Celtics' Brad Stevens Says Jayson Tatum Progressing Well, But Won't Return Until 'Fully Ready'
When Jayson Tatum ruptured his right Achilles tendon in the Celtics' conference semifinals loss to the New York Knicks, everything about Boston's immediate future changed. But what won't change is the Celtics front office's prudence in making sure he has the space and time to make a full recovery.
Boston president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said the All-Star is progressing well following surgery last month. But asked about whether the team had put a potential timeline on Tatum's return, Stevens was definitive that there would be no rushing the star's rehabilitation. 'We don't and we won't,' Stevens said Wednesday night following the first round of the NBA draft. 'We won't put a projected timeline on him for a long, long time. … It's baby steps right now. He's actually progressed great, but I don't know what that means in regard to projected timelines. But that will be in consultation with him … and everybody else to make sure when he hits the court he is fully ready and fully healthy. And that will be the priority.'
Tatum is expected to miss most, if not all, of next season. It has already had implications for next season, with the team opting to trade Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday – both key contributors from the 2024 title team – in an effort to get the team's salary under the luxury tax second penalty apron. But Stevens said All-Star Jaylen Brown has already been back to the Celtics training facility since he had minimally invasive surgery to clean up his right knee. 'Brown is doing some light ball handling and work around the rim,' Stevens said. 'We said be ready for training camp and I think he'll probably be going full well ahead of that,' Stevens said.
While Stevens said league rules wouldn't allow him to address the pending trades of Porzingis or Holiday, he said anything they do this offseason is with an eye toward regaining flexibility after multiple seasons with a high payroll. 'As far as whatever moves that those are a apart of, they're all separate and hard and things that you're going to have to do your best to make sure you put yourself in the right positions,' Stevens said. 'We knew this was coming. This isn't a huge surprise. … The biggest thing for us is making sure that we balance that maximizing what we can with regard to what we bring back so we can continue to build and grow.'

Dietrich Enns Throws 5 Scoreless Innings in Return to Majors as Tigers Beat A's 8-0
Dietrich Enns pitched five scoreless innings in his return to the majors as the Detroit Tigers beat the Athletics 8–0 on Thursday. Enns (1-0) gave up a single and two walks in his first game since he threw two scoreless innings for the Tampa Bay Rays against the Miami Marlins on September 24, 2021. The 34-year-old pitched for the Seibu Lions in Japan from 2022–23 before going 13–6 last season for the LG Twins in South Korea. Jeffrey Springs (5-6) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks in five innings. Spencer Torkelson and Gleyber Torres homered for the Tigers, while Zach McKinstry had three hits, including a double and a triple. Torkelson, who came into the game hitting .193 with nine homers in his past 54 games, led off the second with his 17th home run of the season. Jahmai Jones hit a two-run double to put the Tigers up 3–0 in the third. Torres hit a two-run homer to make it 5–0 in the seventh. McKinstry hit a two-run triple in the eighth and scored on a sacrifice fly. Messi and Inter Miami stars prepare to face former coach Luis Enrique and PSG in Club World Cup
Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and their Inter Miami teammates took the field at their practice facility Thursday for another training session. There wasn't much different about what they did: dribbling drills, some laughs, interactions with coaches. But this training was more important than most. In a few days, Inter Miami will play one of the biggest matches of its five-year club history when the Herons take on French juggernaut Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup round of 16. The storylines will be plenty. Inter Miami will be a heavy underdog against Paris Saint-Germain, winners of last month's Champions League final in a 5–0 thrashing of Inter Milan. It will be uncharted territory for Messi, who rarely has in his decorated career entered a match as anything other than the favorite. It will be the first time Messi faces his former club since his exit from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023 after two seasons. He also will be facing his former Barcelona coach, Luis Enrique, now the coach of PSG, who has had a big influence on Messi and several Inter Miami stars. Messi was coached by Enrique for three of his 17 seasons with Barcelona. The Spanish coach led Barcelona from 2014 to 2017. He won nine titles, including two La Liga trophies, three from Copa del Rey, and one Champions League. Messi, Suarez, and Brazilian star Neymar played together under Enrique for three memorable seasons, forming the famed MSN trio that combined for 364 goals and 173 assists. 'He has been very important to my career,' Suarez said of Enrique, 'what I learned from him and just being around him. I had a competitive DNA before I played for him, but he upgraded it even more.' Miami's Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets also played for Enrique, and coach Javier Mascherano considers him a great friend. 'I have said this many times, but Luis Enrique is the best coach in the world,' Alba said after Miami's draw with Palmeiras on Monday, 'not only just as a soccer coach but also in the way he manages the whole group, which is spectacular. He's a phenomenon. We'll meet him and hug him, but when the referee blows the opening whistle we're going try to beat him, which is what all of us here are trying to do.' Mascherano, 41, also played alongside Messi, Suarez, & Co. when Barcelona won the treble under Enrique in 2015. 'I have a special relationship with him,' Mascherano said. 'I have a special relationship with his family. Obviously it will be very special facing him. It will be an honor for me facing a great coach. One of the greatest coaches I've had in my career.' The knockout stages of the Club World Cup begin Saturday, and Inter Miami's showdown with PSG is Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Despite entering the tournament on somewhat of a slump, Miami became the only Major League Soccer team to advance to the Club World Cup round of 16 after playing Palmeiras to a 2–2 draw earlier this week, finishing runner-up to the Brazilian club in Group A. That was after the Herons secured a 2–1 victory over two-time European champion Porto on a trademark free kick by Messi, who, along with his longtime teammates, has driven Miami's belief that it can make a statement on the global stage. Suarez noted how important advancing to the knockout stage was for the club's trajectory, but the Herons know the odds for Sunday's matchup. They know they'll be the underdogs. They insist they're ready for the challenge. 'Now that we are facing likely the best team in Europe – the Champions League champion – we will try to maintain the same commitment and unity and play a great match,' Mascherano said. 'If there is something this sport has proven is that anything can happen in any match. And who's to say that Sunday will not be our day. Sometimes things happen.'

NHL, NHLPA Close to Agreeing on a New Collective Bargaining Agreement, AP Sources Say
The NHL and NHL Players' Association are close to an agreement on an extension of the collective bargaining agreement, two people familiar with negotiations told The Associated Press on Thursday. The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been finalized. The league and union have been in talks since April and are on the verge of a memorandum of understanding done more than a year before the current CBA expires. The extension would provide extended labor peace in the sport that has had multiple work stoppages – including the 2004–05 lockout that wiped out an entire season – over the past three decades. Going to an 84-game regular season, up from 82, and reducing exhibition games to four per team is believed to be among the changes that could be announced as soon as Friday in Los Angeles before the first round of the draft. A playoff salary cap and shorter maximum contract lengths have also been among the reported topics. Daily Faceoff was first to report a pending announcement of a new CBA. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh foreshadowed a quick conclusion to this process, speaking at the Stanley Cup Final earlier this month. Bettman said the sides were 'in really good shape, having really good discussions,' and Walsh added that 'talks were moving forward and I feel good with where we are.' A full new CBA would be the first since 2013. The league and the union have been working on the memorandum negotiated in 2020 to finish that season during the pandemic and would meld that agreement with the framework from 12 years ago.
