Easy mistake to make. You pop out to post a letter in south Devon and wind up walking all the way to Berwick-upon-Tweed by the Scottish border.
That of course is the set-up of Rachel Joyce's highly emotional 2012 best-seller which has now become a musical about Harold Fry and his unlikely pilgrimage to make up with an old friend dying in a hospice 500 miles away.
Starring big huggable Mark Addy as the teetotal brewing rep who's devastatingly bereft, it takes time to, shall we say, 'find its feet' and spends a heart-warming first half massaging its plausibility.
But it does so with buckets of good cheer, sending Harold off with a big gospel number in a petrol station, before attracting an evangelical mob after his journey goes viral on Instagram. He even gets a shaggy dog puppet to go with his seeming shaggy dog story.
But the second half fairly knocked me out with a series of emotional roadside bombs. Nor will knowing they're coming protect you from their impact. Go armed with Kleenex.
With a rich seam of folk running through music and lyrics by Passenger (aka indie singer-songwriter Michael David Rosenberg), our hearts are stirred with barn dancing when Harold meets his wife (Jenna Russell) as a young man, but they're also broken as we learn the truth about their son (Jack Wolfe).
And it avoids mawkishness with robust wit, including a Slovakian doctor cursing her ex-husband: 'I'd no idea he was a father, when we left from Bratislava'.
Katy Rudd's production is prone to youth theatre excesses and outré flower-power choreography. But wearing its heart on its sleeve and keeping faith with Harold's bizarre mission is very much the point.
Russell as Harold's wife gets to censure him but also croon about her own bottled agonies with touching remorse. And where Addy's Harold looks like a leathery old rugby ball that's been kicked around a little too much, he too grows in stature as a character – step by step, song by song.
Shucked, by contrast, is a musical with little more than smutty jokes at its core, where it really needs a proper, pumping cardiovascular system.
A camp hit on Broadway, the remorselessly silly story about failure of the corn crop in Hicksville USA is non-stop gags. 'A grave mistake is burying grandma on a slope' is one of the best.
'A paper plane that doesn't fly is just stationery' is another. But writer Robert Horn is more interested in Carry On film sniggers.
The stand-out moment in Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally's music and lyrics is Somebody Will, gloriously sung by Ben Joyce as jilted farmer Beau. It's a rare moment fusing humour and pathos with originality and verve.
And as his inevitably named errant girlfriend Maizy, Sophie McShera is a pleasing cross between Ariana Grande and Dolly Parton, who falls for a devious 'corn doctor' podiatrist (Matthew Seadon-Young) who, in turn, owes money to the mob.
American director Jack O'Brien's production runs like a lusty threshing machine in a tilting barn, fringed by drooping maize stalks.
And Sarah O'Gleby's choreography, from the corn-tapping opener to the We Love Jesus hoedown, is inventive and energetic. The trouble is it's empty spectacle cheapened by a slew of facetious gags.
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry runs until June 14.

Great British Bake Off to return as trailer reveals hosts and judges lineup

The Great British Bake Off has dropped a trailer for its upcoming season of the hit baking show. A minute-long teaser for the Channel 4 reality programme was released on Wednesday (13 August), which features the voice of comedian Joe Wilkinson who takes the audience on a journey through space and time - and baking ingredients. In the trailer, hosts Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond can be seen as animated characters. "From it grew life, intelligent life, adorned in knitwear and leopard print,' Wilkinson narrates. After various shots of the big bang mixed with baked goods, the camera pans out of Paul Hollywood 's eye. 'Once there was nothing, and then there was Bake Off,' Wilkinson states. Prue Leith is not featured in the trailer, though Channel 4 confirmed she will be taking part.

TOWIE star Clelia Theodorou bravely shows her scars two years after breaking her legs in horror car crash which killed her beloved mother

Clelia Theodorou bravely showed her scars two years after being in a horror car crash. The former TOWIE star, 30, whose mother was tragically killed in the terrifying accident, suffered broken legs and feet which left her hospitalised in May 2023. Two years on, Clelia took to Instagram to share a heartfelt post with her followers. In the snaps, Clelia wore a chic white mini dress as she enjoyed a trip to the park with her daughter Cielo, who she shared with fiancée Tommy Cole. She penned: 'I'm really nervous to post this picture as I've been holding off posting anything showing my scars. I want to be completely honest, because as much as I'd love to say its fine and I'm getting on with it, it hasn't been fine and a lot I've had to work through physically and emotionally. 'My body changed overnight and with each surgery has changed further which has been hard to come to terms with. Its only been in the last few weeks I've actually braved having my legs out at all (that and this scorching heatwave). 'I have around 12 scars in total and I think it's time to just brave it and share them, because as much as they affect me I am walking again, able to have lovely trips to the park with Cici and start living again. All of which seemed impossible at one point but here we are walking around the park hand in hand, making memories. 'There's no making the scars disappear, and it's a lot of changes I'm trying to come to accept day by day. Some days are really hard, some days are easier.' She finished by saying: 'Trauma changes you both inside and out there's no denying that, but I want to be as transparent as possible with my on going recovery and how I feel and let you guys know its okay not to feel okay every day but good days like this are also round the corner.' It comes just months after Clelia shared a heartbreaking tribute to her late mum Gill on Mother's Day, two years after she was killed in the horror car crash. The reality star shared a poignant message admitting 'life isn't the same without you here' and her heart 'will ache forever'. The heart-wrenching caption was accompanied by a slew of black and white snaps to celebrate the special day, with one showing a little Clelia happily hugging her mum. In the same emotional Instagram post shared on Sunday, Clelia also showed gratefulness for her daughter Cielo, two, whom she called her 'greatest achievement'. She posted a throwback snap cradling the newborn, while others showed her sweetly sleeping next to the tiny tot as she kissed her. She penned: 'I'm really nervous to post this picture as I've been holding off posting anything showing my scars' 'My greatest achievement, my reason for everything thank you for making me a mum, my favourite chapter Cielo you are everything & more of what I ever dreamt you'd be,' she wrote emotionally. Remembering her beloved late, she continued: 'My beautiful muma, life isn't the same without you here. 'I miss you more each day, time isn't making it easier it's showing me more of what your missing my heart will ache forever 'Happy Mothers Day to all your incredible muma's.' Just earlier last week, Clelia revealed she was forced to undergo further surgery, two years after being left with 'serious injuries' from the horror car crash. Clelia took to her Instagram stories with snaps from her hospital bed while wired up to a drip ahead of her legs, which were both broken in the devastating 2023 accident, being operated on. The reality star, who welcomed daughter Cielo with fiancé Tommy Cole just seven months after the accident, told followers: 'Longest day ever, can't wait to go home to my babies'. She later reassured fans saying: 'I had another surgery today guys. Not an emergency or anything. Thank you for checking in'. Clelia then returned home and shared a snap of her bandaged foot following surgery which she pixilated, writing: 'Thank you for your well wishes,' Before adding: 'You guys are so lovely. At home and dosed up on painkillers'. Last year Clelia admitted that she may never have the strength to share exactly what happened in the horror crash. In an Instagram Q&A she shared harrowing pictures of her in hospital in recovery and told how it is still too 'raw' to discuss details of the accident. One fan asked her: 'Will you ever talk about your accident and what happened?', to which she replied: 'I'm not sure. I find it very hard to talk about. 'Maybe in the future I will but it's still really raw. Family and friends that know everything I can talk to, but talking about it to someone new and reliving it is so difficult.'
