Morocco and Germany reaffirm strategic ties in first call between Bourita and new German FM
The two ministers expressed their shared determination to further strengthen ties and guide them toward a future-oriented strategic partnership. In this context, they confirmed their intention to continue the Strategic Dialogue initiated by the 2022 Joint Declaration of Rabat. The next session of this high-level dialogue will be held in Rabat.
Bourita and Wadephul also stressed the importance of deepening consultation and coordination on regional and international issues of common interest, particularly those of strategic priority to both nations.
As a reminder, in the Joint Declaration of August 25, 2022, referenced in the July 7 statement, Berlin reaffirmed its longstanding position on the Western Sahara issue. In paragraph 15, then-Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock reiterated Germany's support for the United Nations-led process aimed at reaching a «realistic, pragmatic, sustainable, and mutually acceptable political solution». Both sides affirmed the UN's exclusive role in this process and reiterated their backing for UN Security Council Resolution 2602, which emphasizes the responsibility of the parties in seeking a compromise-based resolution.
Germany also considers Morocco's 2007 autonomy plan a «serious and credible» effort and a «good basis for a solution accepted by both parties». Morocco and Germany welcomed the appointment of the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, and reiterated their active support for his efforts to move the political process forward in line with relevant Security Council resolutions. Both countries also reaffirmed their support for MINURSO.

Haitian Gang Lord Barbecue Faces US Criminal Charges
Rabat – The United States has announced criminal charges against Haiti's Jimmy Cherizier, or Barbecue, one of the most powerful gang lords in the Caribbean nation. The indictment includes numerous crimes including the fact that he has stolen money from the Haitian diaspora in the US, to pay for weapons and ammunition. Barbecue is the leader of a coalition of gangs called Via Ansanm, which controls the capital city of Port-Au-Prince in the middle of a violent gang war. The organization that he leads has been accused of hundreds of crimes including multiple murders, kidnappings, attacks on infrastructure, robbery, rape and terrorism. US officials officially designated the Viv Ansanm as a terrorist organization last year. But Barbecue has in recent months tried to gain international legitimacy and recognition, presenting his named organization as a political party. The US is currently offering $5 million for any information that can lead to his arrest, which could lead to his extradition to stand trial in America. Jeanine Pirro, the US Attorney general, stated: 'There's a good reason that there's a $5 million reward for information leading to Cherizier's arrest. He's a gang leader responsible for heinous human rights abuses, including violence against American citizens in Haiti.' Two other individuals, Bazile Richardson and Fredo the Lion, have been arrested in the US in connection with the case. They are believed to be responsible for soliciting money from Haitians living abroad to fund gang violence. Since the assassination of Juvenal Moise, the country has had a complete breakdown of law and order, and education and health services have collapsed. The country doesn't have a functioning government or police force, and its capital is one of the most dangerous places in the world. Despite a UN peacekeeping force supplied by Kenya there has been very little progress in bringing peace back to the country. Therefore, it is extremely unlikely that Barbecue will face justice for his crimes as he is heavily protected by his soldiers. There are now serious problems in Haiti beyond the gang violence around 5.7 million people, over 50% of the population, now face acute food insecurity. Barbecue is one of the world's most powerful and notorious criminals, and this case confirms the numerous human rights abuses that have been committed. Tags: Dangerous CriminalsHaiti

UN Probe Finds Evidence of Torture in Myanmar
Rabat – The UN-led Independent Mechanism for Myanmar (IMM) released a report this morning detailing systematic torture in the Southeast Asian nation. The report details systematic torture in Myanmar prisons and detention center, naming senior government figures responsible for these atrocities. It includes detailed incidents of detainees receiving beatings, electric shocks, strangulation, and finger-nail removal with pliers. The report also documented the abuse of children, who have been detained unlawfully as proxies for missing parents and family members. Nicholas Koumjian, head of the UN-led mechanism, said in a statement accompanying the organization's 16-page report: 'We have uncovered significant evidence, including eyewitness testimony, showing systematic torture in Myanmar detention facilities.' The report equally included findings covering a period over a year, using information from more than 1,300 sources, including hundreds of witness accounts, forensic analysis, photographs and documents. The IMM has also identified high-ranking commanders among the perpetrators involved in the torture and abuse which has occurred across the country. A country in unending turmoil Since the 2021 military coup against the democratic government, the country has been in turmoil and is currently going through a civil war. The UN estimates that tens of thousands of people have been affected by harsh crackdowns. Refugees, mainly from the Rohingya Muslim minority, have also been attacked in recent years, with many members of the ethnic minority having fled to countries like Bangladesh. The UN-affiliated organization has been monitoring human rights abuses dating back to 2011 in Myanmar and reflects on this period of military governance, negatively. However, budget cuts have recently placed the UN body under threat as they are struggling to find funding to continue their work. The military government in Myanmar has refused to respond to these accusations, but it is clear that this report sheds much needed human rights abuses within the country. Panama affirms Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara
A month and a half after his official visit to Rabat, Panama's Foreign Minister Javier Eduardo Martínez-Acha Vásquez has taken a firm stance by reaffirming his country's recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara. In a televised statement marking the 26th anniversary of King Mohammed VI's enthronement, the minister highlighted Panama's continued support for Morocco's autonomy plan for the Sahara provinces, calling it «the only credible, realistic, and applicable option» recognized by the international community for resolving the dispute. This reaffirmation follows his visit to Morocco on June 16, during which he had already voiced strong support for the autonomy initiative. At the time, he described Morocco's plan as «the most serious, credible, and realistic basis» for a lasting solution, even calling it a «unique foundation» for peace. His position reflects a gradual but clear shift in Panama's foreign policy over the past year regarding the Sahara issue. In January 2024, a Joint Declaration was signed during a virtual meeting between Morocco's Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and then-Panamanian Foreign Minister Janaina Tewaney Mencomo. The declaration marked a turning point in Panama's diplomatic approach. Panama Affirms Autonomy Plan as the Sole Basis for a Solution Panama had already declared its support for Morocco's Autonomy Initiative as «the sole basis for a just and lasting solution» to the regional conflict. In line with this, the Panamanian government pledged to guide its future diplomatic actions based on this position. In November 2024, Panama formally suspended its diplomatic relations with the self-proclaimed «Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic» (SADR). Following a recent videoconference with Morocco's foreign minister, Javier Eduardo Martínez-Acha Vásquez reiterated Panama's sovereign decision to cut ties with the Polisario Front. His June 16 visit to Rabat further solidified this position, culminating in the signing of a new joint declaration, in which he once again expressed his country's firm backing of Morocco's autonomy plan. Aligned with the proposal Morocco has promoted since 2007, the Panamanian foreign minister also emphasized «the urgency of reaching a definitive and viable solution to the conflict», especially in his capacity as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2025–2026. Currently, more than 70% of UN Security Council member states support Morocco's autonomy plan. Speaking from Rabat, Martínez-Acha Vásquez reminded audiences that Resolution 2756 endorses the Moroccan initiative. «I am convinced that, going forward, it will remain the only viable basis», he stated. This evolving stance signals a broader shift among Latin American nations, many of which had previously aligned with the Polisario. Last July, Ecuador made a similar move by withdrawing recognition of «SADR» and inaugurating its embassy in Morocco. On that occasion, Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld traveled to Rabat to mark the opening.
