Opposition mounts pressure on AAP after spurious liquor deaths

The Hindu16-05-2025
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab faced intensified criticism on Friday (May 16, 2025) following the deaths of 27 people due to the consumption of spurious liquor. Adding to the embarrassment, one of its own MLAs, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, openly criticised the government, alleging the flourishing of various 'mafias' under its watch.
Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, a former IPS officer and AAP MLA from the Amritsar North constituency, took a sharp dig at his party leadership while addressing the media at Bhangali village in Amritsar. Referring to a similar tragedy in 2020 when 120 people died during the Congress regime, he said, 'Back then, Mr. Bhagwant Mann demanded a murder case against the then Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. Now, it is your government - live up to your words and take action against the guilty. Our government is a failure. Every kind of 'mafia' - land, sand, liquor - has become part of our party and is flourishing. I feel embarrassed.'
The Opposition seized upon the MLA's remarks to intensify their attack on the AAP government. Punjab Congress Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa said that Kunwar Pratap has again exposed the hollow claims of the AAP government. 'The liquor mafia is part of this government and running the show,' he said adding, 'If Bhagwant Mann has any morals, he should file an FIR for murder against Excise Minister Harpal Cheema and himself, just as he once demanded of others.'

Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla criticised the government's 'war on drugs' campaign, stating, 'The Punjab government's war on drugs has no connection with ground realities, otherwise this tragedy would not have occurred.' He demanded that the Chief Minister take full responsibility for the deaths and called for a high-level committee, supervised by a sitting High Court judge, to investigate drug- and liquor-related fatalities over the years and dismantle the network behind them.
BJP leader and Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing, Ravneet Singh Bittu, said Kunwar Pratap's revelations exposed the government's sheltering of criminals and drug smugglers.
Meanwhile, AAP supremo and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, along with CM Bhagwant Mann, launched the Nasha Mukti Yatra (Drug-Free March) in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district. Speaking at Langroya, Mr. Kejriwal asserted that the government had 'cracked the backbone of drugs' in Punjab and expressed optimism that the state would soon be free from the menace.

'Vote chori' helped Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav win, says BJP's Anurag Thakur

New Delhi: The BJP on Wednesday alleged large-scale irregularities in voter registration in Rae Bareli, Wayanad, Diamond Harbour, and Kannauj - constituencies of Rahul Gandhi , Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Abhishek Banerjee, and Akhilesh Yadav - and demanded their resignation from the Lok Sabha. The party claimed they won through " vote chori " and accused the Congress and its allies of running a campaign against the Election Commission to undermine the mandate of "honest and genuine Indian citizens" while compromising national security. BJP leader Anurag Thakur, in a slideshow presentation at the party headquarters, flagged alleged voter registration irregularities in Kolathur (Tamil Nadu) and Mainpuri (UP), demanding the resignations of CM M K Stalin and SP's Dimple Yadav for "rigging" elections. Oppn-backed BJP MP Rudy wins Constitution Club poll

New Delhi: The result of the high-profile 'BJP versus BJP' Constitution Club election is out, with BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy emerging victorious over his party colleague and former MP Sanjeev Balyan , but it also brought to the fore the caste lobbies and divisions at work within the ruling party. Rudy won the election by 102 votes over Balyan for the post of secretary (administration). Rudy, who has been at the helm of the Constitution Club for more than two decades, faced a challenger from his own party. A usual club election became high-profile because of the voters, more than the candidates involved. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Undo Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, along with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, came to vote in the afternoon and presumably supported Rudy. From BJP's side, Union home minister Amit Shah, BJP president JP Nadda and several Union ministers cast their votes. With some party leaders actively backing Balyan, Rudy's candidature appeared to be an 'anti-establishment' one and that attracted the entire Opposition to back him in the election. Live Events Post-victory, Rudy admitted that his panel has MPs and former MPs from all parties and voters voted across party lines. Among the different issues discussed at the INDIA bloc dinner organised by Kharge, Rudy's candidature was mentioned, and a consensus was reached to back him in the elections. Another dinner in support of Balyan took place at the residence of CM Ramesh where leaders from the southern part of the country gathered to support Balyan. Dubey was the face behind Balyan who claimed on Tuesday morning that Balyan will win. Sources from both sides told ET that it appeared that BJP's brass was behind Balyan and that made the election interesting. During counting, two BJP MPs from Western UP - Satish Gautam and Bhola Singh - stayed inside the counting room in support of Balyan. The election also pointed to the caste lobbies and divisions. With Rudy being a Thakur, it was evident that BJP leaders from the same caste were working for Rudy's victory, with some claiming that he enjoyed the support of a BJP regional satrap from his caste. Several current and former MPs from Bihar landed up in Delhi to vote for Rudy as some made it a 'Bihar Pride' issue. Lok Sabha Elections Redux This election was a postscript of the Lok Sabha battle where Balyan lost from Muzaffarnagar with BJP Thakur leader Sangeet Som openly opposing him. The club election was not expected to be on caste lines in the beginning. But with time, the play changed into a caste and state battle, something that the party has not been able to cover up in the recent past. BIHAR POLL TALKING POINT With Bihar polls approaching, the Opposition may try to present the fact that a person from the state, especially from the Thakur community, was sidelined by his own party in a club poll.
