While American major Tesla will showcase its Model Y, Vietnamese rival VinFast will drive in the VF6 and VF7, and South Korea's Kia will offer its much-anticipated Carens Clavis EV.
The rising interest from global majors comes as EV penetration in the passenger car segment jumped to 4.4 per cent in June 2025, up from around 2.5 per cent year-on-year, driven by government subsidies, according to the

Tesla's most affordable EV won't be a new model, but a stripped-down Model Y

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that the long-rumoured affordable electric car from the brand will not come as a brand new model, but a stripped-down version of the Model Y crossover, which was launched in India earlier this month. Tesla CEO confirmed this during a shareholders' call, following the company's first build in June and a planned launch later this year. The most affordable Tesla EV has remained one of the most discussed topics in the world automotive community. Making it more topical are the slumping sales numbers of the automaker. In the recent past, Tesla has been sailing through troubled waters. This has made the case for a more affordable Tesla EV stronger. The auto company already revealed it is planning to launch an affordable electric vehicle. Now, Musk's confirmation has ended months of speculation. It was widely speculated that Tesla would unveil its most affordable electric car in the first half of 2025. However, that didn't materialise. Now, with Musk's confirmation, it seems the unveiling is likely to take place later this year. However, Tesla has not revealed any specific timeframe. Also, this follows the cancellation of two cheaper projects, NV91 and NV92, in early 2024, as Tesla shifted focus to utilise underused Model 3 and Model Y production lines amid demand challenges. A stripped-down Tesla Model Y: Why is it important for India? The upcoming most affordable Tesla EV is expected to come with a less premium interior. It will come sans the luxuries such as rear screens and use cheaper materials. aligning with the EV manufacturer's strategy to boost sales without investing in new architecture. Such cost-cutting moves will help Tesla reduce the cost of the electric car significantly. While globally, Tesla has been witnessing a slowdown in its sales numbers, even in China, India could play a key role in boosting the carmaker's retail figures. In that case, the new affordable Tesla could be the OEM's best bet to grab a sizeable chunk of the country's electric car market. Tesla has already started business operations in India. The OEM launched its first showroom in Mumbai and is gearing up to launch another in Delhi. The Model Y is currently being offered in the Indian market as a CBU product. Expect the upcoming affordable model to be introduced to the Indian market as well when Tesla launches it. Check out Upcoming EV Cars in India. First Published Date:

Who is Ursula von der Leyen? President of the European Commission announces trade deal with US; calls it huge

Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission's president since 2019, is the first woman to hold the position. She was chosen by national leaders to lead the EU through difficult times, and the European Parliament elected her to a second five-year term. She will serve as the Commission's leader until 2029. She speaks on behalf of the Commission in meetings of the European Council, G7 and G20 summits, summits with non-EU nations, and significant discussions in the European Parliament and Council. Why is the EU head in news? Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump struck a 'good deal' on Sunday to prevent the bloc from being slapped by punishing tariffs, as both leaders praised it. The stakes were high, with a deadline of August 1st approaching and a $1.9 trillion transatlantic commercial relationship at stake 'Together, the EU and the US are a market of 800 million people. And nearly 44 percent of global GDP. It's the biggest trade deal ever,' she said in a latest tweet. The leaders agreed that the 27-country bloc will pay a baseline charge of 15 percent instead of the threatening 30 percent, which will be a relief to many European businesses. However, not everyone will be satisfied with the agreement. The EU, on the other hand, has promised to invest an additional $600 billion in the US and buy $750 billion worth of American energy. Trump was prepared to increase the 10% duty to 30% if an agreement could not be reached by August 1.

The newly launched Syros proved to be a game-changer, contributing 24,371 units to the H1 total. South Korea's second-largest carmaker, Kia, recorded its highest-ever sales in India during the first half of 2025, boosted by the successful launch of its new SUV Syros, as reported by the Korea Herald. According to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Kia sold 142,139 units between January and June, exceeding its previous H1 record of 136,108 units set in 2023 by 4.4 per cent. This marks a strong recovery from the sales dip experienced in 2024 and moves the company nearly halfway toward its 2025 full-year goal of 300,000 units in India, now the world's third-largest automotive market Kia's market share in India climbed to 6.4 per cent, up 0.6 percentage points from the previous year, ranking the automaker sixth in the country's private passenger vehicle segment. The launch of the Syros, a compact SUV, played a key role in the sales rebound. The Syros sold 24,371 units in H1 2025, following strong performances from Kia's other bestsellers such as Sonet SUV (45,277 units), Seltos SUV (36,883 units) and Carens MPV (34,056 units). With the help of Syros, Kia posted a 9.5% year-on-year sales increase in India during Q2 2025. In July, Kia expanded its line up further by launching the Carens Clavis, an all-electric model, amid growing EV competition from both domestic players and global entrants like Tesla. To support its growth, Kia has been scaling up local production and deepening collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to drive product development tailored for Indian consumers. All Kia models sold in India, with the exception of imported EV6 and EV9 SUVs, are manufactured at its plant in Andhra Pradesh. Since starting operations in 2019, the facility produced 1,482,490 vehicles by the end of Q1 2025, having passed the 1-million-unit mark in 2023.
