
I went out in Cardiff on Friday night and had the best-tasting dish I've eaten in years
I found myself frantically trying to get more sauce into my mouth using only a fork — which made me look uncouth and desperate but it was worth it
We're lucky in Cardiff to be spoiled rotten for choice when it comes to the quality of restaurants and places to eat. It wasn't always this way — and it wasn't that long ago people were bemoaning how badly the city lacked good places to eat.
Now you can find half a dozen (at least) places with superb food in Cardiff Market alone. Then there's the city centre brasseries and neighbourhood Indian and Italian restaurants that have kept their loyal customers coming back again and again for years, the pop-ups serving lip-smacking street food from improbably small converted vans and the gastropubs being praised by national restaurant critics. And then you come to the "where to take someone on a special night out" level. Not so long ago, this category wouldn't have amounted to more than a small handful, now it's almost impossible to pick from the embarrasment of riches available.
On Friday night, I found myself in one of those restaurants for a birthday. I had never been there before. Even before walking into Mesen, the evening was off to a great start, having called into another place I'd never been before, The Rhiwbina Tap, for a drink before food. It was bustling and had a great selection of beers from several excellent breweries.
After a pint, I crossed the road to the restaurant for the main event. Mesen specialises in sharing dishes cooked over charcoal. If your eyes are already glazing over at the mention of "sharing dishes", resist the temptation to immediately stop reading this article — honestly, it's worth it!
The weekly food menu is written in chalk on a blackboard in the simply-decorated restaurant, where you can sit on stools at the bar, the room's focal point, or at one of the handful of tables around it. Mesen also has a good reputation for its cocktails and I'm told you might even get one mixed for you ad hoc at the bar if you ask — but the cocktail menu itself has plenty to choose from so there's probably no need to do that. The wine list is good too. But, anyway, the food.

The pleasingly short menu is bang on point, with dishes like "scallops, Marmite butter, black pudding" or "buffalo carrots, ranch, pickled celery, parmesan" immediately drawing comments at the table like "oh wow, that sounds amazing". The dishes are a fairly intuitive mix of small and large, meaty and vegetarian, so it's not too hard to choose a good mix of between four and six dishes, with staff on hand to advise anyway.
Our hardest decision was whether to go for "pig's head" or t-bone steak as the main dish of the night, and we deferred to our server who went for the steak (we should have thanked her for excellent choice, though I'm sure the pig's head would have been great too).

We also chose padron peppers with hummus (£8), the scallops with Marmite butter and black pudding (£13) and the buffalo carrots (£15). They were all superb. I eat about a wheelbarrow's worth of hummus every week and this still stood out. The black pudding came as crunchy crumbs, awash with the scallops in the moreish Marmite butter. And the carrots were massive, the size of chip shop jumbo sausages (I thought they were sweet potatoes when they first arrived).

But the stand-out dish was the prawns in garlic and chilli butter. That description in no way comes close to doing justice to how good they tasted. The prawns had that wonderful charred flavour from being flame-cooked but the sauce was out of this world, silky smooth and amounting to way more than the sum of its parts. Long after the prawns were gone I scooped at the sauce with my fork to get as much of it into my mouth as I could (which is not that much when you're using a fork). I considered ordering something else from the menu to scoop it up with. I think it's been years since I've eaten anything that tasted as good.

This deliciousness doesn't come cheap. Our bill for two (which included one chocolate cake dessert and a £45 bottle of wine) came in just short of £200. That's hefty. But it's the food I've been talking about enthusiastically ever since, not the bill.

It's been a while since I was in this vicinity, and it's odd how much my old stomping ground has changed in a short period of time. Grosvenor Street used to be the home of some rather middle of the road hotels, in contrastingly grand Georgian buildings. Now the street is monopolised by this 214-room place, from Ennismore - the people behind Gleneagles in Perthshire and Gleneagles Townhouse on St Andrew's Square. I'd say The Hoxton's branding is slightly younger than their Edinburgh sister. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Their main restaurant is Patatino - the Scottish-Italian trattoria, named after the Italian word for 'little potato'. It's on the ground floor and along a corridor past a few glossy cheeseplants, as well as a stylish and bustling residents' lounge. (Or maybe we went in the wrong door). Prepare for a visual overload, when you make it to the restaurant, which is inspired by sunny Sorrento and Amalfi. It has an open kitchen, with loud decor that looks like it's been designed by a crack squad of clashing pattern lovers - say Versace, in collaboration with the merchandising team from Anthropologie. There are walls covered in the best pieces of crockery, like it's a glamorous Nonna's house, and a plastic jungle's worth of faux flowers. In common with Gleneagles, the staff are patient, and so enthusiastic. I don't know how they stay so upbeat, this far into the Edinburgh Festival, but it's an impressive feat of endurance. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Our waiter asked if we wanted anything from the Nibbles list to start, but we had to pass. How are you still supposed to have room for lunch, after deep-fried spaghetti squares (£8) or slow-cooked brisket arancini (£9)? Still, we did say aye to a cocktail, and not purely because this baby pink take on an Amaretto sour had the excellent moniker of Solemn Pomace (£13). It's funny, because that's my pet name for my husband. For starters, we chose the Caesar salad (£11) and the beef carpaccio (£18). Both were great. The salad wasn't really a salad at all, but a whole baby gem that had been luxuriously anointed, like the wealthiest Egyptian pharaoh, Lettucekhamun, with cured yolk, whole anchovies and a flurry of Parmesan. It was a lovely combo, and what a way for a bit of shrubbery to go. Lettuce pray. There were feathery and velvety petals of pink meat fanned onto a creamy emulsion of Parmesan and balsamic, with a handful of rocket on top. Great start. For mains, they've kept the concept simple. There's pizza, pasta, or a smattering of meaty dishes, like whole sea bass or steak. We shared a couple of things, including the taglioni (£23), which was a little cold, and could have come with a bit more of the billed Amalfi lemon. However, the custard-coloured threads of pasta had a satisfyingly firm bite, and were clad in a rich shellfish bisque, with a large scoop of sweet and shredded Eyemouth crab on top. Gaby Soutar We also tried one of their pizzas - the haggis and nduja (£18), which seemed like a rather nice Scottish Italian partnership. We were given a heat warning, when it came to this option, as it also featured hot honey and Jalapeno. I was preparing to sweat, but this was easy - Portobello Beach in August, rather than Sardinian sands. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad It had a charred and billowy sourdough base, and there was plenty of mozzarella, with a judicious amount of the other toppings. Gaby Soutar We also had an unnecessary but pleasant side dish of charred tenderstem broccoli with toasted almonds (£6.50). For pudding, the tableside tiramisu sounded a bit theatrical and crepe Suzette-esque. However, it turned out that they just scoop a big dollop out and plop it in your bowl, while you observe. I'd worry that I'd make a sad face if it wasn't big enough, like when you buy a cake in a bakery, they choose the runt and your eyes fill with tears. Instead, we went for the roasted panettone (£8), which turned out to be a take on bread and butter pudding, with a syrupy soaked slab of this Italian bread. It came with rum and raisin ice-cream and a heap of sandy biscuity crumbs. We Out Here 2025 review: Gilles Peterson throws a damn good party
Music is only half the story here. This is a festival where you can stumble from a bass-heavy tent into a fine dining dinner. Food and drink offerings were as diverse as the crowd. Jerk chicken sat next to vegan Indian comfort food, and local producers such as Cranborne Chase Cider poured vintages from wooden barrels, while El Rayo's frozen margarita quickly became the unofficial drink of the weekend. For the hardcore foodies, the On Rotation pop-up restaurant was the place to be. They hosted three-course dinners curated by rotating chefs, soundtracked by their favourite records. The only snag? If you're in need of the toilet, you're forced to leave the stylish confines of the restaurant to find a stinky festival loo, because there wasn't a designated toilet. Not ideal mid-meal.
