Aakash Chopra suggests Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should retire from ODIs instead of Tests due to fewer ODI matches. Both have impressive ODI records but may retire soon.
Amidst media reports suggesting that stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli may soon retire from ODIs, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra opined that they should have retired from the 50-over format instead of Test cricket, given the current scarcity of ODI matches.
Days after skipper Shubman Gill led India to a remarkable 2-2 draw, speculation arose that Rohit and Virat might leave ODIs too, as they are not considered for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in South Africa and Namibia scheduled for 2027, unless they play domestic 50-over cricket to demonstrate their match fitness and form. Both cricketers had announced their retirement from Test cricket ahead of India's tour to England in May.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said, 'The truth is that they have said goodbye to the wrong format. They had left T20Is after winning the T20 World Cup, but the story might have been different had they continued to play Tests and said goodbye to ODIs. India played only six ODIs in 12 months before the Champions Trophy."
'There is a possibility that you might play only six Tests in a year, but even if it is only six Tests, it's 30 days of cricket. If only six ODIs are played, it's just six days of cricket over a period of time. It will be more than 100 days from your last IPL match to the next ODI you will play. You are not playing at all. You are not practicing at all," he added.
'A three-match series gets over in seven to eight days. Then the next one would be after three months. Gaps are just incredibly huge, and you won't play first-class cricket in between. It's true that had they continued playing Test cricket and left ODIs, staying in the groove would have been a lot easier," he said.
'When you have retired from Tests, and ODI cricket is not played much, it is not going to make a lot of sense. So just two months of high-intensity IPL, where you would get to play 14 to 16 innings, and then you would play three matches after six months, and then three matches after another three months. I think it is very, very difficult," Chopra added.
What Is Kohli And Rohit's ODI Record?
Virat and Rohit are two of the finest ODI players produced by India. Virat has scored 14,181 runs in 302 matches and 290 innings at an average of 57.88, with 51 centuries and 74 fifties. His best score is 183. Rohit has amassed 11,168 runs in 272 matches and 265 innings at an average of 48.76, with 32 centuries and 59 fifties, with a best score of 264.
Both last played ODIs in the ICC Champions Trophy, which they won. Virat scored 218 runs in five matches at an average of 54.50, with a century against Pakistan and a knock of 84 against Australia in the semifinals being his top contributions. Rohit had a mixed tournament but came through with a title-sealing 76 in the final, ending with 180 runs at an average of 36.00 and a strike rate of 100.00.
The duo has maintained sensational form since 2023, the World Cup year. Virat has scored 1,710 runs in 37 matches and 34 innings at an average of 61.07, striking at above 95, with seven centuries and 10 fifties. His best score is 166*. In 38 ODIs and 37 innings, Rohit has scored 1,714 runs at an average of 48.97, with a strike rate of 117.24, with three centuries and 12 fifties, his best score being 131.
Their next ODI assignment is a three-match series against Australia starting on October 19. With three more ODIs scheduled from November to December against South Africa at home, three against New Zealand in January at home, and a summer tour to England for three ODIs in July, fans hope that Rohit and Virat will make the most of these opportunities with their consistency and reflexes to keep their chances of going to the World Cup alive.

Thiruvananthapuram likely to step in for Bengaluru at Women's World Cup
Kochi: Bengaluru's loss could now become Thiruvananthapuram's gain, with the Greenfield Stadium in Kariavattom likely to host some matches in the upcoming Women's World Cup, scheduled from Sept 30 to Nov 2. Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) president K Jayesh confirmed that discussions are ongoing with the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding this. He said ICC chairman Jay Shah asked him in Mumbai on Monday if they could take over as the host. "We assured him that Thiruvananthapuram is ready to host the Women's World Cup matches. We have the necessary infrastructure," he said. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru was awarded four matches — including the final, provided Pakistan did not qualify — when the ICC announced the official tournament itinerary. However, the plans came unstuck after the deadly stampede outside the stadium on June 4, during the Royal Challengers Bangalore's IPL victory celebrations, claimed 11 lives. In the aftermath, the Karnataka govt reportedly withdrew permission to host any match at the venue. The decision followed the findings of a govt-commissioned probe led by Justice John Michael D'Cunha, which declared the stadium "fundamentally unsafe" for large-scale events, citing design flaws, poor crowd management infrastructure, limited entry and exit points, inadequate public transport access and insufficient parking. The fallout has already affected other events. The Chinnaswamy Stadium was recently denied permission to host the KSCA Maharaja T20 Trophy, which has now been shifted to Mysuru's Srikantadatta Narasimha Raja Wadeyar ground. While an official confirmation from the ICC is still pending, the KCA remains optimistic. "It's not yet confirmed how many matches we will host. We are waiting for the ICC's nod and several logistical challenges still need to be addressed," Jayesh said. National Sports Governance Bill Clears Rajya Sabha: Here's What It Means For Athletes
News18 has learnt that the sports ministry is moving swiftly to frame rules for its implementation The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday passed the long-pending National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, despite loud protests and sloganeering from the opposition. The government, determined to push the reform through in the ongoing monsoon session, hailed it as a landmark step towards overhauling sports administration in the country. CNN-News18 has learnt that the sports ministry is moving swiftly to frame rules for its implementation. 'Eighty per cent of the work is already done, and the notification should be out in the next couple of months," a senior government source said. Once notified, the National Sports Board (NSB) will be constituted to recognise and regulate national and state-level sports federations. The bill also paves the way for a National Sports Election Panel to ensure fair, dispute-free elections across federations. This panel will be made up of members experienced in conducting federation polls, aiming to avoid legal entanglements that have plagued Indian sports bodies in the past. Athletes, especially women, will be central to decision-making, with mandatory Athletes' Committees in all federations. For the first time, a statutory minimum of four women on every Executive Committee. The bill proposes aligning Indian sports governance with the Olympic and Paralympic Charters, ensuring that the country is better positioned to host major international events, including a potential bid for the 2036 Olympics. India's sports landscape has long been plagued by controversies, from court battles over federation elections to mismanagement and a lack of athlete representation. Currently, more than 350 court cases regarding sports federations are pending, creating serious hurdles in governance and sports promotion.
