Gauteng's decade-old refurbishment project bears no fruit for Joburg CBD

Eyewitness News19 hours ago
JOHANNESBURG - More than 200 housing units in the inner city are unoccupied and vandalised since a refurbishment project by the Gauteng government in the inner City of Joburg started over a decade ago.
One of the six hostels owned by the province has been under maintenance on a budget of half a billion rand.
This week the MEC for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara and Joburg MMC for the department Mlungisi Mabaso visited the hostels including George Goch, Jeppe and Denver to monitor this progress.
The new hostel with single and double bedrooms is said to have been unoccupied for over thirteen years.
It has overgrown grass, sewage leaks, broken windows and broken-down cupboards in the units.
Several old dusty cars with flat tyres are parked outside.
Ward 65 councillor Nkosikhona Khanyile said the Department of Human Settlements is responsible.
'I think there was an issue between the contractor and the department, and they were both in court and they resolved that issue.'
He said even the courts have been unable to resolve the issue.
'In 2018, there was another contractor which was introduced, and it ran for only two years, and they also had the very same problem that the first contractor was having.'
The department said it plans to resolve these issues and resume maintenance work by December.

One cop robbed, another killed in Mpumalanga

One cop robbed, another killed in Mpumalanga A police sergeant died after being shot while responding to a business burglary near Komatipoort in the early hours of Saturday, August 9. Sergeant Lawrence Dumisani Mtshweni (47), who served in the Visible Policing Unit at Schoemansdal police station, was attending to a burglary in progress with colleagues when they were ambushed by about 10 armed suspects. During the attack, Mtshweni was shot in the upper body and rushed to hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries. Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli confirmed the sergeant's death. He had 18 years of service. 'An integrated team of intelligence operatives, Hawks, the provincial tracking team, and private sector units are working around the clock to apprehend the suspects,' said Mdhluli. The police are urging community members not to protect criminals but to provide information that could lead to their arrest. 'Attacking police officers is an attack on the state,' Mdhluli added. In a separate incident, on July 28, a police officer based at Nelspruit police station but residing in Bushbuckridge was robbed of his service pistol. The officer was walking towards his vehicle in the Bushbuckridge CBD around 19:00, after using public transport, when two men approached him from behind, overpowered him, and fled with the firearm loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition. Police opened a case and, following a tip-off, arrested three suspects, two men and one woman, on August 7. The woman was found in possession of the stolen firearm at her residence. The gun and three rounds of ammunition were recovered. The suspects – Fumani Avoid Mashego (19), Surprise Khoza (25), and Promise Thandi Mashego (23) – appeared briefly in the Mapulaneng Magistrate's Court on August 8. They face charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and ammunition. All three have been remanded in custody ahead of a formal bail application scheduled for August 15.

Fear grips Eesterust residents as a serial killer lurks

PRETORIA - The Eersterust community is living in fear after five women's bodies were found in the area. The police have charged Helder Isidro with murder, who is suspected of luring victims via social media, before killing them. Four of the bodies were discovered burnt, three were found between June and July 2025 and the fourth was found this past Monday, with the fifth being discovered on Tuesday. Police spokesperson, Brenda Muridili says they are still investigating if the man is responsible for the death of all five women. But the similarities in the way the women were killed show that it could be the same suspect. Residents are worried about whether police have the right man, fearing a serial killer on the loose.

Cape Town woman fatally shot ahead of 'Silencing The Guns' launch

CAPE TOWN - A 30-year-old woman was shot in Hiedeveld on the Cape Flats on Saturday. Two kilometres away, a Silencing The Guns launch was being held in Manenberg. Ironically, the event, which was held on Women's Day, is aimed at reducing gun violence in the region. While investigations continue, the victim's family believes she was killed as she was a witness in a gang-related murder case. She was killed in a drive-by shooting. Police officials say the police need to improve their intelligence. They say that they have found that some illegal guns enter the province via Namibia. Many of the guns are stolen from private security companies, while others are not reported to the state when the owners die. CPF, neighbourhood watches, and police believe that teaming up may help put an end to the violence.
