'Derogatory' Remarks Against Amaravati: Journalist Who Hosted Show Arrested
Amaravati: Senior Telugu journalist Kommineni Srinivas Rao was arrested in Hyderabad on Monday for hosting a programme on a vernacular channel where a scribe allegedly made derogatory remarks against the greenfield capital city Amaravati, said a police official. Guntur district Superintendent of Police S Satish confirmed that Thullur police from Amaravati have arrested the journalist. "Thullur police have arrested Kommineni Srinivas Rao from Hyderabad over the derogatory remarks against Amaravati," Satish told PTI, adding that the journalist is being brought to Andhra Pradesh from Telangana. VVR Krishna Raju, the journalist, who was also part of the programme, was accused of spewing venom against Amaravati and its women. According to information shared by a source close to the TDP-led NDA government, the duo were booked under BNS Sections 79, 196 (1), 353 (2), 299, 356 (2) and 61 (1) and Section 67 of the IT Act, including Section (1) of the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. Meanwhile, YSRCP said that an FIR was registered against Rao four days ago in Thullur police station, accusing him of "failing to intervene during the broadcast", which featured those alleged vitriolic remarks. "Immediately after his arrest, Rao was transferred to Vijayawada. Rao, a senior citizen, questioned the legality of the arrest without explanation," said a note from the YSRCP. Condemning the arrest, YSRCP chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, called it a "political vendetta". "In any discussion, diverse opinions are natural. Punishing an anchor for guests' statements is not only unjust, it's dangerous," Reddy said in a post on 'X'. The former chief minister questioned the rationale behind punishing a moderator for remarks made by panelists during a televised debate, warning such actions endanger democratic discourse and press freedom. He accused the TDP-led NDA government of suppressing dissent, using fear and intimidation tactics to silence intellectuals, journalists, and opposition voices across the southern state. He alleged that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was "weaponising the state apparatus" to divert public attention from failures, corruption, and broken electoral promises. "You (Naidu) were given five years-one has already passed. The day will come when the people will demand answers for your abuses and injustices," Reddy warned.

Protests erupt over ‘derogatory remarks' against Amaravati women
Massive protests broke out on Monday across Andhra Pradesh following controversial remarks allegedly made against women from the Amaravati capital region during a live debate on a Telugu TV channel, recently. The remarks, aired during a panel discussion involving a journalist, V.V.R. Krishnam Raju, and moderated by journalist Kommineni Srinivasa Rao, have sparked outrage from political leaders, women's groups, and the public. The police arrested Mr. Srinivasa Rao on Monday in Hyderabad. Protest rally In Ponnur, a protest rally was organised under the leadership of local MLA Dhulipalla Narendra Kumar. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Narendra condemned the remarks and criticised the TV channel management, for allowing such statements to be aired. 'Even after being reduced to just 11 seats in the recent elections, YSRCP president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has not shed his arrogance,' Mr. Narendra said. He claimed that the TV broadcast was an intentional attempt to insult women who did not support the YSRCP in the elections. 'Forgetful of the fact that women are present in every household, including their own, they chose to demean women through such irresponsible commentary,' he added. The legislator also pointed to an earlier incident involving a political activist Kiran Kumar, who reportedly made remarks on social media and was later allegedly assaulted while in police custody by a former YSRCP MP. He demanded immediate action and accountability in the present case as well. Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker Kanumuru Raghurama Krishna Raju condemned the role of the panellists, asserting that journalists should uphold ethical standards. 'The ones expected to guide others on media ethics have themselves failed,' he said. 'Krishnam Raju spoke recklessly, while Kommineni laughed along — an equally serious offence. I have written to the DGP seeking immediate action,' he added. In Guntur's Arundelpet, the Telugu Mahila activists staged a protest outside the TV channel office, setting ablaze copies of the newspaper also owned by the management. Women protesters voiced anger over what they termed recurring attempts to defame the women of the Amaravati region. 'They called Amaravati a graveyard earlier, and now they stoop further. If such comments continue, the public will not remain silent,' a protester warned. Protesters demanded an unconditional apology from the TV channel and its leadership. 'If the organisation fails to apologise, women will respond appropriately,' they asserted.

Case against Jagan Reddy-owned news channel for derogatory remarks on women
Andhra Pradesh Police have registered a case against two Telugu journalists Kommineni Srinivas and VV Krishnam Raju, and the management of Sakshi TV, a regional news channel owned by YSRCP chief Jagan Mohan Reddy, for allegedly making derogatory remarks about women from the Amaravati region. The remarks, aired live on Sakshi TV on June 6, were reportedly made by journalist VV Krishnam Raju, who allegedly referred to the Amaravati region as a 'capital of prostitutes'.advertisementThe case was filed on June 9 at the Thullur Police Station in Guntur district under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Information Technology Act, and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The FIR includes offences under sections 79, 196(1), 353(2), 299, 356(2), 61(1)BNS, 67 ITA-2008, 3(1)(U), SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Kommineni Srinivas was arrested in Hyderabad, Telangana, and is expected to be brought to Vijayawada for further proceedings. Andhra Pradesh Assembly Deputy Speaker Raghurama Krishna Raju filed a complaint with the Director General of Police on Saturday, calling the televised remarks an affront to journalistic ethics and requesting that cases be filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code against Krishnam Raju, Kommineni Srinivas, Sakshi TV, and the programme Telugu Desam Party Member of Parliament Lavu Krishna Devarayalu lodged complaints with the Press Council of India and the National Human Rights Commission, urging an inquiry into the broadcast and demanding punitive Sunday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had issued a strong condemnation of the remarks aired on Sakshi TV. 'Ours is a culture that honours daughters. We belong to a society that reveres the feminine divine. This is our tradition — the essence of Indian life. Particularly among Telugu people, daughters and mothers are held in deep affection and high esteem,' Naidu said. 'In such a state of ours, making disgraceful and vulgar remarks about our mothers and sisters under the guise of political vendetta or media analysis is an unforgivable offence.'He further criticised the YSRCP for propagating what he called a 'toxic culture' through its media arm, and rebuked Jagan Mohan Reddy for remaining silent on the matter. 'It is even more distressing that a former Chief Minister, under whose own media channel these offensive statements were broadcast, has yet to denounce the act or apologise to women — a silence that is deeply troubling,' Naidu warned of strict consequences, declaring, 'Those who crossed all boundaries and wounded the sentiments of women in the name of a malicious conspiracy against the capital will face the strictest possible consequences. The derogatory and deliberate insults aimed at the women of that region — who protested against the previous destructive regime — are not just attacks on individuals, but an affront to womanhood itself.' He added that the National Democratic Alliance government would act decisively to protect the dignity of Andhra Pradesh Women's Commission Chairperson Rayapati Sailaja also condemned the remarks. She said, 'Those who insulted the women of Amaravati must be punished. No one should defend the derogatory comments made by Sakshi Media against the women of the capital. It is not appropriate to attribute caste and religion to Amaravati.'She accused the channel of spreading misinformation without basis. 'What wrong did the women of Amaravati do? Was it their mistake donating land for Amaravati? There is no justification for making insulting remarks about women under the guise of freedom of speech,' she said. 'Did the farmers of Amaravati say anything to Sakshi media? It is Sakshi media that has once again pushed Amaravati farmers onto the streets.'Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh also criticised YS Jagan Mohan Reddy in a public statement. 'How can your media house Sakshi insult women so horrifically? The false propaganda driven by hatred towards the self-respect of mothers and towards Amaravati is the peak of your degradation,' he said. Calling Amaravati 'the capital of the gods', he accused the former Chief Minister of seeking to defame the region. 'The NDA government will not tolerate any further attacks on the women of the state or their dignity,' he said, demanding an unconditional apology and promising that the alliance government would ensure strict punishment for those found guilty. advertisementIN THIS STORY#Andhra Pradesh
