Laurian Johannes-Haupt feels when she faced up to the mighty Black Ferns haka at the Women's Rugby World Cup back in 2010, the women's game was virtually unrecognisable from the high-impact professional sport it has now transformed into.
The Springbok Women's assistant coach is the embodiment of the change within the game after the 40-year-old swapped her classroom at Athlone High School in Cape Town for a Bok tracksuit on a fulltime basis at the beginning of the year.
Johannes-Haupt can now focus all her energies on preparing the Boks for their all-important clash against the Black Ferns XI in her hometown when the traditional rivals meet at the historic Athlone Stadium on Saturday.
'We played them in the 2010 World Cup and from where the game has gone to, there's been massive, massive improvements,' Johannes-Haupt said, on the sidelines of the Boks training at UCT on Monday.
'The game has evolved so much. The Black Ferns come with a special skill set. Their skill set is really unmatched. They play from all over the park.
They have a good set piece as well. We're in for quite a good game and I think we're going to give them a good show.'

The Black Ferns are six-times world champions and will be one of the favourites to raise the trophy a seventh time when the Women's Rugby World Cup gets underway in exactly 30 days in England next month.
The Kiwis have therefore sent a second-string squad to face the 12th ranked Boks.
Johannes-Haupt feels this is no less a challenge with plenty of the Black Ferns squad in Cape Town boasting Test-match experience.
'It's not the regular players, but there are quite a few capped Black Ferns in their team, as well as a few Sevens players of the Black Ferns,' she said.
'We're preparing for a proper physical encounter because we've watched their previous games, we know what to expect and we're just going to do what we need to do for the game to be successful.'
The Bok Women have been preparing steadily themselves for WRWC25 with two hard-fought Test matches against No 2 ranked Canada leading up to the clashes with the Black Ferns.

The home team showed significant improvement in the second Test, especially at the breakdown where they stalled the momentum of the Canadians.
'We definitely want to get better at the breakdown. The first game against Canada, we weren't that good at the breakdown,' Johannes-Haupt said.
'Second one, we came out sharper and now we just want to carry on with that trend going into the Black Ferns game.
'Our transitional play could also be better and that's what we're going in for. We want to transition better and want to play a more attacking brand of and finishing it.
'We definitely want to give it our best showing and want to take our good positives going into the World Cup because it's all part of the prep for the ultimate goal, the World Cup.'
The Boks' chances have been boosted with the return of influential lock Vainah Ubisi, who was nominated for SA Rugby Women's Player of the Year last year, after her recovery from a serious knee injury. Johannes-Haupt feels Ubisi's contagious positive spirit has also rubbed off on the rest of the squad.
'She (Ubisi) was beaming. Beaming with excitement just to be able to be back on the park,' she said.
'Firstly, she's been waiting a long time to get back and she's been doing well. It's good to see her back in form and there's still a road ahead of her, but she's good to go.
'It's always special to have our younger ones back. She's like 23 years old. She's built a lot of experience from the WXV to where she is now, so to transition her back into the game is just special and everybody just loves having everyone around, so it's good vibes all the way.'

Where is former Springboks coach Heyneke Meyer?

Heyneke Meyer is one of the most celebrated coaches in South Africa, having been the first South African coach to win the Super Rugby trophy. With nearly 30 years of experience coaching professional teams, the Mbombela-born coach has secured multiple trophies, including the 2007 Super Rugby trophy with the Vodacom Bulls. After coaching youth and school teams, Meyer rose to the position of head coach for the SWD Eagles in 1998, where he led the team to strong performances in the Currie Cup. He also served as the forwards coach for the Stormers and Emerging Springboks in 1999. In 2000, Meyer joined the Bulls, guiding them to four Currie Cup titles and a historic Super Rugby title in 2007, making him the first South African coach to achieve this feat. The Bulls also became the first and only team to lift the Super Rugby title at that time. After losing the 2007 Currie Cup semifinal against the Free State Cheetahs, Meyer left the Pretoria franchise. On June 30, 2008, he was named head coach of the Leicester Tigers in England. His tenure was short-lived after he took compassionate leave to attend to family matters in South Africa after just 15 matches. The South African coach subsequently stepped down from his position on January 28, 2009 and later took up an executive role with the Bulls. In January 2012, Meyer was appointed head coach of the Springboks on a four-year term, taking over from Peter de Villiers. During his time, the Springboks played commendable rugby but were often dominated and outplayed by the All Blacks during their golden era. Meyer coached the Springboks in their first-ever game against Japan in the 2015 World Cup. The Brave Blossoms produced one of the biggest upsets in rugby history by defeating the Springboks 34–32 with a try in the corner deep into injury time. Following that match, Meyer faced criticism for favouring 'experience over talent' and was required to issue a public apology to South Africans after the embarrassing defeat. After losing to the All Blacks in the 2015 World Cup semifinal, he expressed a desire to continue as coach, but many opposed the extension of his contract. After departing from the Springboks, Heyneke Meyer took on the head coach/director role at Stade Français in the French Top 14 for the 2018–2019 season. As of mid-2025, Heyneke Meyer serves as the Director of Rugby for the Houston SaberCats in Major League Rugby (MLR), a position he has held since July 2021 and is contracted through the end of the 2025 MLR season. The 57-year-old coach recently said he desired to return to South Africa once his contract expired. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Proteas' Rickelton targets T20I breakthrough ahead of Australia series

Ryan Rickelton says he is ready to seize his opportunity as T20I opener when South Africa face Australia in a three-match series starting on Sunday. Photo: AFP Image: AFP Proteas batter Ryan Rickelton aims to cement his spot at the top of the order in the T20I side during the upcoming three-match series in Australia, as the Proteas look to find a settled squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Rickelton, though he has secured a place as an opener in the Test and ODI squads, is yet to make a mark in the shortest format, having scored only one half-century in 13 innings with an average of 20. However, the left-handed batter has all the shots and batting tempo to succeed as a T20I opener, as proven in the SA20 and IPL earlier this year. Coach Shukri Conrad has also backed Rickelton, making it clear that he will open the batting in Australia. 🇿🇦✈️ The Proteas Men are headed Down Under! Next Stay Close ✕ The 29-year-old told the media on Wednesday that, whether he opens with 19-year-old Lhuan-dré Pretorius or Aiden Markram, he will not change his natural brand of cricket, as it fits the vision of the current T20 side. 'I can honestly say I'm still trying to establish myself in the T20 side. From my own personal point of view, luckily enough, there is experience around me within T20Is, such as Aiden and Rassie,' said Rickelton. 'I don't think there'll be any expectation for me to change anything in what I've been doing these last two years. It's just an opportunity for me to hopefully claim that opening spot for the South African side going into the T20 World Cup and beyond. 'So, definitely not trying to change the way I play. I think the way the team is structured, it fits the mould and how they want me to play, too. "So, pretty comfortable with what's required. Always looking to take or make that first punch and get the side off to a good start, no matter who's alongside me at the top.' The Proteas will face Australia for the first time since they beat them at Lord's in the World Test Championship final in June. Rickelton said the squad takes confidence from that result, despite the change in format. 'It is a different format, but I think the Lord's victory instilled belief not just within the group, but within the wider cricketing community in South Africa. It definitely gives us confidence that we can do these things we speak about and dream about,' he said. 'It's a different format, a crazy format — anything can happen, and the game can change in the space of a few deliveries. 'So, we're looking forward to trying to take momentum from a few months ago, especially with the guys coming back as well, and trying to win a series here in Australia.' Rickelton, alongside Kagiso Rabada, Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs, returns to action for the first time since the WTC final, after being rested for the tour to Zimbabwe. The southpaw revealed that, while they may not have understood the reason for the break at first, they now feel refreshed and hungry to return. 'It's been a few of us who've been on the road for quite a period of time, and before the break comes, you might not really be looking forward to it or understand the need for it. But I think, looking back now, it was really beneficial to me,' said Rickelton. 'I chatted to the guys who've been on break — Aiden, Tristan, Marco, KG — they look really chuffed with life. KG's raring to go again. Aiden looks like he's got that spark in his eye again. He's keen to get going as well. 'So, it's important to just have that switch-off. The exposure you have to cricket can be a little bit too much sometimes. So, to be able to step out is quite nice. 'And if you look at the rest of the year, all the way through to the end of the IPL next year, it's pretty packed — not just for the five of us, but for the collective group as well. 'So it's important to have that break, and the five of us are very chuffed with it. I'm very chuffed with it. And like I said, we're happy to be back and really ready to go.' The Proteas will play three T20Is and three ODIs in Australia, with the first T20I set to get underway on Sunday, 10 August.

Moses Mabhida Stadium to undergo major refurbishment over the next 30 months

The Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban is set for a comprehensive refurbishment costing R284 million, with an expected completion date in 2027. Image: Doctor Ngcobo / Independent Newspapers The refurbishment of Moses Mabhida Stadium (MMS) in Durban is expected to be completed in another 30 months, costing an estimated R284 million. The request for the extension of the contract to conduct emergency remedial work on the concrete and roof structure for MMS was noted at the Community Services Committee (CSC) on July 17. The refurbishment of the MMS started on March 28, 2024, and is due to end on September 28, 2025. However, the municipality stated that some projects were delayed as priority was provided to foundation packages that are the backbone, while the remaining packages envisaged for completion in 2025/2026 and 2026/ 2027 financial years. Next Stay Close ✕ On May 31, 2025, the city aimed to extend the contract for 30 months due to the identified structural complications and risks. According to the CSC report, the extension of the current scope to complete the original work packages, but focusing on lists that were subject to further testing and were dependent on completion of the foundation packages, is: PROPOSED BUDGETS Civil: MMS structural steel painting - R19 million Electrical: sky car upgrade - R25 million Civil: infrastructure upgrade, expansion joints - R35 million Civil: infrastructure upgrade cables and canvas roof system - R135 million Lighting: upgrade - floodlight to LED - R55 million Civil: replacement of arch cladding MMS - R2 million Upgrade of audio visual system - R6 million Big swing upgrade, zipline, and adventure walk - R4 million Viewing platform - R2 million In a statement earlier this month, the municipality stated that the refurbishment project at the MMS is progressing well. The upgrades to the iconic stadium, which has been in operation for 15 years, have been strategically phased to minimise disruptions to scheduled activities and public access. The committee acknowledged the importance of completing the remaining work within the revised timeline and emphasised the need for close monitoring to ensure that the project meets both quality and compliance standards. The renovation will also see the introduction of the following new features to ensure the stadium remains a premier tourist destination: New Viewing Platform with 60% increase in floor area featuring a cantilevered glass floor for an 'Air Walk' experience. New Sky Car with increased travel time, which will be accessible to people with disabilities. New Big Swing with improved access to the launch platform. New Zip Line, which ends at the People's Park. Compression Ring Walk, which provides panoramic views with a sea-facing bungee jump option. The municipality stated that the refurbishment not only secures MMS as a premier venue for sports, concerts, and cultural events but also contributes to local job creation, skills development, and small business support through the procurement of services from local contractors. Despite the renovations, the stadium has successfully hosted several high-profile events, including the 2025 Nedbank Cup Final and the Toyota Cup between Kaizer Chiefs and Asante Kotoko on July 26, 2025.
