Austin Hays' two homers power Reds past Mets
Matt McLain and Tyler Stephenson each hit two-run homers for the Reds, who have won five of their last six games.
The Mets, who have dropped four of six, took an early 2-0 lead, as Juan Soto homered in the first inning and Jeff McNeil had an RBI single in the second. New York also scored two runs in the ninth. Brandon Nimmo scored from second when right fielder Connor Joe dropped Ronny Mauricio's two-out liner and Luis Torrens had an RBI single.
Mets starter Sean Manaea didn't allow a hit until Hays homered leading off the fourth. The Reds went ahead in the fifth off Alex Carrillo (0-1), who got two quick outs before plunking TJ Friedl and surrendering McLain's two-run homer.
Hays hit another leadoff homer in the sixth to put the Reds up 4-2. The multi-homer game was his second of the season -- he also had two round-trippers in a 6-4 win over the Colorado Rockies on April 26 -- and the eighth of his career.
Stephenson also went deep against Carrillo with one out in the sixth, then De La Cruz collected a run-scoring single in the seventh and Hays drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth.
McLain and Stephenson finished with two hits apiece while Friedl was plunked three times.
Nick Lodolo (7-6) allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out seven over seven innings. The left-hander retired 17 of the final 19 batters he faced following McNeil's run-scoring single.
Manaea, making his first start and second appearance this season after battling a right oblique strain and a bone chip in his left elbow, gave up one hit and walked two while striking out six over four innings.
Nimmo and Torrens had two hits each.

Kansas City Chiefs star Rashee Rice insists he's 'completely changed' since his hit-and-run crash on a Dallas highway that was captured in a viral video last year. Rice is also being forced to pay $75,000 in pre-judgement interest and $12,000 in plaintiff attorney fees. The Chiefs are bracing for Rice to serve an NFL suspension. League spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement recently that the case 'remains under review.' 'My legal team is handling all that,' Rice said. 'All I can focus on is what I can control right now and that's me doing what I do.' Despite his looming punishment, Rice is looking to make a comeback following a ligament injury suffered in Week 4 - after colliding with Patrick Mahomes - which ended his entire 2024 season. The wide receiver underwent surgery to resolve the issue and has since been back in action during summer workouts. He continued: 'I feel 100%. I'm excited to be back out here with the guys. Just kind of basically where I left off at. 'The only thing is get back on the field and continue to have fun doing what I do.' Depending on the severity of his punishment from the NFL, Rice could be waiting a while longer to return to the field with his teammates. 'I urge everyone to mind the speed limit, drive safe and drive smart. Last and certainly not least, I am profoundly sorry for the physical damages to person and property. I fully apologize for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families.' Rice was renting the Lamborghini sport utility vehicle authorities said was one of two speeding sports cars that caused a chain-reaction crash on a Dallas highway in May of 2024. The occupants of the Lamborghini and the other speeding vehicle — a Corvette — left without checking on the drivers and passengers in the other four cars involved in the collision. A spokesman for the rental company, The Classic Lifestyle, said the Lamborghini rents for about $1,750 a day and is worth about $250,000. Police said the Corvette and Lamborghini were speeding in the far-left lane of North Central Expressway when they lost control. The Lamborghini went onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing a chain-reaction collision. Four people in the other vehicles were treated for minor injuries. The wide receiver was spotted at Chiefs training camp this week alongside Travis Kelce After his client was seen fleeing the scene of the accident, West said at the time that Rice would 'take all necessary steps to address this situation responsibly.' Rice, a member of the Super Bowl LVIII-winning Chiefs team, is from the Dallas area. He played for Southern Methodist University and grew up in the Fort Worth suburb of North Richland Hills. The 25-year-old has $3.5 million in career earnings and is slated to make $1.3 million in 2025. However, that salary will likely suffer if he misses any games due to suspension. The Chiefs had been thin at receiver and thus stood by Rice in 2024, after an injury to Marquise Brown during the first game of pre-season. Kings re-sign F Alex Laferriere to 3-year, $12.3M extension
August 3 - The Los Angeles Kings signed forward Alex Laferriere to a three-year, $12.3 million contract extension through the 2027-28 season, the team announced on Saturday. The new deal has an average annual value of $4.1 million. Laferriere, 23, played his second NHL season in 2024-25 and set career highs in a number of statistical categories, including 19 goals, 23 assists and 42 points. He also posted career-bests with a plus-22 rating, four game-winning goals, 193 shots, 43 blocks, 124 hits and 16:32 average ice time in 77 regular-season games. Rangers squirt past Mariners in 11 innings
August 3 - Wyatt Langford singled home the go-ahead run in the 11th inning as the Texas Rangers defeated the host Seattle Mariners 6-4 on Saturday afternoon. Kyle Higashioka homered and drove in three runs for the Rangers, who won for the first time in their past nine games at T-Mobile Park and pulled within a game of Seattle for both second place in the American League West and the AL's third and final wild-card spot. Langford's soft liner to right field leading off the 11th scored Adolis Garcia from second base. Ezequiel Duran followed with a broken-bat single to right off Casey Legumina (4-6) to give Texas a two-run lead. Rangers reliever Luis Curvelo (1-0), making his second major-league appearance, pitched 1 1/3 innings for the victory. The Rangers scored twice in the top of the 10th off Matt Brash to take a 4-2 lead. Higashioka blooped a leadoff single to center to score pinch-runner Duran. A bloop to right by Alejandro Osuna and a sacrifice bunt by Josh Smith put runners at second and third and an intentional walk to Corey Seager loaded the bases. Marcus Semien grounded out to short on a slow roller to score Higashioka. The Mariners tied it in the bottom of the inning on Randy Arozarena's leadoff blast into the second deck in left field. The Rangers took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Rowdy Tellez led off with an infield single and Higashioka deposited a 2-2 fastball from Luis Castillo into Texas' bullpen in left field. Merrill Kelly, making his Rangers debut after being acquired from Arizona at the trade deadline, allowed just one hit through the first five innings - an infield single by rookie Cole Young with two outs in the third. The Mariners tied the score in the sixth with the help of a mental mistake by Kelly. J.P. Crawford, led off with a ground-rule double into the right-field corner. With one out, Arozarena lined a single to center, sending Crawford to third. Trying to keep Arozarena from stealing second, Kelly committed a balk by disengaging from the pitching rubber three times. That allowed Crawford to trot home and Arozarena to advance. With two outs, Julio Rodriguez lined a double to right to tie the score. Kelly allowed two runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings, with no walks and six strikeouts. Castillo gave up two runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. He walked one and fanned four. --Field Level Media
