) — Jack Suwinski hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the ninth inning to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 3-2 win over the struggling Chicago Cubs on Friday. Suwinski, a Chicago native, hit Daniel Palencia's (1-3) 1-1 fastball the opposite way, into the left-field bleachers for his third homer. The Pirates ended a five-game losing steak and sent the Cubs to their fourth loss in five games. Pete Crow-Armstrong broke out of a 3-for-41 slump by going 3 for 3 with his first RBI since July 30. Crow-Armstrong also was hit by a pitch and scored a run. The Cubs All-Star was thrown out twice on the bases; trying to stretch a single to double in the fourth and was caught stealing in the ninth after leading off with a single. Andrew McCutchen and Isaiah Kiner-Falefa each had an RBI double. The Cubs entered eight games behind surging NL Central-leading Milwaukee. Matt Shaw added a sac fly. Dennis Santana (4-4) got the final four outs for the win. Cubs starter Colin Rea allowed one run on three hits in five innings. The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on McCutchen's double. The Cubs tied it in the bottom half on Crow-Armstrong's RBI single. Kiner-Falefa's RBI double in the seventh put Pittsburgh ahead 2-1. The Cubs tied it at 2 in the bottom half on Shaw's sac fly with the bases loaded, scoring Crow-Armstrong from third. Up next Pirates RHP Mike Burrows (1-4, 4.66 ERA) faces Cubs LHP Shota Imanaga (8-5, 3.19) on Saturday. ___

Series Preview: Tampa Bay Rays vs San Francisco Giants

The Tampa Bay Rays have had an up-and-down road west coast swing thus far as they've sandwiched a series sweep at the hands of the Seattle Mariners between a couple of series victories over the Los Angeles Angels and Athletics; now, the Rays will complete their journey out west with a three game series in San Francisco. By taking two of three over the Athletics, the Rays improved to 59-63 on the season and sit 5.5 games back of the Yankees in the Wild Card chase; the Rays will need to go 28-12 the rest of the way to reach 87 wins which is what it'll likely take to reach the postseason. The Giants meanwhile are in a similar spot. After teetering around .500 over the first three months of the season, the team struggled in July (notably after acquring Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox). This has dropped them to 59-62, 5 games back of the New York Mets for the 3rd Wild Card spot. The Giants are not a bad team and have a roster filled with solid players. Matt Chapman has 3 fWAR, and is hitting .229/.337/.423 with 16 HR, registering a 118 wRC+ while being among the top defensive third baseman in baseball. Patrick Bailey leads all catchers with 15 DRS and 16 FRV; but he is among the worst hitters in the game (65 wRC+), despite this, he has 2.2 fWAR. Then there is Willy Adames. The former Rays shortstop is in the first year of a $182M contract that he signed this past offseason. After struggling early on, Adames has found his footing in San Francisco; if you ignore his first two weeks, he has been an above average offensive player. Overall, Adames is hitting .223/.309/.393 with 18 HR, registering a 99 wRC+ and accruing 2.3 fWAR over 120 games. Rafael Devers has been a solid offensive player for the Giants, but his defense is still a major detriment to his game. On the pitching side, Logan Webb should receive some Cy Young votes while Robbie Ray has bounced back following a couple of tough years. Randy Rodriguez is one of the top relievers in baseball. Frivolities The top players to have played for the Rays and Giants according to Baseball-Reference. Evan Longoria Randy Winn Scott Kazmir Aubrey Huff Blake Snell The Rays best player offensively against the Giants all-time (min. 10 PA): Kevin Kiermaier: .400/.500/.900 with 1 HR over 12 PA The next four are Jose Cruz Jr, Brad Miller, Wil Myers, & Ben Grieve The Rays most previous transacation with the Giants 2/6/2025: Giants claim Osleivis Basabe from the Rays The Rays first transaction with the Giants 4/28/06: Rays trade Carlos Hines to the Giants for Tyler Walker Probable pitchers are projected by MLB GAME ONE Friday, August 15th10:15 pm EDT RHP Joe Boyle vs RHP Landen Roupp GAME TWO Saturday, August 16th9:05 pm EDT RHP Adrian Houser vs Justin Verlander GAME THREE Sunday, August 17th4:05 pm EDT RHP Ryan Pepiot vs RHP Logan Webb
