Wicklow student's evening dress made from old jeans wins national award

When you're in a charity shop and see a nice pair of second-hand jeans, they don't immediately scream 'evening dress'. But for one talented Wicklow student that level of imagination has led to a national award.
Loreto Bray Secondary School, along with other Wicklow secondary schools, participated in 'ReLove Fashion', which is a sustainable fashion competition open to young people of secondary school age in Ireland.
This year, Edena Foot, a third-year student, won the national award for 'best evening dress'. With a growing focus on sustainable, slow fashion, Edena created a stunning evening dress from old denim jeans found in a local charity shop. The dress features hand embroidery and was inspired by aquatic life and the pollution caused by fast fashion.
She received her award as primary and secondary schools accepted their well-deserved Green Flags at The Helix in Dublin, in recognition of the excellent work undertaken by students as part of the Green Schools program delivered by An Taisce.
Along the same theme as Edena's dress, the 'Rubbish Film Festival' is a creative transition year program that provides a platform for students to explore and research sustainable development goal number 12, 'responsible consumption'.
The short, one-minute films created by student teams were full of well-researched topics, focusing on themes such as fast fashion, habitat destruction, water conservation, and even AI. Coláiste Craobh Abhann took the county's best prize back to Kilcoole, while Coláiste Raithin won county first prize for the best impact film, which was presented in Gaeilge. Additionally, St David's in Greystones was awarded second place for the best film award.
Another winner was Gaelscoil an Inbhir Mhóir in Arklow, awarded a regional prize for their efforts focused on the water theme.
Additionally, Scoil Mhuire Réalt na Mara in Brittas Bay received a regional award for their outstanding work on the 'global citizenship marine environment' theme and also secured a national award under the Marine Institute's explorer's education programme. Scoil Mhuire Réalt na Mara is one of only 32 European schools selected for the recently launched EU Blue Lights program.

RTÉ seeks expressions of interest for presenter roles for radio and news
As broadcaster Joe Duffy prepares to retire from Liveline on RTÉ Radio 1 on Friday 27 June, RTÉ has announced it is running an open internal and external 'expressions of interest' process for interested potential on-air presenters across RTÉ Radio 1 and News and Current Affairs. Signed by Patricia Monahan, Director of Audio and Deirdre McCarthy, Director of News and Current Affairs, they confirm that "candidates both inside and outside RTÉ" are being invited to apply across a "wide variety of areas". The advertisement confirms that this process fulfils one of the key recommendations of the Government's Expert Advisory Committee in its 2024 report. This follows a similar process run for RTÉ's 2fm last year, where external presenters including: Benny Bracken, Mikey O'Reilly, Demi Isaac and Hugh Carr, have been appointed to on-air roles on the station. The announcement confirms that the broadcaster is now launching an expressions of interest for candidates "interested in on-air presenting roles" including News, Current Affairs, General Speech Programming, Entertainment, Sport, Music and the Arts. The job advertisement references RTÉ Radio 1's position as the "most listened to radio station in Ireland" and that is it a "centre of excellent in Public Service Broadcasting". The statement points to potential presenting opportunities, including a reference to Mr Duffy's retirement saying that "as you know RTÉ Radio 1 currently has a role available for a presenter of Liveline," and also includes reference to RTÉ News and Current Affairs also having "a vacancy for a presenter with an initial assignment in radio news programmes and podcasting". The advertisement outlines the process in more detail, clarifying that a "long list of potential presenters" in each of the areas outlined will be created as a result of this process, and will be refreshed every two years. There is a reference though to the results of this call out being just "part" of the system to be appointed as a presenter, with the advert stating that when a presenting role becomes available, the longlist will be used as "part of the process" to identify suitable candidates. The closing date for receipt of applications is Friday, 4 July.

Pride celebrations taking place across Ireland this June
From sunset kayaking in Kerry to a Pride pub quiz in Dublin, there's something for everyone to enjoy this Pride month in Ireland. Salon Rógaire: Bród, Dublin This bimonthly, Gaeilge-centric literary salon is hosting a special Pride event on 12 June. Taking place in The Winding Stair Bookshop, Bród: Queer Dublin will feature a literary lineup of certified movers and shakers. Tickets cost €11.70, with all profits on the evening going to the Trans Equality Network Ireland. This is a BYOB event. Mother Pride, Dublin Trixie Mattel is coming to Dublin! Mother Dublin is hosting a day of dancing at the National Museum of Ireland on 28 June, featuring a DJ set with Trixie Mattel and performances from Samantha Mumba, The Blessed Madonna, and Haus of Wig. There will be fairground rides, food trucks, live performances and much more. Tickets from €54.57. Queer Cinema for Palestine, Dublin Outhouse LGBTQ+ Centre in Dublin is hosting an evening of queer Palestinian cinema in solidarity with the global movement No Pride in Genocide. Pride Tag Rugby, Cork Hosted by Cork Hellhounds RFC and supported by the IRFU, this 1-day tag tournament will kick your Cork Pride celebrations off in style! Taking place on 27 June at Virgin Media Park from 11am - 5pm.
