Five teens plead not guilty after charged in Kota Kinabalu Children's Court with abusive words against Zara Qairina
The charges against the five were read before Sessions Judge Elsie Primus in closed proceedings.
Deputy public prosecutor Nor Azizah Mohamad said that the charge against the was for acting with common intention, allegedly uttered abusive words directed at Zara Qairina, which were heard by the victim and could have caused her distress.
Elsie Primus allowed bail of RM5,000 against the five minors in closed proceedings and set the next date of mention to September 25.
The offence was allegedly committed at Block A-3-6 of the Rabiatul Adawiyah Dormitory at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan W.D.T 15, Papar, between 10 pm and 11 pm on July 15.
The charge was framed under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34, which carries a maximum jail term of one year, or a fine, or both upon conviction.
The lawyer representing Zara Qairina's family, Hamid Ismail, earlier said that a gag order has been imposed on the case under Section 15 of the Child Act 2001.
Counsel for the first accused minor, Datuk Ram Singhm had applied for the gag order, saying that the law provided protection for the child.
Zara Qairina was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu on July 17, a day after she was admitted.
The Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha student in Papar was found unconscious in a drain near her hostel at 4 am on July 16.
The Coroner's Court in Kota Kinabalu has since fixed Sept 3 to begin the inquest proceedings into her death.
Coroner Azreena Aziz set proceedings to run from Sept 3 to 4, Sept 8 to 12, Sept 17 to 19 and Sept 22 to 30.

Ling, 42, was reported missing on April 9 while on her way to MACC's headquarters to give a statement related to an ongoing investigation. MACC had opened an investigation into Ling and her husband, Thomas Hah, in May last year for alleged corruption and money laundering offences, with MACC chief Azam Baki previously stating that Ling was a witness in a money laundering investigation. 'We have recorded statements from 48 witnesses to date, including four MACC officers who were directly involved in investigating Ling,' Saifuddin told the Dewan Rakyat today. 'The investigation papers are being finalised before being submitted to the Attorney-General's Chambers.' He said the case is being investigated under Section 365 of the Penal Code, pertaining to abduction or wrongful confinement. Police previously said five vehicles were involved in the incident, three of which had used cloned number plates. About eight suspects are believed to have been involved in the alleged kidnapping, two of whom were seen in CCTV footage wearing police vests. In June, Ling's lawyer, Sangeet Kaur Deo, said one of the vehicles seen in CCTV footage of Ling's alleged abduction was spotted near the Thai border. Sangeet also said Ling's family was informed by police that they had been 'able to find nothing' when asked about the investigation into her disappearance.

Fake voice of Queen used in TikTok scam, warns Royal Press Office
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — The Royal Press Office (RPO) has detected a fake TikTok account using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to mimic the voice of Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia. According to a post on the official Facebook page of Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, the RPO said the video featured a voice resembling Raja Zarith Sofiah, allegedly promising financial assistance. 'The public is advised to remain cautious and not be easily influenced by such fake accounts, which are often used by scammers for fraudulent purposes on social media platforms. 'RPO wishes to stress that impersonation and misuse of identity are offences under the law,' the post read. MACC arrests govt officer over alleged bribes, RM50,000 sponsored trips; court issues four-day remand order
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 20 — A principal assistant director at a government department has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on suspicion of soliciting bribes and receiving sponsorships for overseas trips from several companies and individuals. A four-day remand order against the suspect, who is in his 40s, was issued by Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin at the Magistrate's Court here this morning following MACC's application. According to a MACC source, the man was arrested at about 6.30pm yesterday when he appeared to give his statement at the Putrajaya MACC office. 'Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect solicited and accepted sponsorships from various companies and individuals to finance his trips to several overseas destinations between March 2023 and January 2025. 'These trips were related to the Dubai Orchid Export Farm Project, estimated at RM125 million, with the total value of the sponsored trips exceeding RM50,000,' the source said. Putrajaya MACC director Azizul Ahmad Sarkawi confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009. In a separate case, a female insurance agent was remanded for her involvement in a fake investment scheme that deceived 22 investors out of RM21 million. The suspect, in her 40s was arrested at MACC headquarters in Putrajaya yesterday and remanded for five days until August 24. Preliminary investigations revealed the funds were never received by the cooperative, and the investors were given fake investment certificates.
