Tiny Love Stories: ‘He Watched My Father's Feet'

Young, Hungover and at Home With Each Other
The summer before 9/11, we were in Brooklyn — broke, sunstruck, hating our jobs, dreaming big, both aspiring artists. Most nights ended with fried chicken at an East Village gay bar. That's what led to this photo, taken after an all-nighter, on a bench in Tompkins Square Park. Josh, my gay best friend, gave me safety, humor and the kind of platonic queer love I didn't yet know how to name. We've lived through abuse, heartbreak, a studio fire, family deaths and cross-country moves — and we still talk daily. People don't say it enough: A gay bestie can save your life. — William J. O'Brien
Owen and the Dragon
I met my husband, Owen, at a party. We were both wearing St. George and the Dragon medallions — and took this to be a sign. Owen was brilliant but self-absorbed. I worked hard but was self-lacerating. Once, Owen joked: If he died in a car accident, I'd respond, 'It's my fault.' But if I died the same way, he'd reply, 'Who's Carole?' We both laughed; it was slightly true. We split after seven years. Recently, Owen died. I was moved to be included in his will. Owen hadn't forgotten me, and I knew his death was not my fault. — Carole Levin

NYC Summer Streets 2025 runs the length of Manhattan today. See the list of closures.

New York City's Summer Streets program takes over Manhattan on Saturday. The NYC Department of Transportation says city residents can traverse the length of Manhattan, from the Brooklyn Bridge to Inwood, for the first time in the program's history. The Summer Streets program has been expanding since it started in 2008. The popular city initiative, with events in all five boroughs this year, shuts downs streets to vehicle traffic and opens them to pedestrians and bikers alike on select Saturdays during the season. "The usual traffic noise and honking horns will be replaced by open streets teeming with walkers, bikers, runners, and performers. Discover a wealth of free cultural programs, performances, fitness classes, interactive art, giveaways, and much more as you experience the city in a whole new way," the NYDOT website says. Summer Streets 2025 continues in Manhattan on August 9 and 16, followed by Brooklyn and the Bronx on August 23. It kicked off last weekend in Queens and Staten Island. Activities are planned from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Summer Streets program is in addition to the city's "Open Streets" throughout the year. NYC DOT says Park Avenue, north of 125 Street, and most adjacent avenues will remain open to motor vehicles during Summer Streets in Manhattan. The following streets are closed Saturday at the NYPD's discretion, according to NYC DOT. Route: Rest Stops: Miscellaneous: Additional Locations:

Life in Shambles? Grab Your Passport and Follow That Mutt.

A DOG IN GEORGIA, by Lauren Grodstein There is a certain kind of midlife woman in literature, maybe you know the type: She is attractive, intelligent, generally beloved by friends and family. She is also secretly (or not so secretly) a mess — whipsawed by an unhappy marriage, an emptying nest or mere existential dread. Amy Webb, the vexed protagonist of Lauren Grodstein's tart, emotionally attuned novel 'A Dog in Georgia,' is one of those unlucky lucky ladies, a former chef whose well-ordered life — a handsome and affectionate husband, a sprawling East Village apartment, a stepson successfully sent off to college — is fraying badly at the edges. The husband, a charismatic bear of a man named Judd, spends long hours happily absorbed in the chic downtown bistro he owns and operates, and 19-year-old Ferris, now a Cornell sophomore, no longer needs his stepmother's constant care. That doesn't leave Amy much to do other than pick up fresh produce from the farmers' market, fret over her gentle German shepherd and gaze at her phone, a Möbius loop of unlikely animal-friendship videos — a baby goat cozying up to a donkey, a stray kitten nursed by a terrier — set to soothe. So when it appears that Judd has stepped outside their marriage again with a new and distressingly nubile employee (Amy is well familiar with her husband's susceptibility to the charms of pretty young women in his orbit; 15 years ago, she was one of them), she has a choice to make. She can stay and work through another infidelity, or file for divorce. Or she can fly to Georgia, the small, politically unstable country wedged between Russia and Turkey on the Black Sea, and locate a lost dog named Angel that she knows only from the internet. Before the flummoxed people in her life can stop her, Amy is on a plane to the capital, Tbilisi, ready to lose herself in a rescue mission so quixotic that even Irine, the woman who runs Angel's website, can't quite believe she's there. 50 Cent Denies Assisting JAY-Z's Alleged Son With Paternity Case: 'Keep My Name Out Of This Sh*t'

One thing about 50 Cent, he proudly takes ownership for whatever vindictive moves he makes as Hip-Hop's biggest villain. Thus, it came as no surprise that the 50-year-old rapper recently denied assisting Rymir Satterthwaite, Jay-Z's alleged son, with his decades-long paternity case. A YouTube account that brands itself as revealing, 'the truth behind celebrity drama, family secrets, and industry moves you were never meant to see' claimed that the G-Unit leader, 'personally reached out to Rymir and offered up his powerful legal team.' Fif caught wind of the accusation and addressed it via Instagram. 'Yo I never met this kid and I'm not helping him with anything,' he wrote in a now-deleted post. 'Keep my name out of this [sh*t] please.' The 'In Da Club' rapper never shies away from commenting on people's business, and has proudly been a thorn in Hov's side for years, so this type of act could be easy to pin on him. However, the Power executive producer is not willing to let that narrative fly. Satterthwaite, currently 31 years old, has been pursuing the Brooklyn rapper for decades, claiming that he was involved with his mother in the 90s, which led to his conception. Weeks ago, US Weekly obtained court documents revealing that Hov's legal team called Satterhwaite's lawsuit the latest effort in a 'decades-long harassment.' Satterthwaite has held firm and even accused the '99 Problems' rapper of attempting to suppress him from telling his truth. He claims Jay has taken advantage of the legal system to evade being held accountable. The Roc Nation leader has denied paternity in a variety of ways, namely via song. 'Billie Jean in his prime/ For the thousandth time, the kid ain't mine/ Online they call me Dad, kiddingly/ You're not supposed to take this Dad thing literally,' he rapped on 'Heard About Us' from his 2018 collaborative album with Beyoncé, Everything Is Love.
