Tracing trends is always a slippery topic. Sometimes, just when you think you have nailed it, things flip. So, to the best of my ability, here are some trends to take note of.
Big, bold hair is back – and just after you had mastered the perfect poker-straight blow-dry. According to the international king of hair, Sam McKnight, 'bombshell blowouts' are big news. The reference point is, of course, the 1980s and the tool of choice is velcro rollers. McKnight has created the 'Big Set', which comes with a 'heating hood' you attach to your hairdryer and 18 rollers.
Says McKnight, 'Velcro rollers have been a staple since the '80s – they're foolproof for getting that runway lift at the roots and a soft, touchable texture. The hood dryer locks in your set – it's a game-changer for effortless, high-volume results at home.' Until the kit is available here, the next best thing is the Blo Brush Hot Roller Set ($120).
On the TikTok beauty front, trends include the clean brow, where the emphasis is on natural brow shapes and textures, stepping away from more sculpted 'block' brows. This has also created a demand for laser eyebrow tattoo removal. According to brow guru Amy Jean Linnehan, 'If the shape and colour still flatter your face, there's no need to remove the tattoo – and you can opt for the latest, softer 'mist brows' technique.'
As with brows, lashes are also taking a more natural stance, and TikTokkers are currently experimenting by applying a full face of make-up – without mascara. But if you are still wedded to mascara, try brown – our current favourite is Benefit BadGal Bang! Volumizing Mascara in Rebel Brown ($49). Alternatively, try applying a clear mascara such as Maybelline Great Lash Clear Gel Mascara ($18) to give your eyelashes a glossy, lifted look. And if you just can't give up dark lashes, try a combined lash lift and tint.
The 'Y2K lip' is also on the comeback trail, with two key versions – super juicy lips (think Lancôme's Juicy Tubes) and, at the other end of the spectrum, lips blotted with concealer so that they almost disappear. On TikTok, interest in Y2K make-up increased by 64.8 per cent in the 12 months to March according to data from consumer researcher Spate reported in Global Cosmetic Industry magazine.
Too Faced is leading the charge with glosses that are shiny and hydrating; we love Kissing Jelly Lip Oil Gloss ($38). And with concealer lips, keep it modern with a darker lip liner. One of our favourites is Mecca Max Pout Pencil in Stella ($16) – use it to colour in the entire lip – and then top with a putty-coloured lipstick. Hero status here goes to M.A.C Cosmetics Macximal Silky Matte Lipstick in Acting Natural ($40).

Single pic exposes how grim Sydney dating really is

Commentary in response to a photograph has exposed Sydney's bleak dating scene, as many share details of absolutely unhinged behaviour they have encountered while trying to find a soulmate. An image posted to TikTok of the Barangaroo skyline was accompanied by a simple question – asking people to share tales of their worst date in the Harbour City — and the answers did not disappoint. Hordes of social media users unashamedly unloaded their dating traumas. Some were about getting stiffed on the bill at dinner. Some called out dating culture in general. Others shared very specific details of their dud dates. To sum it up — if you don't laugh, you'll cry. Yes, it's that dark. 'Took her to a nice restaurant. She ordered a $30 drink. Didn't like the drink, so she ordered another. Didn't like that one either, so she ordered a THIRD and wasted the other two,' one said. 'She ordered four lots of food to 'try'. Only ate half of it and took the rest home in three takeaway boxes. Bill was $250. I didn't realise this date was supposed to be her meal prep for the week.' Another asked: 'What date? People don't approach you in Sydney.' 'Picked me up and asked me where I wanna go to eat. I said 'I don't know. I thought you had a plan',' one social media user commented. 'He took me to Macca's. I was put off so I just asked for an ice cream and he made me pay for my it and complained that I expected him to pay for my 80c ice cream.' Another revealed: 'Guy asks me out. I order a cocktail. He says 'oh how many of those are you gonna have? I don't wanna have to call my dad for money to cover the bill later'. He was 46.' 'It got so bad I moved states,' another shared. One social media user added: 'I told him I don't drink and he took me bar hopping.' 'The problem with dating in Sydney is that if you don't live next door to them you might as well live on Mars, because it's just as much effort to get them to meet you halfway,' one commented. Another weighed in: 'This bad culture is solely because of dating apps.' 'Went on a date with someone, 2nd date in they wanted my social media passwords. I never dropped someone back at their place so quick in my life. No thanks,' shared someone. One commented: 'HE ASKED ME FOR RENT MONEY, after meeting ONCE. And I had to pick him up and I got us food and he ate it all LEFT ME NOTHING and then tried to kiss me.' 'What dates? I'm just a certified pen pal at this point,' one added. Another said: 'He took me to Woolies on the first date and proceeded to buy his mum groceries and he kept getting calls from his mum the entire time.' 'I was 24 and he was 32. When I told him my age he gasped, said I'm so old and proceeded to say his grandmother had four kids at my age. He kept swearing, zero decorum and decency,' one person divulged. Samantha Jayne, a relationship expert, was left asking one question after seeing what had unfolded in the comment section. 'Where has the romance gone?' She said the experience of Sydneysiders was 'sad' and showed just how many people were lacking empathy when it came to the dating scene. She did point out a lot of these were 'extreme cases' and most were 'fortunate cases of dodging a bullet'. 'The common theme is most bad dates are when the focus is on the superficial things,' she said. 'The cause is often because there's no emotional connection established and therefore no empathy. It's all about what is in it for me. 'Empathy requires some level of understanding or resonance with another person's emotions — and if that connection hasn't formed, their ability (or willingness) to empathise might feel absent.' Ms Jayne said the recurring theme was empty and disposable, and stemmed from a 'grass is always greener' perspective, thanks to the pick-up culture that has long been established in Sydney. 'Ultimately, even the people who are looking for the next best thing feel lonely and want a connection, in many cases the most insecure people reject before they get rejected or self sabotage to prevent a real connection forming,' she said. So, is Sydney a worse place for love than other cities in the world? According to Ms Jayne, yes. 'I love Sydney, I think it's one of the most beautiful places in the world but according to Time Out Magazine the city is a battlefield when it comes to love,' she said. 'An annual survey conducted ranked Sydney as one of the top 10 worst places to find love. 'Sydney ranks among 10 worst places in the world for finding love.' She pointed out that Sydneysiders have high expectations, and due to cost of living there is a focus on status, wealth and physical appearance. She said it's also a very 'clique' based city with tight-knit social circles. 'Often the two most common questions asked are 'Where do you live' and 'What do you do?' Most people date within their stereotypical suburbs which can create the socio economic divide,' she explained. Ms Jayne said another reason first dates can feel awkward and performative is, because at the end of the day, they are surface level interactions. She said without depth they may not feel invested enough to feel vulnerable. It can lead to a cycle of hurt and avoiding feeling vulnerable. 'Bottom line is some people have mismatched intentions while you may be wanting something genuine. A person may have watched one too many drama filled dating shows as they try to keep things cool,' she said. 'Dating is mostly based on perceptions and individual experiences, it is important to consider mindset and filtering. 'If you have a bad date, dust yourself off and try again. Don't let it get you down, instead laugh it off and get out there and meet someone who is aligned and makes you feel good.'

What really caused backlash following a video of woman's feet on a plane

A mum is in hot water after choosing to toe the line, instead of confronting a bare foot bandit during a flight with her daughter. A video she posted to TikTok has gone viral after she filmed her daughter seated beside a stranger who had their bare, dirty feet propped up on the chair between them. We're talking overgrown toenails, misshapen toes, and dry skin so crusty it's begging for a PedEgg intervention. The clip has racked up more than 10 million views and sparked plenty of opinions in the comment section. 'You should have said something' It's set to the trending 'Nothing beats a Jet2 holiday' sound, a popular track used to poke fun at holiday fails. People have slammed the unsavoury passenger behaviour. 'That's so rude,' one person writes. Not ideal, if you ask me. 'Maybe she literally didn't think of that!' Commenters on the post agreed that the woman had gone too far, suggesting that the person behind contact a flight attendant to remove it. 'Flight attendants would make her remove it. Just call them,' said one person. 'Aside from the inconvenience of not being able to use the tray table, it is also covering up the safety instructions. That's enough of a reason for the flight attendants to get her to remove the bag,' another agreed. 'I'd just ask her to remove it because I can't open my tray anymore. Maybe she literally didn't think of that. If that doesn't work, I'd tell a flight assistant to please take care of it,' said a third, more sympathetically. 'How is this allowed?' However, others had a more direct - though debatable less confrontational - approach. 'Or…. it's a plastic bag just tear out the back,' said one person. 'You absolutely can open it, ripping a plastic bag is easy,' another commenter agreed. 'How is this allowed? I would just rip it open from the back,' said a third. 'I would honestly try to move the plastic upwards just enough to uncover the tray. If that doesn't work, I'm ripping the shit out of it. Some people really have no consideration for others,' another said.

Mortifying moment Lady Gaga falls to the ground in front of fans in awkward concert blunder

Lady Gaga fell to the ground just inches away from fans during an awkward slip-up at her Las Vegas concert over the weekend. Pop superstar Gaga, 39, was performing Vanish Into You during Saturday night's Mayhem Ball show at the T-Mobile Arena when the mishap unfolded, reports The Sun. It began when one of her cameramen lost his balance after departing the stage and had to be steadied by a nearby security guard. Gaga calmly adjusted the crew member's equipment and continued walking – only to trip herself moments later. She managed to catch her footing and carried on singing, but stumbled again just before the word 'fly' and fell sideways near the edge of the stage. The moment, caught on fan cameras, showed the singer landing close to the front row, where audience members were watching from just feet away. One shared the clip to TikTok, writing: 'MY POOR MOTHER MONSTER FALLING DURING VANISH INTO YOU [crying emoji] AND THE CAMERAMAN JUST BEFORE.' Despite the tumble, Gaga was helped up and immediately resumed the song without missing a beat. The incident took place during the first week of Gaga's global tour, which launched on 16 July and will continue through to January with a final run of shows in Japan. It follows a series of stage mishaps involving other major stars. Beyoncé was recently left suspended mid-air during a Texas show when a red car she was performing in got stuck. During her performance of 16 Carriages, the superstar hopped into a red car which was then lifted high into the air using cables. She pulled on a silver cowboy hat and waved an American flag for her in-air adventures, yet was forced to halt the song as the vehicle leaned dangerously to one side. The crowd paused when she stopped singing and signalled for help, before erupting into cheers as the vehicle was lowered to solid ground. Like a pro, Beyonce continued the song then told her adoring fans: 'I wanna thank y'all, for loving me. 'If ever I fall, I know y'all will catch me.' Katy Perry, meanwhile, nearly fell from a giant sphere on her Lifetimes tour in Australia and later appeared to slip on a butterfly-shaped prop during Roar. She had climbed into the huge metal structure when it began tilting dramatically at a strange angle. An army of quick-thinking backstage crew members raced onto the set in Australia to steady the massive prop so Katy – who was clinging on to the sides – could climb down safely. With the backing music stopped, the crowd could be heard applauding the star and shouting 'go, Katy!' as she made her way out and onto the floor.
