Cape Town woman fatally shot ahead of 'Silencing The Guns' launch

eNCAa day ago
CAPE TOWN - A 30-year-old woman was shot in Hiedeveld on the Cape Flats on Saturday. Two kilometres away, a Silencing The Guns launch was being held in Manenberg.
Ironically, the event, which was held on Women's Day, is aimed at reducing gun violence in the region.
While investigations continue, the victim's family believes she was killed as she was a witness in a gang-related murder case. She was killed in a drive-by shooting.
Police officials say the police need to improve their intelligence. They say that they have found that some illegal guns enter the province via Namibia.
Many of the guns are stolen from private security companies, while others are not reported to the state when the owners die.
CPF, neighbourhood watches, and police believe that teaming up may help put an end to the violence.

Heideveld community rallies against gun violence after tragic shooting of a witness

A 30-year-old woman was gunned down in Heideveld on Saturday morning — just a kilometre from Phoenix Secondary School in Manenberg, where police and community leaders were launching an initiative to 'silence the guns.' Image: Mandilakhe Tshwete THE 30-year-old woman shot and killed in a drive-by attack in Heideveld at the weekend was a key witness in a gang-related case. 'That might be the reason she was shot and killed,' said Manenberg Community Police Forum deputy chairperson Vanessa Adriaanse The shooting on 5th Street at about 11:15am, close to Phoenix Secondary School happened a kilometre away from the venue for the Western Cape police board's anti-gun campaign launch. The #SilencingTheGun campaign is aimed at raising awareness about the devastating impact of illegal firearms. Adriaanse said the shooting took place while community members, mostly women, were gathered for the campaign launch in honour of Women's Day. 'This is devastating, to think that we were launching the silencing the guns campaign where we mostly invited females because it's Women's Day. We wanted to acknowledge the women on the Cape Flats. We received a call while at the event that they had just shot and killed a female,' she said. She said they rushed to the scene. Video Player is loading. What must we do?' Western Cape police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie said the circumstances and motive of the shooting form part of the investigation 'Manenberg SAPS registered a murder case for investigation after a 30-year-old woman was shot and fatally wounded during a drive-by shooting this morning, Saturday, 9 August 2025, at about 11:15am in 5th Street, Heideveld. The suspects are yet to be identified and apprehended.' Police have appealed to anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS mobile application. Western Cape Deputy provincial police commissioner Luyanda Damoyi described the circulation of illegal firearms in the areas as 'tremendous'. 'Many of the firearms currently in circulation were once legally owned, but after certain incidents involving the owners, such as robberies at their homes, they became illegal. Some have been lost by security forces or stolen from security companies, and others from the South African Police Service. 'What we are doing now is taking measures to address this. We are regularly inspecting firearm licences held by owners. One area of concern is deceased estates. For example, if someone owned three firearms and then died, their family might not report this to the police. We have identified 1,502 firearms linked to deceased owners, and we are visiting those addresses. We have already recovered a number of weapons in different provinces.' Cape Times

SA's GBV terror: Many didn't celebrate Women's Day, but survived it

Call for protection of females as reported cases of scourge rise. While various Women's Day walks, marches and celebrations were hosted across the country over the weekend, many said more should be done to protect women, especially with the rise of gender-based violence (GBV). Highlights in Tshwane included more than 1 500 female law enforcement officers from Gauteng municipalities, who marched to the Union Buildings, re-enacting the historic 1956 march in which over 20 000 women protested against the extension of pass laws to women. The party's deputy spokesperson on police, Lisa Schickerling, said the scourge of GBV must be addressed and it must happen soon, adding South Africa was failing its women. 'Ekurhuleni recorded over 1 600 murders in 2024, with precincts like Primrose and Germiston ranking among the most dangerous in South Africa. 'Despite the crisis, many stations operate with inadequate critical staff and vehicle shortages, and gender-based violence victims are left without proper support,' she said. Shocking statistics Schickerling said it was no wonder that South Africa found itself in the midst of a gender-based violence crisis. Out of 1 154 police stations, only 134 have dedicated desks for GBV. Action Society spokesperson Juanita du Preez said every month in South Africa, an average of 320 women were murdered, 3 934 raped and 5 341 suffer grievous bodily harm. Du Preez said many women didn't celebrate Women's Day, but survived it. 'This is not just gender-based violence. It is a sustained, systematic assault on women. When a nation's women are attacked at this scale, it stops being crime – it becomes terror,' she said. Du Preez said the police crime statistics for 1 October to 31 December 2024 recorded 961 women murdered, which was 11 every day or 320 every month; 11 803 women raped, which was 131 every day and 3 934 every month, and 16 023 women assaulted, with 174 every day or 5 341 every month reported. 'These are only the reported cases. Thousands more remain hidden in silence, fear, or distrust of a system that too often fails them. 'By comparison, terrorism kills around 1 667 people per month globally. South African women alone face over 9 500 violent attacks every month – yet there is no war room, emergency deployment or national mobilisation.' ALSO READ: Women's Day: Lesufi wants your child to have a GBV-focused certificate Government's response is not enough Du Preez said South Africa had sexual offences courts, but there were just over 100 for the entire country – far below what is needed. 'Many are under-resourced, inconsistently staffed, or not fully operational. Rural and high-crime areas often have no access at all,' she said. Du Preez said Action Society wanted violence against women declared a national disaster, an urgent investment in public-private partnerships to strengthen investigative and forensic capacity, an expansion and permanent legislation of sexual offences courts in every district, with better-trained prosecutors and magistrates to prioritise GBV cases, and enforcement of mandatory minimum sentences and closure of legal loopholes. 'This Women's Day we cannot simply honour women with words. We must defend their right to safety and dignity with decisive action. Silence protects the predator, not the victim,' she said. KZN Department of Transport confirms two fatalities in cliff car crash

Two people were killed when a vehicle went off a cliff in KwaSwayimane, outside Pietermaritzburg on Saturday. Their bodies were retrieved on Sunday. Image: KZN Department of Transport The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has confirmed that two people died when a car went off a cliff at KwaSwayimane, outside Pietermaritzburg on Saturday. The bodies of a woman and a Grade 12 pupil were retrieved from the wreckage on Sunday after an aerial search was conducted to find the vehicle. The department said MEC Siboniso Duma sent a team from his office to visit the Shabalala and Madlala families in Ward 13, KwaSwayimane, outside Pietermaritzburg. The bodies of a woman and a Grade 12 pupil were retrieved from the wreckage on Sunday after an aerial search was conducted to locate the vehicle. Image: KZN Department of Transport 'This follows the unfortunate tragic accident that claimed two lives. It is not clear what caused a vehicle driven by Mama Anastasia Shabalala to reverse and inadvertently fall off a cliff. We thank a local teacher Ms Mbali Msomi who alerted Traffic Ambassador, Ayanda Msweli. We acted immediately by calling for the helicopter rescue team and reinforcement. 'We are saddened by the death of Mama Shabalala and Lona Madlala, a Grade 12 learner. Both were in the car. Mama Shabalala, a single parent, received this car last year as a gift from her children. Sadly she left us on Women's Day,' Duma said. Duma said the Helicopter Rescue Team worked under very difficult conditions to retrieve their bodies from the wreckage located more than 800 metres down the cliff. 'We thank Reverend Xaba and our Ambassador, Pastor Vidima for being with the families. I have mandated my office to arrange social workers to provide professional counselling service to the families.' THE MERCURY
