RTÉ announce two-year broadcast agreement with FAI to show 15 men's FAI Cup fixtures
RTÉ have struck a broadcast agreement with the FAI to show 15 Sports Direct FAI Cup games over the next two years.
RTÉ2 will show six games in 2025 and seven fixtures across the 2026 competition.
This year's coverage will begin in the third round, followed by two quarter-finals, both semi-finals and the final at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday, November 9.
The 2026 competition will then see RTÉ broadcast from the second round all of the way to the final.
'We're delighted to announce this fantastic new broadcast agreement with RTÉ which will ensure the best ever coverage of Sports Direct Men's FAI Cup continuing their excellent coverage of domestic football," Sean Kavanagh, FAI commercial director, said.
"As the League of Ireland goes from strength to strength, 2025 is set to be the biggest year ever for the Sports Direct Men's FAI Cup and having coverage this year from the third round will help us tell the story even better with RTÉ2 & RTÉ Player television.
"RTÉ have a long history with the League of Ireland and Men's FAI Cup as the final has become a standout moment of the Irish sporting calendar which is set to continue with the help of their coverage over the next two years.
"With huge crowds at the Aviva Stadium over recent years, this broadcast agreement will ensure that the magic of the Cup will continue to be compelling viewing for the Irish public over the next two years.'
Declan McBennett, RTÉ group head of sport, added: 'The Sports Direct Men's FAI Cup has always proven to be the biggest draw of the domestic soccer season culminating in so many dramatic finals in recent seasons.
"The magic of the Cup prevails and we are delighted that our extended coverage and high-quality production standards will capture those moments for clubs and supporters alike.'

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND boss Heimir Hallgrimsson has encouraged his players to be excited by the progress they have made as they prepare for a new World Cup qualifying campaign. Ireland will bring down the curtain on this season's fixtures with a friendly in Luxembourg on Tuesday evening knowing that when they next meet up in September, it will be the hard currency of qualification points which will be at stake against Hungary and Armenia. They go into the game having won four and drawn one of the nine matches they have played to date under Hallgrimsson and the Icelander, who helped guide his native country to the quarter-finals at Euro 2016 courtesy of a famous last 16 win over England, believes they have established a momentum. Asked about replicating that excitement with Ireland, he said: 'I think it comes automatically. It comes because we are growing as an unit. 'It comes because we are saying the same thing over and over again – probably boring for the players to listen to because we are saying the same thing over and over – and I have said before, basics first before details. Basics before details. Advertisement 'The excitement comes from that. We can feel that we are growing every time we play, like how comfortable we were against Senegal. 'That's one step taken. We can have the same against Luxembourg, so it shouldn't be up and down performances, it should be consistent performance. That is what we need.' Friday night's 1-1 draw with Senegal, who are ranked 41 places above Ireland by FIFA, in Dublin was a creditable result, but Hallgrimsson and his players would dearly love to go into the competitive games with a another victory under their belts. However, they know from painful experience that Luxembourg are no longer the push-over they once may have been having lost 1-0 to Luc Holtz's men in a World Cup qualifier at the Aviva Stadium in March 2021. Hallgrimsson, who has drafted Stoke defender Bosun Lawal into the squad, said: 'They have shown in the past how quickly they have developed as a football team. 'They have had the same coach for a long time, really consistent in team selection, so it's more like playing a club team. Their knowledge of the team and each other is really at a high level. 'I watched the Sweden game when they played here – they beat Sweden 1-0, they could have scored more goals against Sweden. I know a little bit about them, and the strength of Sweden, so I wouldn't look at it as a shock to the nation if we would not get a good result here. 'It's that good a team that a win here would be really good for us at this stage. I hope nobody is taking them lightly, if that is the right word to say.' That said, that night in Dublin was a dark one for Irish football and then manager Stephen Kenny – they won the return 3-0 to restore a measure of wounded pride – although defender Nathan Collins does not want to dwell on the past. He said: 'It's just football, isn't it? football changes, people change, managers change, teams change and you just have to reflect on that. 'It is about what works for us now, and we can't have that on our mind. We are here with fresh faces, it is a fresh game, it is a new game.'

Mark English smashes Irish record to win 800m in the Netherlands in stunning fashion
'It's a brilliant day,' he said. 'I always wanted to get the win and run 1:43 – I managed those two things today.' His time brought him home well clear of France's Yanis Meziane and Australia's Peyton Craig, who both clocked 1:44.32, with English making up huge ground over the final 200m, having sat off the pace over the first 400m, which was covered by the pacer in 49.20 seconds. His time smashed the Irish record of 1:44.34 which he set in Bydgoszcz, Poland last month, English scoring his second victory of the season at a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting. He will race next over 800m on Thursday night at the Oslo Diamond League, where Rhasidat Adeleke will also be in action over 400m. 'It felt great,' he said of the win in Hengelo. 'I just wanted to run that race like a semi-final and I managed to do that. I stayed off the pace early and when I got to 600 I felt really good. 'I could see them fading and when I'm in good shape, I can always understand what the commentators are saying and I could hear him say there would be some tired legs in the home straight, it was nice to hear that. I thought I could catch them with about 80 metres left.' English won his fifth European medal back in March, a bronze at the European Indoors in the Dutch town of Apeldoorn, and he has improved his fitness since following a five-week block of training in Flagstaff, Arizona. 'I went away training at altitude with my coach Justin Rinaldi, that went really well,' he said. 'All these times and wins take a massive team so I do want to thank everyone who helped me get here today. So many people have helped me achieve that.'

Mark English makes more history with 800m win in Netherlands
Mark English has become the first Irishman to break 1:44 in the 800m, lowering his own Irish record for the second time in 11 days with a brilliant run at the FBK Games in the Netherlands. English got home in 1:44.34 at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting in Bydgoszcz, Poland last Friday week. That performance was an improvement on his previous record (1:44.53) which he set in June 2024 at the Continental Tour meeting in Madrid. On Monday evening, he clocked 1:43.92 to take victory and make more Irish athletics history. It's been a fine year for the 32-year-old Donegal man. In March, he claimed European 800m bronze, a result which now sees him trail only Sonia O'Sullivan in Ireland's all-time medal tally at major championships. English has never failed to medal when making a European final, indoor or outdoor. He has four bronzes and a silver to his name, with his runner-up position achieved at the European Indoors in Prague a decade ago.
