Malaysia prepares to assume UN-Habitat presidency, eyes broader urban development role
PUTRAJAYA: As Malaysia prepares to assume the presidency of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Assembly for the 2025–2029 term, the government aims to leverage this role to deepen international cooperation and promote sustainable urban planning practices both domestically and abroad.
In a statement today, the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) said the appointment is expected to create opportunities for strategic partnerships, enhance Malaysia's participation in global urban policy discussions and support more coordinated efforts to address urban challenges.
'This is the first time Malaysia will hold the presidency of the UN's highest urban development platform, marking a significant international recognition of the country's commitment to advancing the global urban development agenda,' the statement said.
KPKT added that the role aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11), which focuses on building inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities.
During this term, Malaysia will serve as president and hold a seat on the Executive Board alongside the United Arab Emirates, jointly representing the Asia-Pacific region.
Upon his return from Nairobi, Kenya, where the election was held during the recent UN-Habitat Assembly, Minister Nga Kor Ming was welcomed by ministry staff in a brief gathering to mark the milestone.
The ministry noted that this leadership role offers a platform to share Malaysia's experiences while also learning from international best practices.
Nga expressed gratitude to the ministry and its agencies for their support in strengthening Malaysia's urban development policies and initiatives on the global stage, as well as for their efforts in developing frameworks that promote livable and sustainable urban spaces.
'This is not just KPKT's success, but a victory for all Malaysians. We will shoulder this responsibility together for the future of our cities,' Nga said.

GRS intensifies preparations for 17th Sabah state polls
KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has intensified its preparations for the 17th state election (PRN17), with comprehensive training sessions for its machinery conducted across all constituencies and state assembly areas. In conjunction with the Aidiladha celebration, Hajiji expressed hope that the occasion would encourage a deeper sense of unity and sacrifice among Malaysians, especially Muslims. 'Aidiladha is not just about the ritual of animal sacrifice, it also teaches us values like cooperation, tolerance, and willingness to make sacrifices for the greater good. 'This means prioritising unity and working together for a better future for Sabah's diverse communities,' he said. Earlier in the day, Hajiji joined around 1,000 worshippers for Aidiladha prayers at Masjid Haji Noor in Kampung Serusop. He was accompanied by state Rural Development Minister Datuk Jahid Jahim, state Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau, and Pantai Dalit assemblyman Datuk Jasnih Daya. Together, they symbolically handed over sacrificial cattle to Tuaran OCPD Supt Noraidin Ag Maidin.

Myanmar junta says UN labour resolution politically motivated

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) on Thursday invoked Article 33 of its constitution which could see sanctions imposed against the military authorities which seized power in a 2021 coup. The United Nations' labour agency said countries should ensure their relations with Myanmar "in no way enable, facilitate or prolong the violations of workers' rights in respect of freedom of association and forced labour." It called on international bodies to "report any activities... directly or indirectly enabling or abetting" labour violations under Myanmar's junta government. On Saturday Myanmar's labour ministry released a statement saying the resolution had been adopted "without due partiality and fairness" and was based on "politically motivated approaches". A UN investigation into Myanmar in October 2023 urged the country's military rulers to end forced labour in the army and to halt all violence against trade unionists. It found far-reaching violations of international forced labour and freedom of association conventions in the South-East Asian nation. The resolution adopted Thursday at the ILO's 113th International Labour Conference in Geneva said Myanmar's military authorities had not indicated "any sign of meaningful acknowledgement" of the 2023 report's recommendations. Myanmar said it had been "actively implementing" the recommendations and had made "continuous progress" and accused the ILO of "turning a blind eye" to its efforts. The International Trade Union Confederation - Asia Pacific said it was the third time in the ILO's century-long history that Article 33 has been invoked. Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military ousted the democratically-elected civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a February 2021 coup. - AFP
