Reddam House Waterfall and Curro Waterfall learners step up for self-discovery during winter recess
TPA is a globally recognised NPO programme that encourages young people to develop skills, volunteer, stay active, and step outside their comfort zone. It provides a structured framework for learners to formalise their mandatory extracurricular activities, such as skills development, physical activity, and community service.

Over five action-packed days, the learners participated in a series of community service initiatives aimed at empowering both the youth and the communities they served.
The programme, facilitated by TPA, saw learners work with local NGOs in Midrand – including The Society for Animals in Distress and Friends of Free Wildlife.
Vejay Reddy, TPA award leader at Reddam House Waterfall, said tasks ranged from clearing overgrown animal enclosures and restoring a bat aviary, to sorting and cleaning hundreds of dusty birdcages. 'The most heart-warming moment came on day five, when learners woke at 05:00 to prepare Spanish chicken and rice for 300 under-resourced children at the Ivory Park Community Centre. From lighting fires to chopping vegetables and dishing every meal by hand, our students handled it all.'
Parents joined in the cooking efforts, adding energy, warmth, and encouragement as meals were served with smiles to the children of Ivory Park. Reddy said the learners gave with heart, and walked away with life lessons they will carry forever. 'The programme was not just about service; it was about self-discovery, teamwork, and real-world impact. Our learners showed resilience, compassion, and leadership.'
Grade 11 learner from Reddam House Reya Govender reflected on the experience. 'The goal was to help others, but, in doing so, I learnt so much about myself – how strong I can be, how deeply I care, and how good it feels to give back.'

Sewage leaks, litter and dumping plague Vorna Valley
Vorna Valley faces a serious environmental crisis, following alarming reports from residents regarding a sewage leak and other pressing sanitation issues in the area. The residents have pinpointed a sewage spill in a bushy area near Berger Road, where wastewater is notably flowing into a nearby stream. Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe said the situation was reported to Johannesburg Water. 'The resident identified the source of the spill with visual evidence and is urging immediate investigation and action from Johannesburg Water. Additionally, there appears to be a stream where sewage is flowing, necessitating urgent examination of its origin,' said Deppe. On August 16, during an inspection of the area, the councillor observed that the community is grappling with rampant littering, including the shocking sight of disposable nappies carelessly dumped in a stormwater drain along the corner of Le Roux Avenue and Berger Road. 'The systemic disregard for public spaces has sparked deep concerns among citizens,' said Deppe. 'Moreover, it is with a heavy heart to I report the discovery of a deceased dog mere metres away from the stormwater area, which shows signs of having been discarded without any visible injuries. Search goes SONAR for missing Durban plane crash pilot
The search and recovery operation for missing pilot Andrew Blackwood-Murray, a veteran SAA and aerobatic flyer, has intensified this week as Police Search and Rescue divers, aided by advanced sonar equipment and coordinated support teams, continue their efforts along the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Blackwood-Murray, 61, from Johannesburg, remains missing following a light aircraft accident off the coast near Durban last Thursday afternoon. Authorities and volunteers are racing against time to recover key evidence and bring closure to the family. On Tuesday and Wednesday, an NSRI rescue craft, an SA Navy vessel, and Police Search and Rescue divers used advanced seabed mapping technology, specifically a NORBIT MULTI BEAM SONAR system. The equipment was provided by Johannesburg-based survey specialists SEA SHADOW, with operational assistance from Durban Marine. 'Their contribution to this search has been instrumental and is deeply appreciated,' said authorities. Adding to the efforts, local Good Samaritan Peter Jacobs from GARMIN joined the operation using a sport and recreational system aboard his private vessel, running additional grid searches to aid in sonar mapping.
